Jaki Whitren and John Cartwright coming from UK got a recording deal with Elektra when they were making demo materials in New York. And they released this album "Rhythm Hymn" which has crossover sound between British Pop and New York sophisticated blue-eyed soul music. Eye To Eye / Eye To Eye
"Eye To Eye" is the duo comprising of Julian Marshall, a keyboard player from UK, and Deborah Berg, a female vocalist from Seattle,USA. Julian Marshall had done another duo with female singer, "Marshall Hain" in late 1970's, which released the album "Free Ride" in UK (same album released in USA was titled as "Dancing In The City".) The reason why the unknown pop duo "Eye To Eye" got people’s attention was, as you guess, mainly because of an album produced by Gary Katz known for his works with Steely Dan. It is said that "Eye To Eye" started its duo activity in 1979 by releasing their single record "Am I Normal ?" c/w "Tonight Insomnia" under Automatic Records UK. In 1982, they released first album "Eye To Eye" produced by Gary Katz and first single "Nice Girls" hit Billboard Top 40. If I explain to their music style, "Eye To Eye" was "Basia-vein pop heavily influenced from Steely Dan." Release: 1982 Label: Warner Bros. Andrew Gold began a career as a solo artist in 1975 with self-titled debuted album. His 1976 second solo album “What's Wrong With This Picture?” and the following third solo album “All This and Heaven Too” were commercially successful. You may feel the mid-1960's Beatles, especially the influence from Paul McCartney when you listen to Andrew Gold's third solo album "All This Heaven Too". Dan Seals / Harbinger
In 1982, Dan Seals released his 2nd solo album "Harbinger" which includes "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind" written by Steve Wilson and Kelly Wilson of Wilson Bros. The other remarkable songwriting credit is Rick Bowles for "In My Heart". And on this second solo album "Harbinger", Dan Seals covered an Airplay's tune "It Will Be Alright". Those two albums are very good Westcoast album with a little country music taste, but commercially it was difficult to say those were successful. As the result, his 1983 third solo album "Rebel Heart" could not be recognised as AOR / Westcoast album anymore, that was the good Pop Country Music. He released successful country music albums in late 1980’s and 1990’s. Engald Dan Seals / Stones
Danny Wayland Seals, aka Dan Seals or England Dan, the younger brother of Jim Seals from the Seals and Crofts, began the duo with John Colley (aka John Ford Coley), his high school classmate in mid 1960’s. The duo signed with A&M Records in 1970 and released the first album as England Dan & John Ford Coley in 1971. "Simone". the single from 1972 second album “Fables” became smash hit in Japan and France. "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" written by Parker McGee from their 1976 album “Nights Are Forever” peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The duo split in 1980 when Seals decided to pursue solo career. "Stones" is his first solo album produced by Kyle Lehning, the producer for England Dan Seals and John Ford Coley, also known for his production of Wilson Bros, a masterpiece of AOR / Westcoast. In addition to names of the musicians for the recording including Steve Lukather, Mike Baird, Ed Greene, David Foster and Tom Kelly, songwriters are remarkable. “How Do I Survive” is written by Paul Bliss, “Holdin' Out For Love” is written by Cynthia Weil, Tom Snow. Le Roux / So Fired Up
Le Roux appeared from Louisiana as the Cajun flavored pop-rock group in late 1970's. After releasing two albums under Capitol Records, they changed their music style on their third album "Up" more Journey-esque, mainstream production. In 1981, Le Roux moved to RCA and succeeded with the top-20 hit "Nobody Said It Was Easy (Looking For The Lights)" on their fourth album "Last Safe Place". However, the lead singer left the group and as the result Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen joined for this fifth and final album "So Fired Up" released in 1983. Yes, as you know, Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen joined TOTO as the lead singer replacing Bobby Kimball. On this "So Fired Up" album, Fergie reveals his genious talent as a vocalist with excellent high-tone voice. You may be aware that the 1999 reissued CD artwork is the different from the original vinyl. Furthermore, you may be aware that the order of the tracks is also different from the original one. And one bonus track "Back In America" (lead vocal by Terry Brock, not Fergie!) is added. You can reconfirm the young powerful Fergie's vocal talent with energy when you listen to 1999 reissued CD edition. Jerry Corbetta got known by his activity with the band named "Sugerloaf" released the same title album including Billboard number 3 hit "Green-Eyed Lady" in 1970. Jerry disbanded Sugerloaf in 1977 and at the same time got the solo artist deal with Warner Bros. On this self-titled first solo album released in 1978, Corbetta revealed his talent as a singer-songwriter very much and you can enjoy not only Jay Graydon's exellent guitar but also well-known wonderful tune "I Wish That I Was Making Love (To You Tonight)" covered by Alessi in 1979. Fine Pop Westcoast album this is. In early 1980’s, Corbetta joined Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons as their singer and musical director, and remained with them through 1984. Ambrosia / Road Island
This is Ambrosia's fifth album. After releasing this album, Ambrosia had stopped their band activity until 1990. As you know, Ambrosia restarted their live performances and also released their Anthology album including 2 brand-new songs in 1997. On this fifth album, more British progressive Ambrosia sounds, their musical roots shown on their first and second albums, were there. So, do not complain to me that this is not pure AOR / Westcoast album comparing their masterpiece albums "One Eighty" and/or "Life Beyond L.A.". The band appointed James Gutherie as the producer, known for his engineering work with Pink Floyd. Release: 1982 Label: Warner Bros. When you listen to David Lasley's falsetto vocals and his songwritings heavily influenced by black music, you might not think he is a blue-eyed soul singer songwriter. David moved to Los Angeles and wrote many Westcoast hit tunes such as "Jojo" performed by Boz Scaggs and this gave him a chance to get a deal as a solo artist.
