Roby Duke / Down To Business
In 1989, 3 years after his third solo album “Blue Eyed Soul” release, Roby Duke, one of the best CCM singers in 1980's, released “Down To Business". Comparing with the third album, Roby sings naturally. This album is undoubtedly a well produced and at time's even attention grabbing set of pop funk gospel tunes. But after a while you begin to wonder what happened to those classic hooks one expects from an album whose players read like a Who's Who of the LA session scene. As gospel music often goes, this isn't a bad album. Roby Duke has a nice smokey edge to his voice and the higher than high playing and competent lyrics lock together well enough. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if Christian music is to appeal to a wider audience than its current one more thought must go into discovery of those hooks which actually make, popular music popular. The day after Christmas, 2007 Roby Duke suffered a heart attack and went home to be with the Lord. He was 51 years old. Release: 1989 Label: Good News Records, USA (7018127696) Tracks: 1. Roby Duke / Blue Eyed Soul
Mississippi born Roby Duke, one of the best CCM singers in 1980's, was successful to release "Not The Same" on Songbird, MCA Christian divisio in 1982 and followed by another top quality album “Come Let Us The Reason" in 1984 for Good News Records distributed by Word/Epic. The next album was this 1986 “ Blue Eyed Soul” for the same label, that was first one originally released on CD. The album "Blue Eyed Soul" may give you a bit different feel, because the album is a little too electric alike Go West in those days. Roby Duke / Come Let Us Reason
Roby Duke, one of the best CCM singers in 1980's, was born in Mississippi on December 6, 1956. Roby moved to Nashville for seeking the possibility as professional singer / songwriter around 1976, but not successful. In 1978, Roby moved to Los Angeles for another possibility, and as the result he could get a deal with Songbird, MCA Christian division. Thus, his first album "Not The Same" was released in 1982. However, due to the close of business of Songbird label (MCA), Roby had to find out other label in spite of a little success of his first album. The new label was Good News Records, established by Freddy Piro, known as the producer of Ambrosia and distributed by Word/Epic, which released Roby's followed 4 albums "Come Let Us The Reason" (1984), "Blue Eyed Soul" (1986), "Down To Business" (1989) and "Bridge Divine" (1994). "Come Let Us The Reason" is of the highest quality, not less than "Not The Same". Personally, I believe "Come Let Us The Reason" is much better ! When you listen to Dann Huff's exciting guitar performance and Richard Page & Steve George's backing up vocals, you will agree with me. Whilst Good News Records released following three albums on CD, thus was only released on vinyl. Hence, "Come Let Us The Reason" was one of the sought-after reissued albums on CD and would like to send my sincere gratitude to Toshi Nakada, Cool Sound Inc again now in 2021. Release: 1984 Label: Good News Records, USA (GNR-8118) First Reissued CD Release: 10 September, 2000 (Cool Sound, Inc. Japan, COOL-054) Tracks 1. Come Let Us Reason 2. All Lost 3. I'm Persuaded 4.
