Giant / III
Dann Huff is known for his producing works with pop / pop-country artists like Faith Hill and Jewel, otherwise with heavy metal rockers like Megaddeath. After recording 2 commercially unsuccessful albums "White Heart" ('82) and "Vital Signs" ('84) as the member of Christian Rock Band "White Heart", Dann Huff moved to L.A. and started session works, eventually becoming the most requested guitarist. But after years he decided to start his own band, forming Giant with his brother David Huff on drums, Alan PASCAL on keyboards, and Mike Brignardello on bass. They signed with A&M Records and released "Last of the Runaways" in 1989, featuring a melodic hard rock sound with US Top 20 hit "I'll See You in My Dreams." Although the album sold well for a long period, the band found themselves on Epic for their 2nd album "Time to Burn" in 1992. Soon after the 2nd album release, Alan Pasqua let and the band itself soon dissolved. Dan Huff has returned to sessions and producing works in Nashville, and besides working with big artists including Shania Twain and Michael W. Smith. Suddenly in late 2001, we have again faced the band "Giant" with this reunion album "III", the high-tension melodic rock album. At last but not least, it should be noted that Japanese version includes 4 bonus live performance tracks. And, it should be noted that the closing tune "Without Your Love" is the demo recorded in 1983 after the sudden bankrupt of the record company. Laboriel Mathieson
Greg Mathieson seemed to be very aggressive around 2000 for releasing CDs. Following the great live album "Live At The Baked Potato" with Abraham Laboriel, Michael Landau and Vinnie Colaiuta. The duet album with Abraham Laboriel was released. The liner notes on the CD says "This project has a simple origin. Poet Quincy Troupe invited Greg and Abraham to play as a duet to provide musical counterpoint for an evening of poetry readings by such gifted artists as Amiri Baraka. Their dialogue was a joy for them and for those who listened. They decided to experiment more with this format and wrote pieces to highlight that dialogue, to accent and interaction of just two voices. These tunes were recorded in a single take without overdubs to capture the intimacy and excitement of the conversation. Enjoy." Marilyn Scott / Walking With Strangers
Marilyn Scott's 7th album "Walking With Strangers" is her first for Prana Entertainment, then new Los Angeles label. Scott’s intimate music fellow such as Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip are tightly backing up her on this brand-new album. When she released late 90’s albums for Warner Jazz, those were much more jazz-oriented than her 80's and early 90's albums full of R&B and/or Free-Soul flavors. As regards this album "Walking With Strangers", she revealed variety of her talent as a singer. The Opening track "Loving You" is a good pop-jazz tune and the following "I Always Think Of You" written by herself would be good-old Marilyn R&B flavored tune. "Give In" reminds me of her early 90's sophisticated Adult Contemporary tunes. Very good! Label: Prana Entertainment, USA (8 06863001-2) Release: 6 November, 2001 Tracks: 1. Loving You 2. I Always Think Of You 3. Give In 4. All Of The Above 5. Beginning With You 6. You Don't Know What Love Is 7. Walking With Strangers 8. Don't Let Love Get Away 9. Who's Looking For Me? 10. Sayit / Again
Tommy Denander, Swedish guitarist/ songwriter aggressively worked on several projects at the same time in early 2000’s. The SAYIT’s second album was one of them and the most melodic and Westcoast-vein. This album featured a real human drummer instead of programming, which made all the tunes alive. You may be surprised to listen to the last tune "Never Gonna Let You Go". Yes, this is the cover originally performed by David Roberts on his legendary solo album "All Dressed Up"(1982). Tin Drum / Small Parade
Burleigh Drummond, the founding and current drummer of Ambrosia, formed Tin Drum with Mary Harris, in order to keep Burleigh creatively satisfied. In 1995, Tin Drum released their first album " Real World" after almost 6 months recording sessions. The name Tin Drum comes from Gunter Grass' novel, "The Tin Drum", which is the story about a boy who decides that staying young is preferable to growing up. Burleigh says that the name is especially appropriate because the music of Tin Drum is, at times, incredibly playful, young and refreshing-especially the up-tempo percussion, crisp vocals and intoxicating harmonies. In 2001, Tin Drum released their second effort as the album"Small Parade". Release: July, 2001 Label: Blind Eye Music, USA (CD Serial number: none) Tracks: 1. Small Parade 2. Johnny 3. Mathieson, Laboriel, Landau & Colaiuta / Live At The Baked Potato 2000
Greg Mathieson's 1982 "Baked Potato Super Live" album is one of the best super fusion live performance recordings. And now Greg Mathieson released those materials as live performance recordings as "Mathieson, Laboriel, Landau, Colaiuta / Live At The Baked Potato 2000" recorded on June 9, 10 and July 15, 2000.
