Riding Bean
Riding Bean is a 1989 anime original video animation following the exploits of courier-for-hire Bean Bandit and his partner, gunwoman Rally Vincent. You may assume that this album should be a kind of typical soundtrack for Japanese animation video, when you see the artwork of this album. Answer is definitely "No"! Once you start to listen to this album, you are obliged to change your basic stance when you come across this kind of soundtrack album. I am fully aware that some of AOR/Westcoast lovers seems to avoid buying soundtrack or concept albums due to their prejudice and I should point out how they lost chances to listen to good music. This soundtrack album can prove that my observation would be right. This music was written and recorded for a Japanese animation video called "Riding Bean" in 1988 featuring the L.A. "west coast" musicians mainly involved in David Garfield's project band "Karizma". Therefore, this might be said to be alternative or hidden Karizma album. In addition to very very excellent instrumental tunes such as "Bean Bandit Boogie" featuring super guitar performance by Michael Landau, you are able to enjoy several vocal tunes featuring Phil Perry. This CD had been one of the hardest-to-get CDs for a long time even though it was reissued on 19 May, 1993. We were pleased that David Garfield reissued the album as “David Garfield & Friends / Music From Riding Bean” under his own label Creatchy Records in November 2001. Roby Duke / Down To Business
In 1989, 3 years after his third solo album “Blue Eyed Soul” release, Roby Duke, one of the best CCM singers in 1980's, released “Down To Business". Comparing with the third album, Roby sings naturally. This album is undoubtedly a well produced and at time's even attention grabbing set of pop funk gospel tunes. But after a while you begin to wonder what happened to those classic hooks one expects from an album whose players read like a Who's Who of the LA session scene. As gospel music often goes, this isn't a bad album. Roby Duke has a nice smokey edge to his voice and the higher than high playing and competent lyrics lock together well enough. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if Christian music is to appeal to a wider audience than its current one more thought must go into discovery of those hooks which actually make, popular music popular. The day after Christmas, 2007 Roby Duke suffered a heart attack and went home to be with the Lord. He was 51 years old. Release: 1989 Label: Good News Records, USA (7018127696) Tracks: 1. I Try (Walk In The Park) 2. Dreams Alive 3. I Shall See God 4. Moon Over Me (Waiting For You) 5. Rain 6. Down To Business 7. Modern Man (Want Will Steal Your Heart Away) 8. Maybe 9. Alan Thomas / Island
Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter Allan Thomas started his professional music career in his native New York City at age eighteen in 1966 when he signed his first record deal, releasing two singles on Scepter Records. After Thomas' first album, "A Picture," was released by Sire Records in 1971, he moved to the Hawaiian Islands in 1983. Thomas continued to record demos without record deal there by late 1980’s. Thomas flew to Los Angeles with the idea of new songs and started to record four songs with Stephen Barncard, who produced and engineered Thomas’ demos of 1980 - 1982. Michael Ruff was the first choice as keyboard player for both Thomas and Barncard, so asked him to record with them. The result was that Michael Ruff took a major part of the record, providing head arrangements. And it should be noted that Thomas could have Valerie Carter to sing harmony on the chorus of a song “No Win Situation”. Despite that the album recording sessions were finished in Los Angeles and went back to Hawaii, Thomas and his producer could not get a label deal, hence they started their own Black Bamboo Recordings and finally the album “Island” was released in 1990. According to Allan Thomas, the “Island” CD has been sold about seven thousand copies and to this day people still buy it from the artist on-line. Personally I came across the CD in the summer of 1997. Release: 1989 Label: Black Bamboo Records, USA (BBCD-210) Tracks: 1. Hold On Tightly 2. Our Little Secret 3. Across Blue Water 4. WindRider 5.
