コールド・スプリング・ハーバー〜ピアノの詩人（Cold Spring Harbor）は、Family ProductionsからFPS-2700の番号でリリースされたビリー・ジョエルのデビュー作です。レコーディングは主にロサンゼルスで行われましたが、「ホワイ・ジュディ・ホワイ」と「ユー・ルック・ソー・グッド・トゥ・ミー」の2曲はニューヨーク録音だそうです。アルバム・タイトルはビリー・ジョエルの故郷近くの街の名前で、ジャケの写真もこの街のHarbor Roadで撮影されました。
オリジナル盤は、テープの回転数が早い状態でマスタリングされるというミスが生じたため、ビリーの声がまるで別人・・・というか、ヘリウム・ガスでも吸ったかのような奇妙な声になっています（半音高いだけですが、こんなに違って聴こえるのですね）。完成されたアルバムを聴いたビリーは、レコードのターンテーブルを引き裂いて、レコードを家の前の道に投げつけたといいます。マトリクスが複数あるのに何故修正されなかったのか理解に苦しみます。もちろんアルバムは全く売れず、ビリーは1973年11月の「ピアノ・マン」でブレイクするまで2年待たねばなりませんでした。
この作品はその後1983年に再編集され、再発され、それなりのヒット作になりました。この再編集時にピッチが修正され、 "You Can Make Me Free"は半分の長さになり、"Everybody Loves You Now"と"Turn Around"でリズム・セクションが加えられ、"Tomorrow Is Today"のベース・ドラムス・オーケストラが削られました。これで、ずいぶん聴きやすくなりました。ただしこれらの再編集にビリーは関与しておらず、またオリジナル盤・再編集盤のいずれにも不満があるそうです。
この写真のコピーはラベルに「D.J.COPY」と印刷されたプロモーション盤です。ラベルは超初期の★がないデザイン。SIDE 1のマトリクスが「FRS-2700」となっているのは単純なミスでしょう。SIDE 2は事もあろうかラベルそのものがついていません。ちなみにプロモーション盤によってマトリックスが異なります（この辺については、ぼちぼち整理してupします）。
なお、このコピーには白いインナー・スリーヴが付いていました。これまで見た10枚ほどのプロモーション盤のほぼ全てのインナー・スリーヴが同様の単純な白いスリーヴでしたので、これがオリジナルでしょう。
ジャケ写真は粗い印象で、またジャケの紙の質も悪めです。マトリクスが若いもので、このように粗悪なジャケットをみかけます（逆にあとのマトリクスになるとジャケ写真が鮮明になります）。

"Cold Spring Harbor"という言葉が歌詞に出てくるのは、A面3曲目のこの曲。チョーシこいてる美人に対する辛辣な内容の歌です。でも、嫌いだったらこんなことわざわざ言わないで無視するんで、やっぱり屈折したラヴ・ソングなんでしょうね。

レコード番号は"KC 32544"で、再プレスからは"PC 32544"になります。オリジナル盤はA-1の曲名が間違って"TRAVELLIN' PRAYER" と印刷されています（ "L" が二つに増えています；ラベル、裏ジャケ、インナー・スリーヴの3か所いずれも間違っています）。
ジャケはザラザラの材質の紙で、エッジのあたりがポロポロ剥げやすく、ジャケがきれいな状態の盤は珍しいです。ちなみに再プレスからはジャケがツルツルの材質の紙に代わります。
白ラベルのプロモ盤は存在せず、この盤のように裏に"PROMOTION RECORD - NOT FOR SALE"のスタンプが押されています。タイミング・ストリップが貼付されたプロモ盤も存在します。このプロモのマトリクスは「2B/2A」ですが「2A/2A」も存在しており、おそらく「2A/2A」より若いものは存在しないと思います。
いずれにしてもプロモ盤は激レアで、見かけたら即買をお勧めします。

He also says that he did not have many new songs, hence the inclusion of two instrumentals – "The Mexican Connection" and "Root Beer Rag". The back cover features a barefooted Joel sitting in a chair looking cross; Joel himself says that he had had his wisdom teeth extracted two days prior to the shoot.The front cover is a painting of a hotel and cafe located at 651 South Centre Street in Los Angeles, California.

高校生のころ、この曲の "Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes. I'm afraid it's time for goodbye again." というフレーズが好きでした。でもいま考えてみたら "Hello, hello, hello, hello, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.... That's all there is." とか、「勧 君 金 屈 卮、満 酌 不 須 辞、花 発 多 風 雨、人 生 足 別 離」とか。古今東西を問わず、似たような言い回しばかりですね。。

歌詞カードが付属していますが、これは英語歌詞と訳のみです。曲のリストの下に恐ろしいことが書かれています。曰く「選曲及び曲順はコンサート演奏曲目曲順です。尚☆印はアンコールです。（予定）」・・・来日前にこのような日本独自の2枚組編集盤が出るというのもすごいですが「曲順」や「アンコール内容」が分かっているって、すごすぎませんか ？？ ちなみに、コンサート内容が実際にどうだったのか調べましたが、分かりませんでした。。。

起承転結のはっきりしない曲ですが、病みつきになるほど好きでした。innuendoという言葉はここで覚えました。
しかし、久しぶりに歌詞を読み返しましたが、やっぱり・さっぱりです。何について歌ってるんでしょうかね⁉

1986年9月の作品「ブリッジ」の後に行われたツアーの締めくくりに行われた1987年7－8月のロシア公演の記録です。このライヴ・アルバムの冒頭・・・政治活動をシニカルに眺める"Angry Young Man"や真摯な"Honesty"、ベトナム戦争を歌った暗い"Goodnight Saigon"と続く構成は（実際の曲順・内容を編集しているのだろうとも思いますが、それにしても）ビリー・ジョエルのベトナム戦争に対する思い、このソ連公演にかける熱意を感じさせます。
Kontsert is the second live album by Billy Joel, released in 1987. The album was recorded during the Soviet leg of Joel's 1987 The Bridge tour.
During the Cold War, rock music was not allowed in the U.S.S.R. because it was not seen as part of Soviet culture. In 1987, Mikhail Gorbachev implemented glasnost—the Soviet policy of managed openness—and the Kremlin invited Billy Joel to perform in the Soviet Union in 1986.Joel, being a history enthusiast, took advantage of this opportunity, knowing that this would impact the history of the Cold War.He was seen as a "nice, safe, first attempt at bringing in an American 'pop star.'"
