Parber & Kerstein / Stories From The Heart
Denmark is said to be one of the cetre of good music and I rediscovered one of the hidden Danish treasure in 2001. The treasure was the Parber & Kerstein's early 1990's debut album "Stories From The Heart" produced by Morten Munch (ex."Skagerak"). This one was the only album of Parber & Kerstein. However, they were still active songwriters and were expected to release their brand-new album as the Parber Kerstein Band sometime early 2000’s, but don’t know whether they did. As a matter of fact, Parber & Kerstein released a CD-single "Once In A Lifetime" featuring Tommy Rasmussen (ex-Skagarak) on vocals, the anthem for the official ITU Triathlon World Championship 2001, taken place on the 4th- 5th August 2001 in Fewdericia Denmark. Parber & Kerstein shown how the Scandinavian good hard progressive Westcoast music should be! Target Records Germany reissued the album "Stories From The Heart" with the then brand-new single "Once In A Lifetime" as a bonus track. Release: 1991 Label: Pinapple Records,Denmark (CD9101) Tracks: 1. Intro 2. Keep On Waiting 3. You Could Be The Last 4. I'll Love You Forever 5. Talk Too Much 6. Love Don't Come Easy 7. Giant / III
Dann Huff is known for his producing works with pop / pop-country artists like Faith Hill and Jewel, otherwise with heavy metal rockers like Megaddeath. After recording 2 commercially unsuccessful albums "White Heart" ('82) and "Vital Signs" ('84) as the member of Christian Rock Band "White Heart", Dann Huff moved to L.A. and started session works, eventually becoming the most requested guitarist. But after years he decided to start his own band, forming Giant with his brother David Huff on drums, Alan PASCAL on keyboards, and Mike Brignardello on bass. They signed with A&M Records and released "Last of the Runaways" in 1989, featuring a melodic hard rock sound with US Top 20 hit "I'll See You in My Dreams." Although the album sold well for a long period, the band found themselves on Epic for their 2nd album "Time to Burn" in 1992. Soon after the 2nd album release, Alan Pasqua let and the band itself soon dissolved. Dan Huff has returned to sessions and producing works in Nashville, and besides working with big artists including Shania Twain and Michael W. Smith. Suddenly in late 2001, we have again faced the band "Giant" with this reunion album "III", the high-tension melodic rock album. At last but not least, it should be noted that Japanese version includes 4 bonus live performance tracks. Sayit / Again
Tommy Denander, Swedish guitarist/ songwriter aggressively worked on several projects at the same time in early 2000’s. The SAYIT’s second album was one of them and the most melodic and Westcoast-vein. This album featured a real human drummer instead of programming, which made all the tunes alive. You may be surprised to listen to the last tune "Never Gonna Let You Go". Yes, this is the cover originally performed by David Roberts on his legendary solo album "All Dressed Up"(1982). Release: 10 October, 2001 Label: AOR Heaven,Germany (4-018996-101881) Tracks: 1. Dawn 2. Love You Tonight 3. Frozen 4. I Can't Go On 5. Halfway To Heaven 6. Don't Cry 7. When I Think About You 8. Radioactive / Ceremony Of Innocence
Radioactive, the Swedish guitarist Tommy Denander's main project for the last 10 years became in shape with the album release "Ceremony of Innocence" in March, 2001. European leading melodic rock label, MTM released one of the long awaited melodic rock albums, "On My Own" featuring Fergie Frederiksen from Toto on lead vocal was released on the new MTM compilation Volume 5 CD in advance of the album release, which was a PREVIEW one and the final version has real drums plus David Hungate (Toto) on bass. And another TOTO vocalist, Bobby Kimball is also on lead vocals for "Crime Of Passion" and "When You're In Love" written by him with Tommy. Fee Waybill, Jason Scheff and an amazing set of guest musicians are participating in this project. Don't miss the amazing RADIOACTIVE album. Japanese version includes a bonus track "Remember My Conscious". One more thing I would like to say here..... I dare to point out that there is one error on Japanese version liner-notes caused by the writer's lack of knowledge. On the liner notes, the writer says " 'Haunt Me Tonight' is the ballads penned by Richard Marx, Bruce Gaitsch and Fee Waybill, which seems to be an unreleased tune for Fee Waybill's solo album 'Don't Be Scared By These Hands'. " This is clearly wrong! This beautiful ballads is recorded by Bruce Gaitsch featuring Richard Marx on the lead vocal for Bruce's first solo album "A Lyle In A Windstorm" (1995). Moreover, probably the basic track of Radioactive is the common one. Tommy added his electric guitars and solo and Geir Ronning sings instead of Richard Marx lead vocals. Release: 11 July 30, 2001 (Germany), 25 July, 2001 (Japan) Label: MTM, Germany / Marquee/Avalon Records, Japan (MICP-10244) Tracks: 1. The Story Of Love 2. Crimes Of Passion 3. On My Own 4. Grace 5. Prisoner / II
Prisoner is a Tommy Denander's related melodic rock project with his good musical partner Ricky B. Delin. As you may know, Tommy, the Swedish Guitar Dude, has many different projects including his solo activities; Rainmaker, Prisoner and Radioactive. Each project would have different colors / characters. That is to say, Rainmaker is a little bit too heavy for Westcoast / AOR fans, Prisoner seems to be the TOTO vein hard-edge AOR. Therefore, I was guessing that Prisoner II would be a harder one as their 1st album. However, this new Prisoner album is much softer than expected and more TOTO-vein Westcoast sound with some European hard melodic rock touches, I can recommend this album more than their 1st album for Westcoast / AOR fans. I dare to say the problem for this album would be Drum machine sounds and as I always say, Denander should have used real Drums instead in order to be this album more completed one. Denander challenged one interesting track "You Drive Me Crazy" a cover of the Britney Spears tune. Nice try! Release: May, 2001 Label: Z Records, UK (ZR1997044) Tracks: 1. Dead-end 2. Jasmine 3. Grand Illusion / The Book Of How To Make It
Probably, you would remember two AOR Heaven releasing album of Promotion's; "Not for sale" and "Yeah yeah", gained great reviews in AOR-press all over the world. In May 2000, Escape Music signed the band. The first thing the label demanded that the band should get rid of "that stupid name", personally I did not think the name "Promotion" so stupid, rather very unique band name! Thus the boys finally settled for "Grand Illusion". The band explained that a slight change of direction, more emphasis on guitars, (heavy guitars) had done, but the Grand Illusion trademarks, the outstanding vocal work from Peter Sundell and Per Svensson and Anders Rydholm's classy melodies are intact from the Promotion years. Together with Ola Karlsson's witty lyrics and some groovy drumming by Christian Sundell the Grand Illusion sound was created. I agree that Grand Illusion succeded to keep their excellent melodies and outstanding vocal works. However, from my point of view, it is so regrettable that we cannot listen to the great horns on the album, which absolutely made this band very different from other melodic rock bands. Release: Release Date: April 7, 20001 (Europe), March 23, 2001 (Japan) Label: Escape Music, UK (ESM063), Avalon/Marquee, Japan (MICP-10235) Tracks: 1. Feeling Strangely Fine 2. Don't Wait To Know 3. Journey / Arrival
The Journey’s 11th studio album was released in Japan 3 months ahead of worldwide with a substituted song in October 2000. The album was the first full-length studio album with lead vocalist Steve Augeri (ex. Tall Stories) and with Deen Castronovo (ex. Bad English). It was a little surprise for me that this album included not only hard-edge Journey Rock tunes but also typical Journey ballads tunes. Arrival received mixed critical reviews, with some considering the album formulaic, while praising such elements as Neal Schon's guitar playing. The 2001 US edition was released with 2 alternate tracks "World Gone Wild" and "Nothin' Comes Close" and "I'm Not That Way" was dropped. The US CD edition features an edited version of "To Be Alive Again", the full version is only on the Japanese CD. And the artworks was also replaced with the black one ( see the second pohoto). T 'BELL / Replay
“What were they doing until now? T 'Bell, the Swedish new diamonds are now dug out by AOR Heaven.” It was what I I wrote when I reviewed this T’Bell’s album in July 2000. Patrick Tibell, Swedish studio engineer started recording his own materials with Roger Ljunggren, Swedish session guitarist in late 1990’s and the demos were sent to AOR Heaven, Germany. It did not take long to get an album deal with AOR Hevaen. Thus, T’Bell’s album “Replay” was on sale in July 2000 in Europe. Songs on the album were written since the earlier 1980’s inspired by classic rock heroes. When you saw the artworks of the album first time, you must have thought that T ' Bell should play hard edge melodic rock alike the music style of many Swedish / German band who uses a similar type of artworks. It is totally wrong. T ' Bell's music style is more pop and Westcoasty full of harmonies with sophisticated arrangement. I describe that their music style as "Jay Graydon's PLANET 3 meets FOREIGNER". Otherwise, when you listen to "Always Pretending" (Track 5), you may feel that this is "early TOTO meets early BON JOVI". "Life In Disguise" (Track 8) is really the awesome AOR/Westcoast tune with perfect melody, keyboard pattern a little alike Daryl Hall and John Oates' smash hit "Kiss On My List". "Postman" (Track 9) begins with the perfect guitar sounds and killer keyboard rhythm pattern follows. "It's Only Love" (Track 12) is a surprising perfect AOR/Westcoast ballads tune, which reminds me a little AIRPLAY's masterpiece "After The Love Is Gone" because of the keyboard arrangement. Release: July, 2000 (Germany) / 22 October, 2000 (Japan) Label: AOR Heaven - Point Music Distribution, Germany (10164) / Avalon, Marquee Inc., Japan (MICP-10213) Tracks: 1. Do Ya 2. Le Roux / AOR Live
The Early Years (mid /late 1970's) of Le Roux started with two R&B influenced albums on RCA label. They changed music style into more AOR/Melodic Rock with the album "Up" (1980) and the following "Last Safe Place" (1982). Another remarkable history of this band is the release of the album "So Fired Up" (1983) with Fergie Frederiksen (later joined TOTO). This "AOR Live" CD contains all the classic tracks from above-mentioned three 1980's albums. And three unreleased tracks are included, among of which "Don't Stan In My Way" is featuring Fergie Frederiksen on vocals. The Sound qualities of this valuable live CD are very good, so you can feel the energy of 1980's powerful "LE ROUX". Release: July, 2000 Label: LM Records, USA / LeRoux Music (2000-2) Tracks: 1. “No Compromise" is the never-released album of Adrian Gurvitz recorded in 1983 together with his brother Paul, at Tower Studios Hampsted, North part of London.Gurvitz recorded this album, playing all instruments, changed his direction to a little bit the melodious hard-edge rock aiming popular in the mid 1980's. The material was rejected by his label, expecting more Soft Rock / Westcoast songs. As the result, the tape was shelved, fortunately resurrected and released in 2000 by Japanese label Cool Sound, released under the name "No Compromise".
