Perry & Sanlin / For Those Who Love
I believe you are familiar with Phil Perry, who performs good many smooth jazz vocal session works with David Foster, David Garfield and many others on various albums and releases his own solo albums "The Heart Of A Man" (1991), "Pure Pleasure" (1994), "One Heart, One Woman" (1998) and "My Book Of Love" (2000). Phil Perry started his musical journey with Kevin Sanlin in late 60's as Montclairs, who released several singles; "Hey You" (1969), "All I Really Care About Is You" (1971) and "Dreaming Out Of The Season" (1972) and also released an album in 1973. In late 70's, Phill and Richard moved to Los Angeles and did many background vocal sessions while seeking for the deal. In 1980, they got a chance to release an album "For Those Who Love" under Capitol as a duo, Perry & Sanlin. Their first single "Just To Make You Happy" stalled at number 81. In 1981, second album "We're The Winner" followed, but they became "the winner" commercially. Tavares / Supercharged
The five-brother R&B singing group Tavares are Arthur Tavares, Ralph Vierra Tavares, Perry Lee Tavares, Antone Tavares, and Feliciano Tavares who are nicknamed "Pooch," "Tiny," "Chubby," and "Butch" may be much more familiar. In 1974, their debut album "Check It Out" was issued with Capitol Records. In the summer of 1974, their second album "Hard Core Poetry" followed with the first hit version (number one R&B) of "She's Gone" written by the then relative unknown duo of Darryl Hall and John Oates. In 1975, third album "In the City" produced by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter scored number 26 on pop chart in addition to # 8 on R&B chart. After they released acclaimed R&B album "Sky High" in 1976 and "Love Storm" in 1977, "More Than A Woman" specifically written for them by Bee Gees was issued as a single from the soundtrack album "Saturday Night Fever". "More Than a Woman" was also on their 6th album "Future Bound" in 1978, and was followed by the 1979 album "Madame Butterfly" produced by well-known Philly Soul arranger/producer Bobby Martin. By reading the above biography, you may wonder why I recommend "Supercharged" album here so much... On this album "Supercharged", Tavares embarked new voyage with our musicians including David Foster, Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin. The opener "Bad Times" reached number 47 on pop chart and "We Both Tried" followed, that was written by David Foster and Bill Champlin and well-known for Bill Champlin's version on his album "Single" (1978). Another cover of the song from Bill Champlin 's album "Single" is "I Don't Want You Anymore", also written by David Foster and Bill Champlin. Pages (1981)
The third and final Pages’ album must be the best masterpiece album of early 1980’s. After releasing two albums produced by Bobby Colomby for Epic Records, they switched to Capitol Records since both albums were not successful enough in terms of sales, that is to say, the single from “Future Street” the second album, “I Do Believe In You” peaked number 84 on Billboard Hot 100 in December 1979. Richard Page and Steve George had Jay Graydon to produce the third album, that was again self-titled and released in 1981. Two singles were released from the album, "You Need a Hero" and "Come on Home", which were the only tracks produced by Bobby Colomby on the album. Although the album was produced in perfect shape by Jay Graydon with acclaimed musicians including Jeff Porcaro on drums, the album failed to chart. True music lovers admit that Pages completed their own marvelous music style with Jay Graydon, but the two had to wait for several years when they released "Welcome To The Real World" in 1986 as Mr. Mister. Release: 1981 Label: Capitol Records, USA (ST-12123) First Reissued CD Release: 27 September 1989 (EMI Music, Japan, CP21-6061) Tracks: 1. You Need A Hero 2. Tell Me 3. O.C.O.E. Reed Nielsen - Mark Pearson / Nielsen Pearson + Blind Luck
The late George Reed Nielsen (passed away on 15 November, 2014) and Mark Pearson must be duly appreciated as well as Richard Page and Steve George of "Pages" (later "Mr. Mister") and/or "Bugatti-Musker" in early 1980's music scene. The history of the duo went back to end of the 1960’s. Initially, Nielsen was a drummer, but soon after he began writing with Pearson, he switched to guitar and piano. They formed the Nielsen Pearson Band in the mid-1970’s with John Bowen on bass & vocals and Duane Temme - on drums & vocals. Whilst the band was an opening act at shows in the San Francisco area, such as for Les Dudek. Subsequently they successfully signed by Epic Records in 1977, and released self-titled debut album in 1978. The duo appeared to be influenced by Jackson Browne, and Eagles in terms of music style. Before the duo released their sophomore efforts on Capitol Records, in 1980, they shortened the name of the band as Nielsen Pearson. Musically, the Nielsen Pearson album by the duo was similar, unusual chord changes and superior musicianship delivered by session aces listed as below instead of Bowen and Temme. The album ‘Blind Luck” under the duo’s full name, followed in 1983 again for Capitol, but this was the last one by the duo. In 1998, both albums were reissued on 1 CD very first time. Since then, no remastered reissues of each did not happen as of 2021. - Nielsen Pearson - Release: 1980 Label : Capitol Records, USA (ST-12101) Tracks: 1. Two Lonely Nights 2. Don't Let Me Go 3.
