Roby Duke / Down To Business

In 1989, 3 years after his third solo album “Blue Eyed Soul” release, Roby Duke, one of the best CCM singers in 1980's, released “Down To Business". Comparing with the third album, Roby sings naturally.
This album is undoubtedly a well produced and at time's even attention grabbing set of pop funk gospel tunes. But after a while you begin to wonder what happened to those classic hooks one expects from an album whose players read like a Who's Who of the LA session scene. As gospel music often goes, this isn't a bad album. Roby Duke has a nice smokey edge to his voice and the higher than high playing and competent lyrics lock together well enough. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if Christian music is to appeal to a wider audience than its current one more thought must go into discovery of those hooks which actually make, popular music popular.
The day after Christmas, 2007 Roby Duke suffered a heart attack and went home to be with the Lord. He was 51 years old.
