The 1st Issue 1 Sen revenues are amongst the most commonly seen classic Japanese revenues and could be found in various shades, ranging from very pale gray to dark black depending on the period of issuance.

The earliest printing (figure 1), prepared in Meiji 5 (1873) and/or early Meiji 6 (1874) are of light gray to gray-black, often having an extremely pale shade.

The later printing (figure 2), on the contrary, is of dark black. Intermediate shades also exist and are considered to reflect the printing periods.

The exact number of the plates is unknown - Furuya (2011) has listed over 40 different plates, whereas Hasegawa (2016) mentioned that the plating by Furuya has to be reset for further investigation.

Various engraving varieties (error, plate flaws) are recorded, which adds extra interest to this revenue stamp.
