あまたのミュージシャンにカヴァーされ R&B ～ soulファンならずとも知るであろう有名曲 "Sunny" ・・・・あまりにカヴァーが多く、オリジナルが誰か知らないまま聴いていました。

1963年11月28日、ジョン・F・ケネディ大統領暗殺の翌日、兄Haroldがナッシュビルのナイトクラブでナイフの喧嘩で殺された。ヘブは憔悴し、作曲に慰めを求めた。こうして生まれたのが『Sunny』である。と言われるが、本人によると、その時はジェラルド・ウィルソンのアルバム『You Better Believe It!』に癒されたとのことである。

この曲が最初に収録されたのは1965年収録、1966年リリースの弘田三枝子のアルバム『ニューヨークのミコ』で、ビリー・テイラー・トリオが伴奏のしっとりとしたバラード調のアレンジであった。

その後、本人の"Sunny"はニューヨークで録音され1966年にシングル発売、R&Bで三位、ポップで2位、イギリスで12位。1966年にビートルズとツアーした時には"Sunny"はビートルズのシングルよりも売れていた。BMIは"Sunny"を「世紀の100曲」の25位とした。1976年、ディスコ・バージョンの『Sunny '76』を発表、R&Bで94位。
