Van der Graaf Generator "The Charisma Years 1970 - 1978" (2021)

2021年にUniversal/Virgin/CharismaからリリースされたCD 17枚/BD ３枚のボックスセット。
特に限定版とはされなかったが、初回リリース時のものはすぐに売り切れとなった。2022年春に、再プレスが出るとのことで予約受付が同年１月末から一部のショップで始まっている。BD３枚のうち、映像はBD3の一枚のみ。BD1とBD2は、各アルバムの5.1chサラウンド・ミックスとハイレゾ音源を収録したもの。

今回のボックスセットに収録された新ステレオ・ミックスは、目玉の一つで、オリジナル・ミックスが「リマスター」であるのに対して、録音当時のオリジナル・マルチ・トラック・マスター・テープから新たにミックスダウンされていることで、オリジナル・ミックスでは表面上に出てこなかった音がいくつも出てきているのだ。中にはボツになったテイク（トラック）が採用されたりしており、録音当時の、ミックスダウンでのバンドとプロデューサの取捨選択の様子が想像できるようになっている。

収録されているボーナス・トラックの多くは、既発のリマスター版に収録されているが、一部に初出のものが含まれている。また、ブックレットには、コアなファンから提供された貴重な写真が多く収録されており、初出も多い。気を付けないといけないのは、オリジナル・ミックスのディスクのボーナストラックと、新ステレオ・ミックスのディスクのボーナストラックは同じではない、ということだろう。

収録アルバムは、２ndから８作目までのスタジオ・アルバムと９作目のライブまでの全８作品。そのうち、３作目から６作目までについては、今回、新たなステレオ・ミックスが別物として追加されている。これら４作品は、ボックスとは独立した個々のアルバムとして、２CD（オリジナルミックスと新ステレオミックス）＋１DVD（5.1chと新ステレオを加えたハイレゾ音源）の構成でそれぞれ発売されている。オーディオ・ファンであれば、DVDオーディオとBDオーディオの違いを聴き比べてみてもいいかもしれない。

"The Charisma Years" features all of Van der Graaf Generator's albums from 1970 to 1978, as well as two full-length
concerts from 1975 and 1976, all extant BBC recordings, studio sessions, and videos. In addition to each album being
newly remastered, "H To He, Who Am The Only One", "Pawn Hearts", "Godbluff", and "Still Life" also received new stereo
and 5.1 surround mixes. These albums were also released in their own 2CD/1DVD packages, featuring both stereo mixes on
two CDs and all three mixes on DVD.
