切手の記載とカタログの英語名から、人物は判明。

この記事には肖像の原画もあり、推定アーティストはフランシスコ・デ・スルバラン。きっとドラゴンのことが出てくる、と期待し読み続け、ルイスさんの出生やカトリックの布教士として南米に行ったこと、彼にはひとかけらのユーモアもなかった！などを知ったけれど、ペットについての説明はなく。
名前と dragon でさらにサーチすると、米国ケンタッキー州の Louisville に彼を聖人とする教会があって、HPに由来が出てきました。南米での布教時、彼は辣腕で多くの原住民族をキリスト教に入信させた。その実績を妬んだある僧が毒入りのワインで彼を殺そうとした（なんて親切な宗教者！）とき、「serpent」がワインからぬっと出てきて「毒入りだよー」と告げたので助かった、という逸話です。
serpent は蛇ですが、水から現れる幻想の生き物の総称でもあるようです。切手の小さい幻獣は、どう見てもヘビよりはドラゴンですよね。
生き延びたルイスさんはカリブ海諸島や西アフリカで布教を続けながらスペインに戻り（16世紀の後半）、本国の人たちに、アメリカ大陸での原住民の虐待をやめるよう訴えた、特筆すべき人道家になったそうです。

本当にその通りで、最初は幻獣をペットにして人を惑わす妖術使いかな？と思いました、、。ヒゲの雰囲気とかも、ちょっと役者っぽいですよね？？

2024/04/04 - 編集済みSerpent, in English, can sometimes refer to other types of reptiles that hiss and crawl especially archaic usages of the word. Also, mythological creatures such as dragons are sometimes referred to as serpents. There is a lot biblical meaning here too, especially referencing the serpent in the Garden of Eden.

Ah, of course the biblical meaning which I should have thought the first. And it is interesting between dragon and serpent dual usage on similar creatures.
I am curious about St. Louis's facial expression - vague smile or hidden love (well, of course as the serpent saved his life).. If that is related to the serpent in the Garden of Eden, then meaning of this picture is deeper..?

2024/04/05I don't think the snake/serpent depicted in this painting is saving his life. Rather, it is a representation of the evil poison that is in the cup of wine. The story is that a native priest attempted to poison him with this wine and his attitude is one of blessing the wine in order to bring divine intervention and nullify the poison/serpent. Generally, serpents in biblical tradition are meant to represent evil or satan.

For me, his facial expression was the trigger to search about him and his story.
"I like this creature"
or maybe
"I am glad I can see this creature."
Anyway, nice artistic and philatelic entrance to a piece of history.
