70年代後半～80年代に数多く生まれた「ベトナム帰還兵をテーマにした、アメリカを告発する作品」のひとつです。日本人としては腑に落ちない理解困難な表現も多いのですが、それでも皮肉や婉曲表現であることは理解できます。それが、母国語として接しているはずのアメリカ人が「愛国歌」と受け取ってしまったというのが、本当に不思議。まあ、それだけシンプルで力があるサビだったと言うことなんでしょうが。

レーガンが「アメリカ生まれを誇る歌」「古き良きアメリカを体現する若者」として言及し、スプリングスティーンは保守派に祭り上げられかけました。その後、スプリングスティーンは作品意図に言及したり、直接的な政治的発言をせざるを得なくなりました。確かジャケ写真についても「オシッコかけてる」と言ったような記憶が・・・・（ガセかな）。近年は反発を食らいながらも積極的にオバマ大統領を支援したことでも知られますね。まあ、歌を聴いていると、当然そういうスタンスだろうなと思いますが。
