ルイスは1935年にシカゴで生まれ、4歳のときに初めてピアノを習った。高校生のときに最初のジャズ・グループ、クレフズに入り、その後、徴兵されなかったエルディ・ヤングとレド・ホルトの2人のバンド・メンバーとラムゼイ・ルイス・トリオを結成した。1965年、「The In Crowd」のバージョンがクロスオーバー・ポップスのヒットとなり、ルイスは初のゴールドレコードとグラミー賞のベスト・ジャズ・パフォーマンス賞を獲得しました。ホルトとヤングが自分たちのバンドを結成するために脱退した後、ルイスはベースのクリーブランド・イートン、ドラムのアース・ウィンド＆ファイアーのモーリス・ホワイトと新しいトリオを結成しました。
