S.S. Fools
Let me allow to start by explaining the famous story of the band, i.e. where the group name of S.S. Fools was coming from. I believe that you should at least hear the name of the famous rock group "Three Dog Night". Three Dog Night released their 8th album "Seven Separate Fools" reached number 6 on the Billboard Top 100 Album Chart in 1972. Joe Schermie, Floyd Sneed and Michael Allsup, three members of S.S. Fools was the member of Three Dog Night and the album "Seven Separate Fools" was the last album which all of those three members were involved. S.S. Fools was banded in the end of 1975, around when Floyd Sneed left Three Dog Night. Those three ex. Three Dog Night members started their new group album with the producer named Richard Podolor, who were also involved in Three Dog Nights albums before 1974. Bobby Kimball, known later as the original lead singer of TOTO came from Louisiana to Los Angeles and joined the group. (It might be interested that Bobby Kimball left the Louisiana band named "The Levee Band", which was the origin of "Louisiana Le Roux" because Fergie Frederiksen, the 2nd singer of TOTO, joined "Le Roux" much later.) Thus S.S. Fools completed their one and only album "S.S. Fools" in 1976. You can enjoy pre-TOTO Bobby Kimball's funky soulful rock vocals on this album. Faragher Brothers were born and raised in Redlands, California. Danny and Jimmy, elder Faragher brothers started to play and release not a few single records in late 60's as the member of the soft rock band named "Peppermint Trolley Company". In early 70's, Danny and Jimmy formed new band named "Bones" and release an album with Billboard top 100 hit single "Robera" in 1972 and the album "Waiting Here" followed in 1973. Soon, they could got a deal with ABC Records who wanted to find new Blue-Eyed soul mellow funk bands. In 1976, their first album "Faragher Bros" was released and "Family Ties" followed in 1977, both of which did not sell well. In 1978, Faragher Bros made a deal with Polydor and released their third album "Open Your Eyes" with top 50 soft-mellow flavored rock hit "Stay The Night", on which Marty Faragher, youngest Faragher brothers and their sister Pammy Faragher joined. In 1971, young Dan Seals and John Ford Coley released their duo debut single "New Jersey" as England Dan & John Ford Coley under A&M Records. Rosie / Better Late Than Never
In early 70's, David Lasley performed on stage for the well-known musical "Hair". David met Lynn Pitney and Lana Marrano there. This was the starting of the group Rosie. At the early stage, they performed also with Arnold McCuller and the name of the group was "Spoonspell". After all, Arnold left the group and renamed the group as "Rosie". In 1976, they released their first album "Better Late Than Never". They shown R&B, Soul flavor all through this album. This album features Lasley/Marrano composition “Roll Me Through the Rushes,” later a big song for Chaka Khan in 1978. You will reconfirm David Lasley's marvelous vocal talent by listening this early works. Jaye P. Morgan
Jaye P. Morgan is a 1950's well-known popular singer, actress and comedienne. Especially during the '50s, she made quite a name for herself as a vocalist, surprisingly she had 9 US Top20 hits during one year from November 1954 . And she hosted her own TV show, "The Jaye P. Morgan" in mid 1950's. Jaye P. Morgan re-emerged in the 1970s as a comedienne and/or entertainer rather than a singer. Jaye is probably best-known as a panelist on "The Gong Show". Although not as prevalent a personality as a singer, Jaye P. Morgan continued to be the singer in 1970's. This album is the proof of this fact and at the same time one of the best late 1970's session works done by Jay Graydon and David Foster. Other supporting musicians are also marvelous as listed below. I recommend this album as the stepping stone album toward the AOR / West Coast golden years around 1980. Ambrosia / Somewhere I've Never Travelled
Following the successful 1975 self-titled first album featuring "Holdin' On to Yesterday", US top 20 single hit, engineered by Alan Parsons, Ambrosia returned in September 1976 with the second album “Somewhere I've Never Travelled”. The first edition of the record sleeve was released in custom "pyramid" cover, having 3 fold-out panels that turn the cover into a large Pyramid. As the result "Road Island", the fifth Ambrosia album was reissued on CD in Japan in 1999, "Somewhere I've Never Traveled", the 2nd Ambrosia album was left as the last one album to be reissued on CD. Warner Bros, USA digitally remastered and reissued the album with other Ambrosia albums, i.e. "Ambrosia" (1975), "Life Beyond L.A." (1978) and "One Eighty" (1980) in February 2000. Hard Candy
The artworks of Doheny’s second album is very much stylish, I think. It was done by Moshe Brakha, who was also known for his artworks of Boz Scaggs’ masterpiece album “Silk Degrees”. In 1974, Doheny met Hamish Stuart, the Average White Band. Doheny wrote two songs with Stuart; “What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me” and A Love of Your Own”. A demo of “A Love of Your Own” came to the attention of Steve Cropper, as a result Cropper would be the producer of this album “Hard Candy” and following one “Prone”. It was widely said that Cropper gave Doheny a blue-eyed soul funk. Donny Gerrard
Donny Gerrard is known as the lead vocalist of the legendary group "Skylark" featuring David Foster. "Wild Flower" from the first album of Skylark ranked number 9 on the US single chart. After Skylark disbanded, Gerrard started session singer career and had a chance to release a single "(Baby) Don't Let It Mess Your Mind" under Rocket Records established by Elton John in 1975. In 1976, Danny released this first solo album under Greedy Records whose executive were Henry Marx, the producer of this album and now the president of Sin-Drome Records known for Bobby Caldwell's release. It should be stated for you that "Peace For Us All" on this album is the composition of Bobby Caldwell before his making solo debut album in 1978. And It might be remarkable that this album was the early year producing works of Robbie Buchanan known as the member of Maxus. Furthermore, you can enjoy Jay Graydon's super guitar play on this album too. Release: 1976 Label : Greedy Records, USA (G-1002) Tracks: 1. He's Always Somewhere Around 2. Stay Awhile With Me 3. Silk Degrees
The 1976 seventh album “Silk Degrees” released on Columbia Records peaked at No. 2 and spent 115 weeks on the Billboard 200, certified five times platinum and remains Boz’s best selling album. The key for success of this recording must be collaboration with young session musicians who later formed Toto; David Hungate, Jeff Porcaro and David Paich. Jeff Porcaro surely added his beautiful grooves to the album, particularly on “Lowdown”, the first single from the album. “Lido Shuffle” was another proof how Jeff Porcaro was the best drummer in rock history. And David Paich contributed his songwriting talent to 6 songs out of 10 on the album. Lastly, you would appreciate that 2007 (and later) edition was reissued with three bonus tracks recorded live at the Greek Theatre on 15 August, 1976.
