EAGLES

Hell Freezes Over"の1994年盤LP、"Long Road Out of Eden"のLPなどもプレミア価格で、今から手に入れるのなら結構な出費の覚悟が必要です。

"Eagles" is the debut studio album by the rock band the Eagles. The album was recorded at London's Olympic Studios with producer Glyn Johns and released in 1972. The album was an immediate success for the young band, reaching No. 22 on the charts and going platinum. Three singles were released from the album, each reaching the Top 40: "Take It Easy" (number 12), "Witchy Woman" (number 9), and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" (number 22). The band, starting with this album, played a major role in popularizing the country rock sound.

The album was ranked number 368 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time published in 2012.The single "Take It Easy" is part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll". This album was slated for Quadraphonic release and even given a Quadraphonic catalog number but it was never released in that format.

Eagles - Take It Easy Lyrics

Well, I'm running down the road tryin' to loosen my load
I've got seven women on my mind,
Four that wanna own me,two that wanna stone me, one says she's a friend of mine

Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
    Don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand and take it easy

Well, I'm a standing on a corner in winslow, arizona
And such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me

Come on, baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me
We may lose and we may win though
We will never be here again
So open up, I'm climbin' in, So take it easy

Well I'm running down the road trying to loosen my load,
Got a world of trouble on my mind
Lookin' for a lover who won't blow my cover, she's so hard to find

Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your ow wheels make you crazy
Come on baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me

    "Tequila Sunrise"

    It's another tequila sunrise
    Starin' slowly 'cross the sky,
    said goodbye

He was just a hired hand
Working on the dreams he planned to try
    The days go by

Every night when the sun goes down
Just another lonely boy in town
    And she's out runnin' 'round

    She wasn't just another woman
And I couldn't keep from comin' on
    It's been so long

Oh, and it's a hollow feelin'
When it comes down to dealin' friends
    It never ends

    Take another shot of courage
Wonder why the right words never come
    You just get numb

    It's another tequila sunrise,
This old world still looks the same,
    Another frame

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses
You've been out ridin' fences for so long now
    Oh, you're a hard one
I know that you've got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
    Can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet
Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones
    That you can't get

    Desperado
Oh, you ain't getting no younger
    Your pain and your hunger
    They're driving you home
    And freedom, oh, freedom
Well that's just some people talking
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
And you're losing all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes
    Away...

    Desperado
Why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you
    (Let somebody love you)
You better let somebody love you
    Before it's too late

"Desperado" is the second studio album by the American band the Eagles. It was recorded at Island Studios in London, England and released in 1973. The songs on "Desperado" are based on the themes of the Old West. The band members are featured on the album's cover dressed like an outlaw gang; "Desperado" remains the only Eagles album where the band members appear on the front cover.

Although the title track is one of the Eagles' signature songs, it was never released as a single. The song "Desperado" was ranked number 494 on Rolling Stone's 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". The album did yield two singles, though: "Tequila Sunrise" and "Outlaw Man". Those two singles reached number 64 and number 59 respectively. The album reached number 41 on the Billboard album chart and was certified gold by the RIAA on September 23, 1974, and double platinum on March 20, 2001.

"Desperado" was the last Asylum Records album to be distributed in North America by Atlantic Records (catalog no. SD 5068), prior to Asylum's mid-1973 merger with Elektra Records by Asylum's, Elektra's and Atlantic's parent company, Warner Communications.

    [Verse 1]
Seems like a dream now, it was so long ago
The moon burned so bright and the time went so slow
And I swore that I loved her and gave her a ring
The bluebird was high on the wing

    [Chorus]
    Whatever happened to Saturday night
Finding a sweetheart and holding her tight?
She said, "Tell me, oh, tell me, was I all right?"
    Whatever happened to Saturday night?

    [Verse 2]
The years brought the railroad it ran by my door
Now there's boards on the windows and dust on the floor
And she passes the time at another man's side
And I pass the time with my pride
What a tangled web we weave?
    Go around with circumstance
Someone show me how to tell
    The dancer from the dance

    [Chorus]
    Whatever happened to Saturday night
Choosing a friend and losing a fight?
She said, "Tell me, oh, tell me, are you all right?"
    Whatever happened to Saturday night?
    Whatever happened to Saturday night?

    (SIDE ONE) T1 7E 1004 A-2 CTH
(SIDE TWO) T1 7E 1004 B-2 CTH "He Who Hesitates Is Lunch"

    # Composer name Strandlund [Track A1] is misspelled "Strandlin" on the back cover.
    # 12" x 24" double-sided poster.
    # Plain black inner sleeve.

"On the Border" is the third studio album by American rock group the Eagles, released in 1974. Apart from two songs produced by Glyn Johns, it was produced by Bill Szymczyk because the group wanted a more rock‑oriented sound instead of the country-rock feel of the first two albums. It is the first Eagles album to feature guitarist Don Felder. On the Border reached number 17 on the Billboard album chart and has sold two million copies.

Three singles were released from the album: "Already Gone", "James Dean" and "Best of My Love". The singles peaked at numbers 32, 77 and 1 respectively. "Best of My Love" became the band's first of five chart toppers. The album also includes "My Man", Bernie Leadon's tribute to his deceased friend Gram Parsons. Leadon and Parsons had played together in the pioneer country rock band Flying Burrito Brothers, before Leadon joined the Eagles.

This is the first album by the Eagles to be released in Quadraphonic surround sound. It was released on Quadraphonic 8-track tape and CD-4 LP. A hidden message carved into the run out groove of some vinyl LPs reads: "He who hesitates is lunch".

Every night I'm lyin' in bed
Holdin' you close in my dreams
Thinkin' about all the things that we said
    Comin' apart at the seams
We try to talk it over
But the words come out too rough
    I know you were tryin'
To give me the best of your love
Beautiful faces and loud, empty places
Look at the way that we live
Wastin' our time on cheap talk and wine
Left us so little to give
That same old crowd was like a cold dark cloud
That we could never rise above
But here in my heart I give you the best of my love
Oh, sweet darlin', you get the best of my love
(You get the best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin', you get the best of my love
(You get the best of my love)
    I'm goin' back in time
    And it's a sweet dream
It was a quiet night and I would be all right
If I could go on sleepin'
But every mornin' I wake up and worry
    What's gonna happen today
You see it your way, and I see it mine
But we both see it slippin' away
You know we always had each other, baby
    I guess that wasn't enough
Oh, but here in my heart, I give you the best of my love
Oh, sweet darlin', you get the best of my love
    (The best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin', you get the best of my love
    (The best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin', every night and day you get the best of my love
    (The best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin', you get the best of my love
    (The best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin', you get the best of my love

(SIDE TWO) 7E-1039-B-10-RECTH 1T ---NOTHING WILL BE OK !

"One of These Nights" is the fourth studio album by the Eagles, released in 1975. The record would become the Eagles' first number one album on Billboard's album chart in July that year, and yielded three Top 10 singles, "One of These Nights", "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take It to the Limit". Its title song is the group's second number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. The album sold four million copies and was nominated for Grammy Album of the Year. A single from the album, "Lyin' Eyes", was also nominated for Record of the Year, and won the Eagles' first Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

One of These Nights is the last Eagles album to feature guitarist Bernie Leadon, who left the band after the One Of These Nights tour and was replaced by Joe Walsh. The seventh track, "Visions", is the only Eagles song on which lead guitarist Don Felder sang the lead vocals, despite his desire to write and sing more songs. The album was the band's commercial breakthrough, transforming them into international superstars. They went on a worldwide tour to promote the album.

    [Verse 1]
    One of these nights
One of these crazy old nights
We're gonna find out, pretty mama
    What turns on your lights
The full moon is calling, the fever is high
And the wicked wind whispers and moans
You got your demons and you got desires
Well, I got a few of my own

    [Chorus]
Ooh, someone to be kind to
In between the dark and the light
    Ooh, coming right behind you
Swear I'm gonna find you one of these nights

    [Verse 2]
    One of these dreams
One of these lost and lonely dreams, now
    We're gonna find one
    Oh, one that really screams
I've been searching for the daughter of the devil himself
I've been searching for an angel in white
I've been waiting for a woman who's a little of both
And I can feel her but she's nowhere in sight

    [Chorus]
    Ooh, loneliness will blind you
In between the wrong and the right (oh, oh, oh)
    Ooh, coming right behind you
Swear I'm gonna find you one of these nights

    [Outro]
    One of these nights
In between the dark and the light
    Coming right behind you
    Swear I'm gonna find you
Get you baby one of these nights
    One of these nights
    Hoo, hoo hoo
    Hoo, hoo hoo
    One of these nights
    I, I can feel it
    I can feel it
    One of these nights
    Coming right behind you
Swear I'm gonna find you now
    One of these nights
    Baby, so don't, don't
    I'm all alone
    One of these nights
One of these crazy, crazy, crazy nights
    One of these nights
    Swear I'm gonna find you
    Coming right behind you
    One of these nights
    Hoo, hoo hoohoohoo
    One of these nights
    All I wanna say, ahhh
    One of these nights

DON'T WORRY - NOTHING WILL BE OK !" 。。

    【Wikipedia

    [Verse 1]
City girls just seem to find out early
How to open doors with just a smile
    A rich old man
And she won't have to worry
She'll dress up all in lace and go in style
Late at night a big old house gets lonely
I guess every form of refuge has its price
And it breaks her heart to think her love is
Only given to a man with hands as cold as ice
So she tells him she must go out for the evening
To comfort an old friend who's feeling down
But he knows where she's going as she's leaving
She is headed for the cheating side of town

    [Chorus]
You can't hide your lying eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lying eyes

    [Verse 2]
On the other side of town a boy is waiting
With fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal
She drives on through the night anticipating
Because he makes her feel the way she used to feel
    She rushes to his arms
    They fall together
She whispers that it's only for awhile
She swears that soon she'll be coming back forever
She pulls away and leaves him with a smile

    [Chorus]
You can't hide your lying eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lying eyes

    [Verse 3]
She gets up and pours herself a strong one
And stares out at the stars up in the sky
Another night, it's gonna be a long one
She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry
She wonders how it ever got this crazy
She thinks about a boy she knew in school
Did she get tired or did she just get lazy?
She's so far gone she feels just like a fool
My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things
You set it up so well, so carefully
Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things
You're still the same old girl you used to be

    [Chorus]
You can't hide your lying eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lying eyes
There ain't no way to hide your lying eyes
Honey, you can't hide your lying eyes

    On a dark desert highway
    Cool wind in my hair
    Warm smell of colitas
    Rising up through the air
    Up ahead in the distance
    I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
    I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

    "Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
    Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (Any time of year)
    You can find it here"

    Her mind is Tiffany-twisted
    She got the Mercedes Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
    She calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
    Sweet summer sweat
    Some dance to remember
    Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
    "Please bring me my wine"
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969"
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
    Just to hear them say

    "Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
    Such a lovely face
They living it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
    Bring your alibis"

    Mirrors on the ceiling
    The pink champagne on ice
And she said: "We are all just prisoners here
    Of our own device"
    And in the master's chambers
    They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
    Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
    "Relax," said the night man
    "We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
    But you can never leave!"

"Hotel California" is the fifth studio album by American rock band the Eagles. The album was recorded by Bill Szymczyk at the Criteria and Record Plant studios between March and October 1976, and then released on Asylum in December. It was their first album with guitarist Joe Walsh, who had replaced founding member Bernie Leadon, and is the last album to feature bassist Randy Meisner. The front cover is a photograph of the Beverly Hills Hotel by David Alexander.

"Hotel California" topped the US Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart. At the 20th Grammy Awards, the Eagles won a Grammy Award for "Hotel California", which won Record of the Year, and for "New Kid in Town". The album was nominated for Album of the Year but lost to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. Three singles were released from the album, with two topping the Billboard Hot 100: "New Kid in Town" and "Hotel California", whilst "Life in the Fast Lane" reached No. 11.

A 40th anniversary special edition of Hotel California was released in November 2017. Hotel California is one of the best-selling albums of all time. It has been certified 26× Platinum in the US, and has sold over 32 million copies sold worldwide, making it the band's best-selling album after Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975). It has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2003 and 2012, it was ranked number 37 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

    Theme

The first song written for the album was "Hotel California", which became the theme for the album. Henley said of the themes of the songs in the album:

They're the same themes that run through all of our work: loss of innocence, the cost of naiveté, the perils of fame, of excess; exploration of the dark underbelly of the American dream, idealism realized and idealism thwarted, illusion versus reality, the difficulties of balancing loving relationships and work, trying to square the conflicting relationship between business and art; the corruption in politics, the fading away of the Sixties dream of "peace, love and understanding."

On the title "Hotel California", Henley said that "the word, "California," carries with it all kinds of connotations, powerful imagery, mystique, etc., that fires the imaginations of people in all corners of the globe. There's a built-in mythology that comes with that word, an American cultural mythology that has been created by both the film and the music industry." In an interview with the Dutch magazine ZigZag shortly before the album's release, Don Henley said:

This is a concept album, there's no way to hide it, but it's not set in the old West, the cowboy thing, you know. It's more urban this time (…) It's our bicentennial year, you know, the country is 200 years old, so we figured since we are the Eagles and the Eagle is our national symbol, that we were obliged to make some kind of a little bicentennial statement using California as a microcosm of the whole United States, or the whole world, if you will, and to try to wake people up and say 'We've been okay so far, for 200 years, but we're gonna have to change if we're gonna continue to be around.'"

    [Verse 1]
    He was a hard-headed man
He was brutally handsome, and she was terminally pretty
She held him up, and he held her for ransom in the heart
    Of the cold, cold city
He had a nasty reputation as a cruel dude
They said he was ruthless, they said he was crude
They had one thing in common, they were good in bed
She'd say, "Faster, faster. The lights are turnin' red."

    [Chorus 1]
Life in the fast lane, Surely makes you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, Huh
Are you with me so far?

    [Verse 2]
Eager for action and hot for the game
The coming attraction, the drop of a name
They knew all the right people, they took all the right pills
They threw outrageous parties, they paid heavenly bills
There were lines on the mirror, lines on her face
She pretended not to notice, she was caught up in the race
Out every evening, until it was light
He was too tired to make it, she was too tired to fight about it

    [Chorus 2]
Life in the fast lane, Surely makes you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, Huh
Life in the fast lane, Everything all the time
Life in the fast lane, Huh

    [Verse 3]
Blowin' and burnin', blinded by thirst
They didn't see the stop sign, took a turn for the worst
She said, "Listen, baby, you can hear the engine ring."
"We've been up and down this highway, haven't seen a goddamn thing."
He said, "Call the doctor. I think I'm gonna crash."
"The doctor says he's comin', but you gotta pay in cash."
They went rushin' down that freeway, messed around and got lost
They didn't care, they were just dyin' to get off

    [Chorus 2]
And it was life in the fast lane, Surely makes you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, Huh
Life in the fast lane, Everything all the time
Life in the fast lane, Huh

    [Outro]
    Life in the fast lane
    Life in the fast lane

    Eagles / Hotel California (US, Asylum Records, 7E-1084) <December 8, 1976>
(SIDE ONE) 7E 1084 A RE SP 1-2 "IS IT SIX O'CLOCK YET?"
    (SIDE TWO) 7E 1084 B-1 SP 1-1 "V.O.L. IS FIVE PIECE LIVE"

    Composition

Bernie Leadon, who was the principal country influence in the band, left the band after the release of the previous album One of These Nights. For Hotel California, the band made a conscious decision to move away from country rock, and wrote some songs that are more rock & roll, such as "Victim of Love" and "Life in the Fast Lane". Leadon was replaced by Joe Walsh who provided the opening guitar riff of "Life in the Fast Lane" that was then developed into the song. The title for "Life in the Fast Lane" was inspired by a conversation between Frey and his drug dealer during a high speed car ride.

The melody of the title track, "Hotel California", was written by Don Felder. Don Henley wrote most of the lyrics, with contributions from Glenn Frey. Henley noted that hotel had become a "literal and symbolic focal point of their lives at that time", and it became the theme of the song. Frey wanted the song to be "more cinematic", and to write it "just like it was a movie". Henley sought inspiration for the lyrics by driving out into the desert, as well as from films and theatre. Parts of the lyrics of "Hotel California" as well as the song "Wasted Time" were based on Henley's break up with his then girlfriend Loree Rodkin.

Frey, in the "Hotel California" episode of In the Studio with Redbeard, spoke about the writing of "The Last Resort". Frey said: "It was the first time that Don took it upon himself to write an epic story and we were already starting to worry about the environment… we're constantly screwing up paradise and that was the point of the song and that at some point there is going to be no more new frontiers. I mean we're putting junk, er, garbage into space now."

    Recording

The album was recorded between March and October 1976 at Criteria Studios, Miami, FL and Record Plant Studios, Los Angeles, CA, and produced by Bill Szymczyk. Although the band favored Los Angeles, the producer Szymczyk wanted to record in Miami as he had developed a fear of living on a fault line in Los Angeles after experiencing an earthquake, and a compromise was then struck to split the recording at both places. While the band were recording the album, Black Sabbath were recording Technical Ecstasy in an adjacent studio at Criteria Studios in Miami. The band was forced to stop recording on numerous occasions because Black Sabbath were too loud and the sound was coming through the wall. The last track of the album, "The Last Resort" had to be re-recorded a number of times due to noise from the next studio.

For the title track "Hotel California", after the arrangement and instrumentation had been refined, several takes were recorded. The best parts were then spliced together, in all 33 edits on the two‑inch master, to create the final version. In contrast, "Victim of Love" was recorded in a live session in studio apart from the lead vocal and the harmony on the choruses which were added later. Don Felder initially sang the lead vocals in the many early takes for the song, but the band felt that his efforts were not up to the required standard, and Henley then took over as the lead.

According to Henley in a 1982 interview, the Eagles "probably peaked on Hotel California." Henley said: "After that, we started growing apart as collaborators and as friends."

    [Verse]
    Well baby, there you stand
With your little head, down in your hand
Oh, my God, you can't believe
    It's happening again
Your baby's gone and you're all alone
And it looks like the end

And you're back out on the street
    And you're trying to remember
How do you start it over?
You don't know if you can
You don't care much for a stranger's touch
But you can't hold your man

You never thought you'd be alone
    This far down the line
And I know what's been on your mind
You're afraid it's all been wasted time

The autumn leaves have got you thinking
About the first time that you fell
You didn't love the boy too much, no, no
You just loved the boy too well, farewell
So you live from day to day, and you dream
    About tomorrow, oh

And the hours go by like minutes
And the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something
    To make them go away
And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind from wondering what
I left behind and from worrying about this wasted time

Ooh, another love has come and gone
Ooh, and the years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me
Before you went out on your own
    "Sometimes to keep it together
You got to leave it alone"

So you can get on with your search, baby
And I can get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find
That it wasn't really wasted time

    [Verse 1]
There's talk on the street; it sounds so familiar
    Great expectations, everybody's watching you
People you meet, they all seem to know you
Even your old friends treat you like you're something new

    [Chorus]
    Johnny-come-lately
    The new kid in town
    Everybody loves you
    So don't let them down

    [Verse 2]
You look in her eyes; the music begins to play
Hopeless romantics, here we go again
But after a while, you're lookin' the other way
It's those restless hearts that never mend

    [Chorus]
    Johnny-come-lately
    The new kid in town
    Will she still love you
    When you're not around?

    [Bridge]
There's so many things you should have told her
But night after night, you're willing to hold her
Just hold her, tears on your shoulder

    [Verse 3]
There's talk on the street, it's there to remind you
Doesn't really matter which side you're on
You're walking away and they're talking behind you
They will never forget you 'til somebody new comes along

    [Chorus]
    Where you've been lately?
There's a new kid in town
    Everybody loves him, don't they?
He's holding her, and you're still around

    [Outro]
    Oh, my, my
There's a new kid in town
Just another new kid in town
(Ooh, hoo) Everybody's talking 'bout the
(Ooh, hoo) New kid in town
(Ooh, hoo) Everybody's walking like the
(Ooh, hoo) New kid in town
There's a new kid in town
I don't want to hear it
There's a new kid in town
I don't want to hear it, ah ooh
There's a new kid in town
There's a new kid in town
There's a new kid in town
    Everybody's talking
There's a new kid in town
    People started walking
There's a new kid in town
There's a new kid in town
There's a new kid in town
There's a new kid in town

    "I Can't Tell You Why"

Look at us baby, up all night
    Tearing our love apart
Aren't we the same two people
Who lived through years in the dark?

Every time I try to walk away
Something makes me turn around and stay
And I can't tell you why

    When we get crazy
    It just ain't right
(try to keep your head, little girl)
    Girl, I get lonely, too
    You don't have to worry
    Just hold on tight
(don't get caught in your little world)
    'Cause I love you

Nothing's wrong as far as I can see
We make it harder than it has to be
And I can't tell you why
No, baby, I can't tell you why
    I can't tell you why

Every time I try to walk away
Something makes me turn around and stay
And I can't tell you why

No, no, baby, I can't tell you why
    I can't tell you why
I can't tell you why, no

    "The Long Run"

I used to hurry a lot, I used to worry a lot
I used to stay out till the break of day
    Oh, that didn't get it
It was high time I quit it
I just couldn't carry on that way

Oh, I did some damage, I know it's true
Didn't know I was so lonely, till I found you
    You can go the distance
We'll find out in the long run
    (In the long run)
    We can handle some resistance
If our love is a strong one (is a strong one)

    People talkin' about us
They got nothin' else to do
When it all comes down we will
    Still come through
    In the long run
Ooh, I want to tell you, it's a long run

You know I don't understand why you don't
    Treat yourself better
Do the crazy things that you do

'Cause all the debutantes in Houston, baby
Couldn't hold a candle to you

Did you do it for love?
Did you do it for money?
Did you do it for spite?
Did you think you had to, honey?

    【Wiki

    この作品は、ビル・シムジクがプロデュースを引き続き担当、ベーシストとして加入したティモシー・B・シュミットがイーグルスのアルバムに初参加、「言いだせなくて」はシュミットの作品である。アルバム全体の雰囲気は、かつてイーグルスの爽快さは影を潜め、重苦しさが漂うものとなった。曲作りにおいても、アルバム全10曲のうち4曲がバンド外の人間との共作である。このアルバムからは「ハートエイク・トゥナイト」「ロング・ラン」「言い出せなくて」がシングルカットされてヒットを記録する。

    アルバムのラストを飾るのは「サッド・カフェ」という曲で、これは1977年に亡くなったバンドのマネージャーである、ジョン・バーリックに捧げられている。しかし、曲全体を覆うたそがれた雰囲気とその歌詞から、グループ活動にピリオドを打つというニュアンスも感じられた。

    ビルボード・チャートでも1位に輝いたほか、日本のオリコンチャートでも週間1位を獲得。本作はイーグルス唯一のオリコンチャート1位獲得作品である。

    このアルバムをリリース後バンドは再びワールド・ツアーを敢行しこのライブの模様を収めた『イーグルス・ライヴ』が1980年に発表された。79年には再来日も果たしている。バンドは1982年に解散し、このアルバムがバンドとしての最後のスタジオアルバムとなった。

    {Intro}

    [Verse 1]
    Somebody's gonna hurt someone
    Before the night is through
    Somebody's gonna come undone
    There's nothin' we can do
    Everybody wants to touch somebody
    If it takes all night
Everybody wants to take a little chance
    Make it come out right

    [Chorus]
There's gonna be a heartache tonight
    A heartache tonight, I know
There's gonna be a heartache tonight
    A heartache tonight, I know
    Lord, I know

    [Verse 2]
Some people like to stay out late
Some folks can't hold out that long
But nobody wants to go home now
    There's too much goin' on
This night is gonna last forever
Last all, last all summer long
Some time before the sun comes up
The radio is gonna play that song

    [Chorus]
There's gonna be a heartache tonight
    A heartache tonight, I know
There's gonna be a heartache tonight
    A heartache tonight, I know
    Lord, I know

There's gonna be a heartache tonight
    The moon's shinin' bright
So turn out the light and we'll get it right
There's gonna be a heartache tonight
    A heartache tonight, I know
    Heartache, baby

    {Instrumental Bridge}

    [Verse 1]
    Somebody's gonna hurt someone (somebody)
    Before the night is through
    Somebody's gonna come undone
    There's nothin' we can do
(Everybody) Everybody wants to touch somebody
    If it takes all night
Everybody wants to take a little chance
To make it come out right

    [Chorus]
There's gonna be a heartache tonight
    A heartache tonight, I know
There's gonna be a heartache tonight
    A heartache tonight, I know
    Let's go

    We can beat around the bushes;
We can get down to the bone
We can leave it in the parkin' lot
But either way, there's gonna be a
Heartache tonight, a heartache tonight, I know (Lord, I know)
    There'll be a heartache tonight
    A heartache tonight, I know
    Woohoo!!!

    {Outro}

(SIDE TWO) "FROM THE POLACK WHO SAILED NORTH" 5E 508 B 3SP B-14395

    Background
The album was originally intended to be a double album. The band could not come up with enough songs and the idea was therefore scrapped. The recording was protracted; they started recording in 1977, and the album took 18 months to record in five different studios, with the album finally released in September 1979. According to Don Henley, the band members were "completely burned out" and "physically, emotionally, spiritually and creatively exhausted" from a long tour when they started recording the album, and they had few songs. However, they managed to put together ten songs for the album, with contribution from their friends J.D. Souther and Bob Seger who co-wrote with Frey and Henley on "Heartache Tonight". (Souther also got songwriting credit on "Teenage Jail" and "The Sad Cafe".)

According to Henley, the title track was in part a response to press articles that said they were "passé" as disco was then dominant and punk emerging, which inspired lines such as "Who is gonna make it/ We'll find out in the long run". He said that the inspiration for the lyrics was also "irony", as they wrote about longevity and posterity while the group "was breaking apart, imploding under the pressure of trying to deliver a worthy follow-up to Hotel California".

Randy Meisner decided to leave the Eagles after an argument in Knoxville, Tennessee during the Hotel California Tour in June 1977. He was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit, who brought an unfinished song to the band, "I Can't Tell You Why". Schmit wrote the song based loosely on his own experiences; both Henley and Frey liked the song and they completed the song together. Joe Walsh also contributed a song on the record – "In the City", which was first recorded by Walsh for the movie soundtrack for The Warriors.Don Felder wrote the tune for "The Disco Strangler" using a four-on-the-floor disco beat as the basis for the composition. Henley wrote the lyrics. Henley intended the song to be an antidote to disco as both he and the rest of the band disliked disco, which was the most popular musical genre at the time. The song "The Sad Cafe" was inspired by the Troubadour nightclub in Hollywood where the Eagles once played, and also by Dan Tana's restaurant that they frequented, while "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" was written as an homage to Sixties "frat rock" such as the song "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians.

The album was produced by Bill Szymczyk, although the Eagles were listed as co-producers.

    [Verse 1]
Out in the shiny night, the rain was softly falling
Tracks that ran down the boulevard had all been washed away
Out of the silver light, the past came softly calling
And I remember the times we spent inside the Sad Café

Oh, it seemed like a holy place, protected by amazing grace
And we would sing right out loud, the things we could not say
We thought we could change this world with words like "love" and "freedom"
We were part of the lonely crowd inside the Sad Café

    [Chorus]
    Oh, expecting to fly
We would meet on that beautiful shore in the sweet by and by

    [Verse 2]
Some of their dreams came true, some just passed away
And some of them stayed behind, inside the Sad Café

    {Acoustic Solo}

    [Bridge]
The clouds rolled in and hid that shore
Now that Glory Train, it don't stop here no more
Now I look at the years gone by and wonder at the powers that be
I don't know why fortune smiles on some and let's the rest go free

    [Verse 3]
Maybe the time has drawn the faces I recall
But things in this life change very slowly if they ever change at all
No use in asking why, it just turned out that way
So meet me at midnight baby inside the Sad Café
Why don't you meet me at midnight, baby, inside the Sad Café

    {Saxophone Solo}

All alone at the end of the of the evening
And the bright lights have faded to blue
I was thinking 'bout a woman who might have loved me
    And I never knew

You know I've always been a dreamer
    (Spent my life running 'round)
And it's so hard to change
    (Can't seem to settle down)
But the dreams I've seen lately
Keep on turning out and burning out
    And turning out the same

So put me on a highway
    And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time

You can spend all your time making money
You can spend all your love making time
If it all fell to pieces tomorrow
    Would you still be mine?

And when you're looking for your freedom
    (Nobody seems to care)
And you can't find the door
    (Can't find it anywhere)
When there's nothing to believe in
Still you're coming back, you're running back
    You're coming back for more

So put me on a highway
    And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time

    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit one more time
    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
Come on and take it to the limit one more time
    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
You gotta take it to the limit one more time
    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit one more time
    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
Come on and take it to the limit one more time

On my word, what does it mean?
Is it love or is it me
That made you change so suddenly
From lookin' out to feelin' free

As I lay here on my bed
Wonderin' what it was I said
That made you think I'd lost my head
When I knew I lost my heart instead

So won't you please read my signs?
    (Be a gypsy)
Tell me what I hope to find
    (Deep within me)
Because you can't find my mind
    (Please be with me)

Of all the better things I've heard
Lovin' you has made the words
And all the rest seem so absurd
'Cause in the end it all comes out, I'm sure

So won't you please read my signs?
    (Be a gypsy)
Tell me what I hope to find
    (Deep within me)
