Every Picture Tells a Story, released May 1971, is the third album by Rod Stewart. It incorporates hard rock, folk, and blues styles. It went to number one on both the UK and US charts and finished third in the Jazz & Pop critics' poll for best album of 1971. It has been an enduring critical success, including a number 172 ranking on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

のっけから言い訳みたいですが、ロッド・スチュワートの声とか音楽は大好きです。1984年ごろからロッドを聴き続けています。ただ、最初に抱いた「このひとバカっぽいなー」・・・という印象が未だ払拭できません。というか、僕の中では揺るぎない事実のようになってしまっています。

僕は「バカ」に対して偏狭な考えは持っていません。ぼくの尊敬する植木等師匠も ♪ 自慢じゃないが俺もバカ、遠慮するなよ君もバカ ♪ と歌っていらっしゃる。彼が「バカ」であってもそれは彼の単なる事実・属性の一つでしかないし、そもそも人間というのは「知能が低いバカ」「知能が正常なバカ」「知能が高いバカ」に分類されるとされています（大昔に読んだ呉智英の本の受け売り）。ただ、どう言い繕っても、僕の中で「ロッド・スチュワートはバカ」というのは「2001年宇宙の旅」に出てきた屹立するモノリスのように厳然とした事実です。

ですので、ロッド・スチュワートがこんな風に「生まれ育った街に対するノスタルジー」をテーマにした曲を書いているのには驚きました。

おお、おバカなロッドもノスタルジーという感覚を持ち合わせているのだ！　と。

語彙力のなさ、深みのない表現。。。

閑話休題。いまふと「ふるさと」「ノスタルジー」をテーマにした曲を思い出してみました。

まず"Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane" 。これはふるさとの歌としては定番でしょうけど「ノスタルジー」かと言われると、ちょっと違う気がしますね。

「フリーホイーリン」のB面2曲目の"Bob Dylan's Dream"は、「ノスタルジー」だけど、ちょっと「ふるさと」ではないですかね（https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAgWklREPWI）。

照れ隠しなのか芝居がかった感じのTom Waitsの"Train Song"は素晴らしいと思います（https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFuub_WoCXY）。でも「ふるさと」からも「ノスタルジー」からも、少しズレていますね。

Ron Sexsmithが飾らず淡々と歌い上げる"Galbraith Street"は「二度と戻れない」感じが半端ないです（https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8MY4Rmfmcg）。これが「ふるさと・ノスタルジー」曲のグランプリかも。

ちなみに日本語だとRCサクセションの「去年の今頃」と中島みゆきの「異国」を思い出しましたが、あ、仕事の時間だ・・・。
