Sons Of Champlin / Welcome To The Dance
"Welcome To The Dance" is the fourth album of the Sons Of Champlin came out of legendary Psychedelic San Francisco rock movement. The Sons of Champlin was formed by Bill Champlin in 1965 with guitarist Terry Haggerty, sax player Tim Cain, bassist John Prosser and drummer Jim Meyers.By late 1967 the lineup had changed to include keyboardist/saxman Geoff Palmer, trumpeter Jim Beem, bassist Al Strong, and drummer Bill Bowen. The first album “Fat City” was recorded in 1967 for Trident Records but was shelved until 1999 when it was released on CD in UK. In 1968, the band successfully signed with Capitol Records, releasing their double-album debut “Loosen Up Naturally” in April 1969. The album “Sons” followed in the fall of 1969 but in February 1970, the band broke up. The Sons reformed in late 1970 as a five-piece band without Tim Cain to record “Follow Your Heart”, but they broke up once more in April, 1971. The Sons restarted featuring a new rhythm section, with drummer Bill Vitt and bassist David Schallock and recorded this album. On this album, Sons apparently established their own soul-funk boogie rock style based on their roots in blues, R&B and Jazz. The Bliss Band / Neon Smiles
The Bliss Band appeared in fornt of us in 1978 with their debut album "Dinner With Raoul" produced by Jeff Baxtor.Paul Bliss, born and raised in the United Kingdom, started his professional musician's career as the bass player / vocalist with the British hard rock band "Dog Soldgier" which released an album in 1975. After leaving this band, Paul started his own band and made demos for the contract but in vein in the UK. Thus Paul sent out their demo tapes to the man working for ABC / Blue Thumb Records. When the Doobie Borthers came to UK and by accident had a chance to listen to the demo tape and touched it. Thus, the Bliss Band got a chance to perform as the opening act for Doobies and got a deal with Columbia Records, USA. Jeff Baxtor gave their first album a touch of Steely Dan. Compared with this acclaimed 1st album "Dinner With Raoul", this 2nd album "Neon Smiles" rocks. And you can enjoy the original version of "How Do I Survive",well-known by Amy Holland's version, on this album. For your information, Peter Bliss released his own solo album "The Edge Of Coincidence" in 1997. S.S. Fools
Let me allow to start by explaining the famous story of the band, i.e. where the group name of S.S. Fools was coming from. I believe that you should at least hear the name of the famous rock group "Three Dog Night". Three Dog Night released their 8th album "Seven Separate Fools" reached number 6 on the Billboard Top 100 Album Chart in 1972. Joe Schermie, Floyd Sneed and Michael Allsup, three members of S.S. Fools was the member of Three Dog Night and the album "Seven Separate Fools" was the last album which all of those three members were involved. S.S. Fools was banded in the end of 1975, around when Floyd Sneed left Three Dog Night. Those three ex. Three Dog Night members started their new group album with the producer named Richard Podolor, who were also involved in Three Dog Nights albums before 1974. Bobby Kimball, known later as the original lead singer of TOTO came from Louisiana to Los Angeles and joined the group. (It might be interested that Bobby Kimball left the Louisiana band named "The Levee Band", which was the origin of "Louisiana Le Roux" because Fergie Frederiksen, the 2nd singer of TOTO, joined "Le Roux" much later.) Thus S.S. Fools completed their one and only album "S.S. Fools" in 1976. You can enjoy pre-TOTO Bobby Kimball's funky soulful rock vocals on this album. Far Cry / The More Things Change...
It was July 1973 when Phil Galdston, a songwriter born in New York in September 1950, met Peter Thom coming from Montreal, Canada, who had already released his solo album "Peter Thom" in 1972 under United Artists. Those two talented musicians started songwriting collaboration and made demos for label shopping. "Why Don't We Live Together" performed by Barry Manillow in 1975 was successful enough to get an album deal. They completed their album "American Gypsies" produced by John Simon as the duo Galdston & Thom in 1977. However, this album did not sell well in spite of good reviews among true music lovers. They seemed to consider how they should do for much more highly acclaimed review and good sales. As Far Cry, Phil Galdston and Peter Thom succeeded to complete the perfect album "The More Things", the Steely Dan's "Aja" vein album by getting Elliot Scheiner known for his works with Steely Dan and also Donald Fagen himself on the backing vocals. True masterpiece album I admit. Release: April, 1980 Label: Columbia Records, USA (NJC-36286) First Reissued CD Release:20 June, 2001 (Sony Music Entertainment, Japan, SRCS-9840) Tracks 1. Fools Gold / Mr. Lukcy
Fools Gold is the late 1970's rock group of Danny Henson, and Tom Kelly known as one of talented song writers who composed Madonna's "Like A Virgin", Cyndy Lauper's "True Colors" and Whitney Houston's "So Emotional" with Billy Steinberg. Fools Gold was formed as the backing up band for Dan Fogelberg. The band members were Tom Kelly (vocals, Bass), Denny Henson (guitar, vocals), Ron Grinel (drums) and Doug Livingston (keyboards, vocals) when their first album was released in 1976. Danny Henson explained why Fools Gold had became duo comprising Tom and Danny when their 2nd album "Mr. Lucky" was released. He said that the second album was originally intended to be released with Arista Records and Keith Olsen, the producer gathered not a few talented studio musicians such as David Foster, David Paich, Bill Champlin, Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro and Waddy Wachtel as listed. That caused over budget problems and Arista Records denied to release this over-budget album. Thus, CBS offered to buy master tape of the album and released "Mr. Lucky" in 1977. Journey / Arrival
The Journey’s 11th studio album was released in Japan 3 months ahead of worldwide with a substituted song in October 2000. The album was the first full-length studio album with lead vocalist Steve Augeri (ex. Tall Stories) and with Deen Castronovo (ex. Bad English). It was a little surprise for me that this album included not only hard-edge Journey Rock tunes but also typical Journey ballads tunes. Arrival received mixed critical reviews, with some considering the album formulaic, while praising such elements as Neal Schon's guitar playing. The 2001 US edition was released with 2 alternate tracks "World Gone Wild" and "Nothin' Comes Close" and "I'm Not That Way" was dropped. The US CD edition features an edited version of "To Be Alive Again", the full version is only on the Japanese CD. And the artworks was also replaced with the black one ( see the second pohoto). Hard Candy
The artworks of Doheny’s second album is very much stylish, I think. It was done by Moshe Brakha, who was also known for his artworks of Boz Scaggs’ masterpiece album “Silk Degrees”. In 1974, Doheny met Hamish Stuart, the Average White Band. Doheny wrote two songs with Stuart; “What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me” and A Love of Your Own”. A demo of “A Love of Your Own” came to the attention of Steve Cropper, as a result Cropper would be the producer of this album “Hard Candy” and following one “Prone”. It was widely said that Cropper gave Doheny a blue-eyed soul funk. Toto XX: 1977-1997
Losing Joseph Williams after Seventh One tour ended in July 1988, Toto started to struggle without proper lead vocalist in 1990’s. Toto recorded and released “Kingdom of Desire” in 1991, about which I had to say was in chaos. The worst thing happened.... Jeff Porcaro died in an accident on August 5, 1992, at the age of 38. The 1995 album “Tambu” was much worse one for me, very heavy-metal without elegance, missing Paich and Porcaro sophisticated keyboards, a departure from Toto's sound of the late 1970s and 1980... I reviewed those two albums that should have been called as Steve Lukather's Band’s or The New Los Lobotomys’, rather than Toto’s. Celebrating the band 20th anniversary, David Paich and Steve Lukather went through good-old unreleased materials featuring Bobby Kimball and Joseph Williams, for releasing Toto XXs, in May 1998. The result was superb. Then, the band had a small promotional tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams. After the tour, Bobby Kimball rejoined the band as lead singer after 14 years. Phew, the band was again on the right track since then. Michael Bolton / All That Matters
Michael Bolton released good blue-eyed soul album in 1997, which was the first studio album since the album “The One Thing” released in 1993. On this album, Bolton was supported by many black contemporary talented musicians such as Babyface, Tony Rich and Barry J. Eastmond. As the result, some kind of brand-new another Michael Bolton's world was there with full of Bolton’s emotional and soulful vocals. Commercially, the album was not successful very much. Middle Man
This album was released in 1980 produced by Bill Schnee following two acclaimed albums "Silk Degrees" (1976) and "Down To The Left" (1977), both of which were produced by Joe Wissert. Whilst Jeff Porcaro, David Hungate, David Paich and Steve Lukather, Toto guys dedicated their abilities to Boz again, David Foster played key role on this album as a keyboard player, a arranger, and a co-songwriter. David Foster wrote or co-wrote 6 songs for this album such as Jojo, Breakdown Dead Ahead and You Can Have Me Anytime. The result of this chemistry was this masterpiece. Meanwhile, it was 1 October, 1982 when we had the very first CD releases on earth (geographically in Japan). “Middle Man” was one of the first 50 titles: serial number 35DP3. (FYI, Billy Joel’s 78 album “52nd Street” was manufactured as the first title - 35DP1 then.) Release: 4 March,1980 Label : Columbia Records, USA (FC36106) Tracks: 1. Jojo 2. Breakdown Dead Ahead 3. Silk Degrees
The 1976 seventh album “Silk Degrees” released on Columbia Records peaked at No. 2 and spent 115 weeks on the Billboard 200, certified five times platinum and remains Boz’s best selling album. The key for success of this recording must be collaboration with young session musicians who later formed Toto; David Hungate, Jeff Porcaro and David Paich. Jeff Porcaro surely added his beautiful grooves to the album, particularly on “Lowdown”, the first single from the album. “Lido Shuffle” was another proof how Jeff Porcaro was the best drummer in rock history. And David Paich contributed his songwriting talent to 6 songs out of 10 on the album. Lastly, you would appreciate that 2007 (and later) edition was reissued with three bonus tracks recorded live at the Greek Theatre on 15 August, 1976.
