Kelly Willard / Willing Heart
It was sixteen years old when Florida native Kelly Willard moved to Nashville. She came across Harlan Rogers who encouraged her and taught her, actually having to talk he into singing solos and then joined Harlan Rogers & Friends, and toured until 1977, when she moved to Southern California. There, Willard played keyboards and sung background vocals on projects for such artists including Tommy Coomes and Roby Duke before Maranatha! Music approached her to record her own solo project. In 1979, Willard released her first solo album “Blame It On The One I Love”. Her second solo album “Willing Heart” followed in 1981. Willard sang all the tunes with her beautiful female voice. She wrote all songs by herself except "Comfortable With You", " Faithful Love" and "Hold On" with Hadley Hockensmith, "A Million Ways" with Pita Delamater and "Only You" with Bruce Hibbard. Kenny Marks was one of the 1980’s mainstay artists in CCM since his 1982 debut album “Follow Him” release. In 1984, his second effort was completed as the album “Right Where You Are”, that was regularly in circulation on Christian radio and are still considered by many today to be CCM classics. Marks continued to release albums up 'til 1995, exploring a more melodic ballad driven sound; “Attitude” (1985), “Make It Right” (1987), “Another Friday Night” (1989), “Fire Of Forgiveness” (1992), “Absolutely Positively” (1994 best album featuring three then-new songs) and “World Gone Mad” (1995). Kenny Marks /Follow Him
Detroit native Kenneth Michael Marks, aka Kenny Marks, moved to Nashville around 1978 with his demos when he was 28 years old or so. Almost a year later, Marks knocked the door of Word, the leading CCM label and succeeded to get a deal with Word/Myrth. However it took almost three years before releasing his first album "Follow Him" produced by Keith Thomas. Since then, Kenny Marks was one of the mainstay artists in CCM. His music had Bryan Adams vibe, personally his voice reminds me of Tommy Funderburk's mid 1980's works, i.e. "Front" and "What If". Someone said that his pop tune had same atmosphere as Nielsen-Pearson's one. Release: 1982 Label: Myrrh, USA (MSB-6714) First Reissued CD Release: 10 March, 2001 (Cool Sound, Inc. Bryan Duncan / Joyride
Bryan Duncan consistently released stellar solo projects since he stopped his Sweet Comfort Band. I would admit that "Mercy" (1992), "Slow Revival" (1994) and "Blue Skies" (1996) are one of the best CCM albums I ever listened to. However, I have to confess that I was so disappointed with his 1998 album "The Last Time I Was Here" because Bryan seemed to make his music style into wrong direction. I did not understand why he did so. I was very glad that Bryan Duncan returned to his rich R&B roots. His 2001 album "Joyride" is the true blue-eyed soul music from start to finish. Bryan covers Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed", which is the best cover version of the tune I ever listened to. Release: 6 March, 2001 Label: Diadem Music. USA (83061 0656 2) Tracks: 1. Pete Carlson / Child Of The Heavenly
In 1982, Word Records released Pete Carlson’s fourth album “ Dreamer's Dream” up with an up-and-coming producer/writer, Keith Thomas. Their co-writing and collaborative creative effort was successful in the CCM marketplace. Thus, another album produced by Thomas followed in 1984, that was titled “Child of the Heavenly”. Pete’s last album project was Living in the Name of Love, produced by Mark Baldwin, a much-heralded Nashville session guitarist, and producer. Mark and Pete co-wrote the majority of songs on the album. Carlson’s vocal on this album would have been well polished, hence I prefer this fifth album than Dreamer's Dream" personally. Carlson released one more album "Living In The Names Of Love" in 1988 produced by Mark Baldwin, a much-heralded Nashville session guitarist, and producer. Mark and Pete co-wrote the majority of songs on the album. Since then, Carlson continued to be involved with songwriting and represents other writers, and provides licensing services and music supervision for various artists through Carlson Music Management, Inc. since 2005. Pete Carlson / Dreamer's Dream
It was 1974 that Pete Carlson's first effort "Jesus, Your Name" was released under a semiprivate label named "Pinebrook". Then, Pete got a deal with Tempo, Kansas City based midsize CCM label and released 3 albums "You Were There"(1976), "Hideaway"(1977) and "Off The Beaten Path" (1979). To be honest, I did not listen to those 70's works because those are said to be too folky and acoustic for AOR/Westcoast lovers. Pete Carlson sought for the change, and Pete decided to work with Keith Thomas, who became well-known later for his producing works with big names including Amy Grant, James Ingram, Whitney Houston, Michael Bolton. Keith Thomas well-arranged keyboard-oriented production brought Pete into the different dimension. Thus, Pete released Keith Thomas producing album “Dreamer's Dream" in 1982, with Day Spring, one of the major CCM labels. I believe that Dunn Huff's guitar solo on the track "The Love Of God" is one of his best sessions in early 1980's. On the other hand, Please note that the album "Dreamer's Dream" includes a typical not-well-arranged Christian Music tune "Thanksong" and on several tunes, Pete's vocal style had not been well-sophistcated as yet. Release: 1982 Label: Day Spring, USA (DST-4101) First Reissued CD Release: 10 February, 2001 (Cool Sound, Inc. Japan, COOL-064) Tracks: 1. Let Him Hold Your Heart 2. Run Inside 3. Dreamer's Dream 4. Chris Eaton / Vision
This is one of the finest CCM albums ever released till now. Please note that Chris Eaton is not coming from U.S.A but from UK. The recording session of this album had been done in London, Los Angeles and Nashville, supported by many talented studio musicians. Chris Eaton was born in West Midlands, UK on 16 September, 1958. Eaton became known in UK music industry by two songs recorded by Clif Richard for Richard’s 1981 album "Wired For Sound". "Little Town" written for Clif Richard for 1982 album "Now You See Me, Now You Don't" climbed up the UK chart and ranked # 11 highest, which gave him another step. Eaton got a chance to write two songs for Amy Grant for the album "Unguarded"(1985) and at the same time he got a deal as a solo singer with Reunion Records, USA. Thus, "Vision" was released in 1986 in the United States. The sound of this album is still fresh one for me due to mid 1980's gorgeous keyboards oriented arrangement with tight drums. We had to wait for almost 10 years until Eaton released his second solo album "Wonderful World"(Sparrow Corporation SPD1431) in 1995, which was also fine album. Release: 1986 Label: Reunion Records, USA (WR-8349) First Reissued CD Release: July, 1991 (Reunion Records, REND-24355) Tracks: 1. Vision 2. Don't Underestimate My Love 3. When My Heart Breaks 4. Bruce Hibbard / Time Waits
First of all, you should know that this is not a kind of unreleased materials / demos collection CD. Yes, Bruce Hibbard, known for his masterpiece CCM/AOR album "Never Turnin' Back", broke 2 decades silence with this then-new album "Time Waits" in the end of 2000. Bruce Hibbard shown his top quality melodies survives as he did 20 years ago. I believe that the Opening tune "The Years" must attract you when you listen to it only once. The best tune of this album "Time Waits" follows. If I dare to inform you of the only regrettable thing for this album, it must be the cheap drum programming all through the album. However, Hibbard melodies are surprisingly much greater than those appeared on his masterpiece "Never Turnin' Back".
