『渚にて』の邦題で発表された1974年の作品で、大傑作 "Harvest"（February 1, 1972）に続くスタジオ録音作品という事になります。
ただ実際の流れは複雑です。ニール・ヤングは "Harvest"のあと映画の2枚組サントラ"Journey Through The Past"（November 7, 1972）と1973年2-4月に録音したライヴ盤"Time Fades Away"（October 15, 1973）をリリースしました。1973年8-9月には"Tonight's the Night"を録音しましたが会社から発表を拒否され、 "Harvest"の2年半後にようやく本作品の発表に至っています。
ビートルズやビーチ・ボーイズのように「1年に2枚」という時代はすでに終わっていましたが、それでも1年に1枚のアルバムを発表するのが常識でしたから、かなりの異常事態だったと思います。
"Harvest"によりビッグ・スターとなったものの、妻スーザンと破局、更にドラッグに逃避したもののドラッグにより友人ブルース・ペリーとダニー・ウィットンが亡くなるなど、当時のニール・ヤングの私生活には続いて大きな問題が起こっています。1975年にようやく発表された"Tonight's the Night"からは、ニールの不安定さが明らかです。
"Tonight's the Night"～"On The Beach"を時系列で聴くと、この作品がニール・ヤングにとっての「リハビリ」的な意味合いがあること、また音楽の世界で生きていくという決意表明であることが、容易に読み取れます。怒り、自虐、繊細さ、・・・・そういったニール・ヤングのキーワードとも言えるものが、この"Harvest"以降の1-2年で確立されたといって良さそうです。
