Laboriel Mathieson
Greg Mathieson seemed to be very aggressive around 2000 for releasing CDs. Following the great live album "Live At The Baked Potato" with Abraham Laboriel, Michael Landau and Vinnie Colaiuta. The duet album with Abraham Laboriel was released. The liner notes on the CD says "This project has a simple origin. Poet Quincy Troupe invited Greg and Abraham to play as a duet to provide musical counterpoint for an evening of poetry readings by such gifted artists as Amiri Baraka. Their dialogue was a joy for them and for those who listened. They decided to experiment more with this format and wrote pieces to highlight that dialogue, to accent and interaction of just two voices. These tunes were recorded in a single take without overdubs to capture the intimacy and excitement of the conversation. Enjoy." Marilyn Scott / Walking With Strangers
Marilyn Scott's 7th album "Walking With Strangers" is her first for Prana Entertainment, then new Los Angeles label. Scott’s intimate music fellow such as Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip are tightly backing up her on this brand-new album. When she released late 90’s albums for Warner Jazz, those were much more jazz-oriented than her 80's and early 90's albums full of R&B and/or Free-Soul flavors. As regards this album "Walking With Strangers", she revealed variety of her talent as a singer. The Opening track "Loving You" is a good pop-jazz tune and the following "I Always Think Of You" written by herself would be good-old Marilyn R&B flavored tune. "Give In" reminds me of her early 90's sophisticated Adult Contemporary tunes. Very good! Label: Prana Entertainment, USA (8 06863001-2) Release: 6 November, 2001 Tracks: 1. Loving You 2. I Always Think Of You 3. Give In 4. All Of The Above 5. Beginning With You 6. You Don't Know What Love Is 7. Walking With Strangers 8. Don't Let Love Get Away 9. Who's Looking For Me? 10. Hiroshi Shinkawa / Shinkies
The label producer of aosis records, Hiroshi Shinkawa released his own second effort for the label "Shinkies" recorded in Los Angeles with his old buddies. This album includes 6 favorite tunes of his own, all of which makes us comfortable every time beyond the age. This album is opened by "It's The Falling In Love" written by David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager and originally performed by Carole King on her second album "Too". And the famous Chaka Kahn's smash hit "Wat'cha Gonna Do For Me" written by Ned Doheny and Harmish Stewart follows. Yumi Kawamura, a Japanese female singer, sings these two songs very well. Then 4 instrumental tunes continues. On "Altogether Alone" written and originally performed by Hirth Martinez, you would fully enjoy Michael Landau's gentle jazzy electric guitar solo. Sax solo by Tom Scott is also marvelous on Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Under The Jamaican Moon" written by Stephen Bishop with Leah Kunkel. The most important thing might be that Curt Bisquera plays real drums on all the tracks, which should make the music alive and give the album humanity. Release: 24 January, 2001 Label: aosis records, Japan (VICL-69036) Tracks: 1. It's The Falling In Love 2. What'cha Gonna Do For Me 3. Altogether Alone 4. Mercy Mercy Me 5. Under The Jamaican Moon 6. Kenji Omura / Kenji Shock
This album is one of the true masterpiece fusion album done by Japanese guitarists. Kenji Omura was well-known for his guitar performance with Yellow Magic Orchestra in early 1980's worldwide. This album "Kenji Shock" was his second solo album and has been reissued very first time on CD in the winter of 2000. This album is full of awesome smooth soulful guitar play made by Kenji Omura supported by L.A. top musicians including supporting guitarists like Steve Lukather and Lee Ritenour, and other TOTO members, i.e. Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro and David Paich. Jonathan Butler / The Source
Jonathan Butler, coming from South Africa, is a successful R&B / Fusion performer with a slight jazzy touch. He emerged as a successor of George Benson with his first instrumental guitar-oriented album "Introducing Jonathan Butler" in 1986. According to the liner notes on this album written by Bill Milkowski, the links to such guitar heroes as George Benson and Wes Montgomery are unmistakable. Then Jonathan proved his talent as a vocalist by his self-titled marvelous 2nd album (double vinyl album or 1 CD) "Jonathan Butler" in 1987. He constantly released albums in 80's... "More Than Friends" (1988), "Deliverance" (1990), "Heal Our Land" (1990). It took almost 4 years to release "Head To Head" (1994) under Mercury Records. Jonathan moved to the United States from UK when he made a deal with N2K Encoded Music and released "Do You Love Me?" in 1997. And followed by the album "Story Of Life" (1999). Full Moon
It was around 1967 when Buzz Feiten came across Steve Beckmeier (the brother of Freddie Beckmeier) in his high school days to have local success on Long Island area in New York. Subsequently, Feiten replaced Elvin Bishop in the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and recorded on the group's fifth album “Keep On Moving” (1968), that also had Freddie Beckmeier on bass and Gene Dinwiddie on sax. In 1971, Full Moon project was started by Feiten, Beckmeier and Dinwiddie, with Phillip Wilson, ex Butterfield Blues Band drummer, and Neil Larsen on keyboards, who moved to New York City after his discharge from the Army in 1970 and began session keyboard player career. Full Moon’s self-titled album was produced by Alan Douglas Rubenstein, we’ll-known that he worked with Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, and John McLaughlin, and released on his record label, Douglas Records in 1972. This album shown the musical roots of Larsen Feiten Band. This album was one of the hardest to find vinyl for long time but was reissued on CD in 2000 with a unreleased track "Three Step Dance" newly mixed by Buzz Feiten. Jango / Closer To Home
Jango was often said to be either way that their writing and performing music was so close to Steely Dan's sound when their albums were released in the end of 1990’s and early 2000’s. Consisting of five studio musicians from Los Angeles, Jango released this second album "Closer to home", a great follow-up to their debut release “Dreamtown”, with 6 instrumentals out of 13 songs. The song "Joyful caravan" is dedicated to Curtis Mayfield, personally I like "The way back to heaven" and "Under the influence of love”.
