David Pomeranz / Born For You
David Pomeranz is well-known for his songwriting the number 1 hits "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" and "The Old Songs" recorded by Barry Manilow and/or "Fire Down Below" performed by BonJovi's Richie Sambora, which was featured in Steven Seagal's movie "Long Way Around" Seagal's 1997 Warner Bros. movie. At the same time David was highly acclaimed as a singer in early 1970's with his MCA albums "New Blues"(1971), and "Time To Fly" featuring jazz greats Chick Corea, Billy Cobham, Airto and Eddie Gomez. In the late 70's, David released another album, "It's In Every One Of Us". And "The Truth Of Us" (1981) was one of the popular AOR / Westcoast albums in those days here in Japan, mainly because his self-performance version of "The Old Song" was featured in the soundtracks of the trendy Japanese movie titled "Nantonaku Crystal". "Born For You", this album David recorded for MCA Universal Records Philippines, features 14 love songs including re-recordings of his classics: "The Old Songs" and "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again', as well as 8 new songs. The album "Born For You" was sold more than 280,000 copies in Philippine. Thus David Pomeranz restarted to release his beautiful music since 1999 in South East Asian region. Last but not least, as regards this album "Born For You", Singapore edition followed in 2000 with a bonus track "Singapore Girl". Now Japanese edition is also released with a bonus track "Tokyo Girl" which is the same tune with different lyrics as "Singapore Girl" with LP-style Paper Sleeve jacket. Buzz Feiten / Whirlies
It was the end of 1999 when I listened to one of the best guitarists, Buzz Feiten's earthy rock project "Whirlies" CD. I have received the CD through Thoughtscape Sounds, the best Westcoast/ AOR mail order retailer which was regrettably closed their business early 2000. I was very surprised very first time to listen to this album because I expected Buzzy more contemporary jazz oriented style or more sophisticated rock. However, Buzzy shown me bluesy side of his guitar. Buzzy Feiten explained the sound of Whirlies as "Greasy Pop". Even though it seems difficult to get the original Indies release in the states, we had Japanese edition with a bonus track. Kyle Vincent / Sweet 16
Kyle Vincent, ex the lead singer in a mid 1980's California pop group called Candy, debuted with his self-titled first solo album in 1997 along with the hit single "Wake Me Up (When the World's Worth Waking Up For). In 1999, Vincent released his unreleased first solo album "Trust" recorded in early 1990's for MCA as "Night Like This". This is another Kyle Vincent's unreleased archive collection album. Vincent commented as follow; "This is a collection of songs that for one reason or another have slipped through the cracks over the past few years. Some were slated for the albums, but we simply ran out of space or time (or money!), while other were just personal demos never meant to be released." Kyle Vincent / Wow & Flutter
In spite that Kyle Vincent, ex. lead singer in the seminal teen power pop band Candy, was successful with his self-titled 1997 solo debut album on Disney's Hollywood Records, that was ranked number 63 on the US national annual album chart, Kyle lost the recording deal with the label. Under the circumstances, Kyle started his own label SongTree Records and self-released his second solo album “Wow & Flutter” in 1999. Bonus CD single "Tell It Goodbye" c/w "The First Thing On My Mind" was added to the Japanese edition. David Lasley / Demos
David Lasley, known for his incredible falsetto vocals and good songwrting works such as "Jojo" performed by Boz Scaggs, made a demo album and distributed in very limited number of vinyl in 1981 for the purpose to show his songwriting talent and to get the deal as a solo artist. As a result, David had succeeded to release his masterpiece album "Missin' Twenty Grand" in 1982 under EMI America. And needless to say, many songs on this demo album were recorded by many artists in 80's. This demo album has been one of most wanted collector-items among crazy Westcoast /AOR fans for a long time because of its marvelous sound quality and perfectness achieved by the support of very talented musicians such as David Sanborn, David Benoit and others. And now, COOL SOUND has succeeded to get this demo album (24 tracks on 2 Vinyl as original) alive again with a quite large number of bonus tracks. 40 tracks on 2 CD remastered by Bob Stone!! For your information, several tunes including on the original Demo album are the alternative version featuring David Lasley's own vocals instead of those of guest vocalists. Lara Fabian
Lara Fabian, the super female singer coming from France / Quebec of Canada, started to invade worldwide music scene with this English vocal international debut album in 1999. The recording of this project were done in Los Angeles and New York with our familiar musicians such as Steve Lukather and Bruce Gaitsch. I dare to repeat my first impression when I listened to her vocals, "Her talent as a vocalist is more than Celine Dion!" It was said that Lara recorded more than 40 songs for the recording sessions of this album, and 12 songs are selected finally considering how the current US music market would respond to this album when it would be on sale. It was my personal impression that some songs were too danceable for her, therefore a kind of dramatic ballads type tunes should replace those if Sony Music Entertainment USA really wanted Lara Fabian to be the real superstar more than Celine by this album. It is well-known that Dianne Warren actually wrote several songs for her and Lara must have recorded those materials, but I do not know whether those songs were good enough for this album. One more thing I dared to say, I also felt that this album should have ignored French Market's musical taste. What I want to say was that several songs seemed to be heard as if Lara sang in French although she sang in English. Anyway, this CD was really good female vocal album whcih was difficult to come across. Worth listening! The album was released in Europe and also in Canada at first. Then, Sony Music Group all over the world released this long-awaited album accordingly. This is the special present from Peter Mayer, well-known for marvelous works as PM and solo works, at the last moment of 1900's. This album is a kind of "Unplugged" studio live albums. According to the announcement towards to his fanclub, the first 1,000 CDs are signed and numbered with autographed promotional photo. This CD consists of 8 great songs, including the never before released "Hair Of The Dog", and all time favorites "India" & "Moonlight Over Paris" acoustic self-remake versions. According to the liner notes of this CD, "Hair Of The Dog" was written with Jay Oliver in 1988 originally for Bonnie Raitt, but never recorded by her unfortunately. Now, you can listen to this unrecorded track as the Peter Mayer's version on this CD. Just for your information, my first impression of this CD is that Peter plays and sings like Paul McCartney. Metropolis / The Power Of The Night
Metropolis is Stan Meisnner's project with Peter Fredette. This project was started back in 1987 with the recording of the demo of the song "Wild And Blue" when Meissner was looking for the right dynamic rock vocalist to sing it. Over the next few years the two worked together on a few more songs but couldn't get around to completing the recording of the Metropolis album until MTM encouraged to complete this project album in 1999 as the result of the 12 year collaboration between Meissner & Fredette. This is really one of good AOR/Melodic Rock projects we have encountered at the last moment before 2000. Stan Meissner, Canadian Singer/Songwriter is well-known for his tunes recorded by many major artists such as Celine Dion, Eddie Money, Rita Coolidge, BJ Thomas, Alias, Triumph,, Eric Clapton, and Lara Fabian. As a recording artist, Stan Meissner has also released 3 good AOR albums "Dangerous Games"(1983), "Windows To Light"(1986) and "Undertow"(1992). Peter Fredette, a top Canadian vocalist backing vocals for artists such as Ian Thomas, has performed and recorded 7 albums with Kim Mitchell since 1984 as a vocalist and bass player, and continues to record and tour with Mitchell as well as the reunion of Kim's original band Max Webster. This Is How Men Cry
Marc Jordan changed his music style more jazzy after releasing his "C.O.W" album in 1990. This album is really a creative calm and sophisticated Jazz Vocal album. This is not a little bit boring Jazz Standard Vocal album, really creative one. Marc Jordan’s good melodies is unchanged and remain the same comparing with his 1970/1980's tunes and at the same time Marc' emotional vocals are really harmonized with the jazz-style instrumental performance. Livefields
This is the live recording album of TOTO 1999 World Tour after the release of the album “Mindfields”. Their 1999 Tour started from 23 February in Warsaw Poland and ended on 8 November in Paris France. And this live recording was done in France (March, 1999). You may be surprised that Bobby Kimball's vocals are superior when you compare with his 1980's works with TOTO. I am happy because Luke's too long guitar solo performance has shortened on this CD. On the contrary, I am not happy because "99", "Africa" and "Children's Anthem" are not on this CD. This CD was released in Europe first. And Japanese version release was postponed twice (first: from original release schedule 21 October, second: from 10 November) and on 22 December, 1999 Japanese edition was released as double CD album (serial number : SRCS-2136, 2137) including "Child Anthem" as a bonus track only for Japan on Disc 2, which contains the same other tracks as Limited Edition Bonus CD including "I Will Remember", "Hold The Line" and "Won't Hold You Back" also recorded live in France (March 1999) plus QuickTime Video tracks of "Melanie" promotion video and "Cruel" recorded live in Yokohama, Japan on 24 April, 1999.
