Hiroshi Shinkawa / Shinkies
The label producer of aosis records, Hiroshi Shinkawa released his own second effort for the label "Shinkies" recorded in Los Angeles with his old buddies. This album includes 6 favorite tunes of his own, all of which makes us comfortable every time beyond the age. This album is opened by "It's The Falling In Love" written by David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager and originally performed by Carole King on her second album "Too". And the famous Chaka Kahn's smash hit "Wat'cha Gonna Do For Me" written by Ned Doheny and Harmish Stewart follows. Yumi Kawamura, a Japanese female singer, sings these two songs very well. Then 4 instrumental tunes continues. On "Altogether Alone" written and originally performed by Hirth Martinez, you would fully enjoy Michael Landau's gentle jazzy electric guitar solo. Sax solo by Tom Scott is also marvelous on Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Under The Jamaican Moon" written by Stephen Bishop with Leah Kunkel. The most important thing might be that Curt Bisquera plays real drums on all the tracks, which should make the music alive and give the album humanity. Release: 24 January, 2001 Label: aosis records, Japan (VICL-69036) Tracks: 1. It's The Falling In Love 2. What'cha Gonna Do For Me 3. Altogether Alone 4. Mercy Mercy Me 5. Under The Jamaican Moon 6. Michael McDonald / The Voice Of Michael McDonald
In November 2000, Rhino Records released Michael McDonald's compilation album from the Doobie Brothers years to an out-take of "Blue Obsession" originally planned to be released under Warner Music in 1998. Four Doobies tunes featuring Michael McDonald such as “Takin' To The Street", "What A Fool Believes", fourteen solo-years works including two previously unissued tracks "Higher Ground" originally performed by Stevie Wonder and "Tell It Like It Is" known by Aaron Nevil's version are gathered on this collection album. It might be remarked that "Yah Mo B There" duet with James Ingram from Ingram's album "It's Your Night" (1983) and "On My Own" duet with Patti Labelle appeared on Patti's album "Winner In You" (1986) can be listened on this album. And further, What should I say the fact that David Pack's "I Just Can't Let Go"(1985), on which Michael sings background with James Ingram are also included. It is a little bit strange that this best album is only available either in Europe and in Japan, but not available in the United States. Release Date: 22 November, 2000 (Japan) Label: Rhino Records, Germany ( 8122-73530-2) / Warner Music, Japan (WPCR-10818) Tracks: 1. Takin' It To The Streets 2. It Keeps You Runnin' 3. Greg Guidry / Soul'd Out
Bouncing back onto the AOR/Westcoast music world, Gregg Guidry came on strong with 11 songs in his familiar style, for Japanese listeners, Cool Sound released "Soul'd Out" in December 2000. "Soul'd Out" had been originally planned to be released under Emerald Records, his own label in 1998 with the alternative track listing. Instead of self-release only in the limited market, Guidry continued to seek for wider distribution possibility and a suitable label and sent out the rough-mix tape of this album with his unreleased collection, which has been released as "Private Session" by Cool Sound Inc., Japan early spring 2000. As a result, Guidry finally found out most suitable label for his then-new album "Soul'd Out" and he decided to revise the track listing to add several old recording materials, "Ball And Chain" and "Number One" recorded in 1989 and also add then-new recording material "Send This Dedication". Bruce Hibbard / Time Waits
First of all, you should know that this is not a kind of unreleased materials / demos collection CD. Yes, Bruce Hibbard, known for his masterpiece CCM/AOR album "Never Turnin' Back", broke 2 decades silence with this then-new album "Time Waits" in the end of 2000. Bruce Hibbard shown his top quality melodies survives as he did 20 years ago. I believe that the Opening tune "The Years" must attract you when you listen to it only once. The best tune of this album "Time Waits" follows. If I dare to inform you of the only regrettable thing for this album, it must be the cheap drum programming all through the album. However, Hibbard melodies are surprisingly much greater than those appeared on his masterpiece "Never Turnin' Back". Journey / Arrival
The Journey’s 11th studio album was released in Japan 3 months ahead of worldwide with a substituted song in October 2000. The album was the first full-length studio album with lead vocalist Steve Augeri (ex. Tall Stories) and with Deen Castronovo (ex. Bad English). It was a little surprise for me that this album included not only hard-edge Journey Rock tunes but also typical Journey ballads tunes. Arrival received mixed critical reviews, with some considering the album formulaic, while praising such elements as Neal Schon's guitar playing. The 2001 US edition was released with 2 alternate tracks "World Gone Wild" and "Nothin' Comes Close" and "I'm Not That Way" was dropped. The US CD edition features an edited version of "To Be Alive Again", the full version is only on the Japanese CD. And the artworks was also replaced with the black one ( see the second pohoto). Days In Avalon
Richard Marx's first studio recording album of 2000’s "Days In Avalon" was released under his own label, Signal 21 Music (available through Navarre Corporation's music division, who signed an exclusive distribution agreement, in the U.S. and Canada then). As well-known, the reason Richard Marx left Capitol Records is said to be that Capitol insisted that Richard should have sweet and mellow ballad-type potential hit tunes alike "Right Here Waiting" or "Hold On To The Nights" on his former album "Flesh and Bone", which made the delay of the album release. Further, Richard did not satisfy with the fact that Capitol did not promote "Flesh and Bone" very much. On this album, Richard did what he could not do with Capitol. I felt that the basic concept of this album should be simple arrangement with less keyboards. To be honest, I was expecting that Richard would make more Westcoast-oriented rock album like his debut album. I am obliged to feel that this album is too simple and with a little bit excessive country-flavor probably achieved by the country-field musicians such as Eddie Bayers (drums), and/or Paul Franklin (Slide Guitar). Richard's melodies are still great as he wrote "This I Promise You" for 'Nsync. Therefore, I believed Richard blow out his frustration by making this album as he wanted and I would have had high expectation that he must be back with more pop great album after this one, then. Release: 24 October, 2000 Label : Signal 21 Music, USA (S21C 10001) Tracks: 1. Days In Avalon 2. Shine 3. Someone Special 4. Almost Everything 5. The Edge Of Forever 6. Power Of Your And Me 7. Suzy K / As I Am
Suzy K, a native New Yorker, moved with her family to Southern California at age eleven. She grew up there and found herself who wanted to be a pop singer. Thus, Suzy gave a two-song demo tape to her brother, a Beverly Hills dentist, who then played it for a high-powered entertainment attorney held captive during a dental exam. In short order, the duly impressed attorney introduced Suzy to record executive Tom Callahan, and Suzy began work on her 1996 debut album "Coast of Paradise" for the Coyote Records label. Suzy released her 2nd album " As I Am" in the summer of 2000 with many remarkable beautiful warmhearted tracks such as "Now I Know" written and originally performed as a commercial song for Nissan Cedric only in Japan by Stephen Bishop. And Suzy covers "Broken Wings", a smash hit of Mr. Mister, which is arranged by Richard Page. The other songs should also be noted because of marvelous name of songwriters ; "Half As Wild" written by Mark Goldenberg with Kit Hain ( known for "Marshall Hain", the duo unit with Julian Marshall, later known for "Eye To Eye" ), "Love Has Found This Heart" written by Billy Steinberg (ex I-Ten) and Jeff Pescetto.
