Chris Eaton / Vision
This is one of the finest CCM albums ever released till now. Please note that Chris Eaton is not coming from U.S.A but from UK. The recording session of this album had been done in London, Los Angeles and Nashville, supported by many talented studio musicians. Chris Eaton was born in West Midlands, UK on 16 September, 1958. Eaton became known in UK music industry by two songs recorded by Clif Richard for Richard’s 1981 album "Wired For Sound". "Little Town" written for Clif Richard for 1982 album "Now You See Me, Now You Don't" climbed up the UK chart and ranked # 11 highest, which gave him another step. Eaton got a chance to write two songs for Amy Grant for the album "Unguarded"(1985) and at the same time he got a deal as a solo singer with Reunion Records, USA. Thus, "Vision" was released in 1986 in the United States. The sound of this album is still fresh one for me due to mid 1980's gorgeous keyboards oriented arrangement with tight drums. We had to wait for almost 10 years until Eaton released his second solo album "Wonderful World"(Sparrow Corporation SPD1431) in 1995, which was also fine album. Release: 1986 Label: Reunion Records, USA (WR-8349) First Reissued CD Release: July, 1991 (Reunion Records, REND-24355) Tracks: 1. Vision 2. Don't Underestimate My Love 3. When My Heart Breaks 4. Roby Duke / Blue Eyed Soul
Mississippi born Roby Duke, one of the best CCM singers in 1980's, was successful to release "Not The Same" on Songbird, MCA Christian divisio in 1982 and followed by another top quality album “Come Let Us The Reason" in 1984 for Good News Records distributed by Word/Epic. The next album was this 1986 “ Blue Eyed Soul” for the same label, that was first one originally released on CD. The album "Blue Eyed Soul" may give you a bit different feel, because the album is a little too electric alike Go West in those days. When the album "Live At Six Flags" was released in 1986, there is no official information when this live recording was made at Recorded at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, one of the largest amusement theme park in USA opened in 1961, with six themed areas within the park themed after one of the six countries whose flag has flown over Texas during the state’s colorful history, Spain, Mexico, France, Texas, the Old South and the United States of America. It is said to be the live recording in the summer of 1983 or 1984 before "Hot Line" was released in 1985, judging from the tracklisting and including Dann Huff guitar solo. And according to the Christian Music Archive website (https://christianmusicarchive.com/), the members for the live recording is as below; Scott Douglas: Vocals Mark Gersmehl: Keyboards, Vocals Dann Huff: Guitars, Vocals David Huff: Drums, Percussion Gary Lunn: Bass Billy Smiley: Guitars, Vocals Whilst it was said that the live date was likely to be in August 1984 in the past, the other source said that this was recorded on 20 April 1984 at Six Flags Over Texas, on the same day when “Chris Christian With Whiteheart / Live At Six Flags” was recorded. Larry John McNally / Fade To Black
Larry John McNally wrote 2 songs, "A Man In A Man's World" and "Sleep On It", for Chaka Kahn's 1978 solo debut album. McNally signed with ARC Records in 1979 and released his solo debut self-titled album in 1981.This is his 2nd album "Fade To Black" released under ATCO Records. The album was produced by Gary Katz and featuring “The Motown Song" written and originally performed for the soundtrack to the movie Quicksilver starring Kevin Bacon in 1986. And the song became wells-known by the 1991 Rod Stewart version which peaked at number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in September 1991. Generally speaking, McNally’s self-titled solo debut album is more popular and reissued several time (straight reissue in 1994, 2CDs Deluxe edition in 2012 and 2CDs Complete edition in 2019), whilst the album “Fade To Black” was reissued only once on CD by East West Japan (AMCY-2861) on 25 September, 1998 before 2020. Personally speaking, this second album “Fade To Black” is the best McNally album for me as of 2021, because of its stylish arrangements created by the below-listed musicians such as Buzzy Feiton, Dan Huff, Michael Ruff and Leslie Smith. Release: 1986 Label: ATCO Records, USA (7 90524-1) Tracks: 1. My Obsession 2. James Dean 3. The Motown Song 4. Switchblade 5. Long Drag Off Cigarette 6. Chinatown 7. The Beat Generation 8. Don Johnson / Heartbeat
Don Johnsons, an American actor, established his firm status in USA entertainment industry by starring role “Sonny" Crockett as undercover police detective in the television series Miami Vice aired from 1984 to 1990. In 1986 Johnson released the album “Heartbeat” in 1986 and the title track of the album, written by Erik Kaz and Wendy Waldman became Billboard Top 5 hit , and the album was also climbing up on the Billboard chart and peaked at number 17. It was quite natural since here are the songwriters for the album tracks; Bill LaBounty, John Capek, Tony Sciuto, Tom Petty, Bob Seger and Chas Sandford, the producer of the album. The recording was done with all-star musicians including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ron Wood, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson and Bill & Tamara Champlin. Thus , the result was good AOR album of mid 1980’s, without saying. Don Johnson released another album “Let it Roll” in 1989. When the “Heartbeat” was reissued on CD in 1998, 6 tracks from the album “Let It Roll” were added as bonus tracks. Release: September, 1986 Label: Epic Records, USA (EK 40366) Tracks: 1. Heartbeat 2. Rick Riso / Shouting At The Walls
One year later from his solo debut on Home Sweet Home Records in 1985, the second solo album “Shouting At The Walls” followed. Riso’s songwriting is said to be influenced by that of Earth Wind & Fire and/or Gino Vannelli. Personally I felt the atmosphere of Bobby Caldwell’s blue-eyed soul early works. Rick further released “As For My House” in 1994, “Man Of His Hand” in 1995. With his spouse Cathy, he released “One Love” in. 1997 and “As We Enter” in 1999. Release: 1986 Label: Home Sweet Home Records, USA (7010014396) Tracks: 1. Forever 2. Faithful 3. Even If 4. I Find Your Love Again 5. Sure Thing 6. Shouting At The Walls 7. No Fear Of Flying 8. Without Walls
After commercial success of his solo debut, mainly because of “Maniac”, Sembello continued to contribute to movie soundtracks. In 1984, “Gremlins...Mega Madness” for Steven Spielberg’s Ambling Production movie ‘Gremlins”, then “Gravity” for Ron Dante directed hit movie “Coccon” followed in 1985. Thus, A&M Records seemed to have high expectation for Sembello’s second solo album featuring “Gravity”. Tracks shown on the backside of the original US Vinyl was as below ( see the second photo); (Side A) 1. Dangerous 2. Last To Know 3. The Picture 4. Funkabilly Swing 5. Gravity (Side B) 1. Is This The Way To Paradise 2. Angelina 3.Wonder Where Your Are 4. Burn It Up 5. Hysterical. However, the vinyl did have different tracks on it. "Angelina" and "Hysterical" were deleted and instead "What You Really Want" was on it. Only USA cassette and Japanese CD version had "The Picture" and "Angelina", which are 2 tracks among 3 deleted tracks. (see the fourth photo). As far as I know, the later press USA vinyl was with the corrected artwork (see the third photo). Speaking about the deleted track “Hysterical”, as of January 2021, I did not know someone got the vinyl with it. However, the song was recorded by Miki Asakura, Japanese female singer on the album “Love Again” released on 5 May 1985. The song was composed by Steve Dudas with Dick Rudolph. And Miki Asakura sang Japanese lyrics version as ‘Ano Mune Ni Moichido (あの胸にもう一度)”. Michael Sembello and Danny Sembello co-wrote originall English lyrics, thus their name was not credited on Miki Asakura’s version. Lastly, another fact to clarify the reason why two different Japanese versions were released in 1986. When the album was released in April 1986, A&M Records albums were licensed to Alpha Records in Japan. Due to the ending the license contract between A&M and Alpha records, Canyon Records became new A&M business partner in Japan. Hence, in August 1986, Sembello’s “Without Wallls” was re-released in Japan. (see the fourth photo, which you might read D32Y3035 rather than 32XB77. This one is not Alpha version but Canyon version.) Release Date: 21 August, 1986 (USA) / 25 April, 1986 (Japan) Label : A&M Records, USA (SP5044) / Alpha Records, Japan (Vinyl: AMP28150, CD: 32XB77) Tracks: - Vinyl 1. What You Really Want 2.
