Doobie Brothers / Sibling Rivalry
It was 1989 when Doobie Brothers reunited with the new studio recording album "Recycles". I remember we were so excited because Tom Johnston, the original lead vocalist / guitar player could be found as the member of reunited Doobies. To be honest, I am obliged to admit that "Recycles" and following album "Brotherhood" (1991) surely reminded us of the good-old early 1970's Doobie years, but nothing more than that. In 1996, we could confirm that Doobie Brothers were still alive by their live double CDs "Rockin' Down The Highway" featuring Michael McDonald too. And I n 2000, we met the refreshing Doobie Brothers with this studio recording album "Sibling Rivalry". All the songs on this album are never the nostalgic and imitated Doobie tunes. For example "Leave My Heartache Behind" written by Pat Simmons reminds a little of "Black Water" but totally different tunes. Keith Knunden adds the different Doobie atmosphere by his lead vocals on "On Every Corner" and "Gates Of Eden". John McFee lead vocals on "Angeles Of Madness" adds soulful and sophisticated mellow flavor to this album. Furthermore, the different kind of Westcoast feeling are brought to this album by our familiar Westcoast / AOR songwriters such as Michael Ruff , Bill Champlin and Tamara Champlin. Actually "45th Floor" written by Bill Champlin and Tom Johnston is very good Rock'n' Roll which reminds me a little "China Groove" by its guitar riff. Really recommendable new album of 2000! Chicago 26
Many Chicago fans had been really looking forward to having their whole brand-new studio recording album for a long time since their famous 22nd album "Stone Of Sisyphus" became unreleased. On this live album released in 1999, we can listen to 3 new studio recording tracks, "Back To You", "If I Should Ever Lose You" written by Burt Bacharach, and "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" known for Jackie Wilson's 68 version. I believed they could do make their original new studio recording full album only if they would have stopped touring for a while, because Bill Champlin, Jason Scheff and Robert Lamm made really excellent solo albums during 1990's as a matter of fact. However, the reality was very different. We were obliged to wait until 2006 when Chicago XXX was released. Compared to Toto, they were very disappointed in this regard, maybe because of unwillingness of the original band members, I am afraid. And I was also disappointed lack of Chicago's post-1984 songs on this album. Release: 12 October, 1999 Label : Chicago Records, USA (CRD 3026) Tracks: 1. The Ballet 2. Make Me Smile 3. Rick Springfield / Karma
One of the best 1980's pop stars, Rick Springfield released his solo album after 10 years silence in 1998. As you have been aware, Rick Springfield released his project with Tim Pierce (guitar) and Bob Marlette (keyboards) under the name of "Sahara Snow" with MTM Music Germany in 1997 to break his silence since 1988 when his former solo album "Rock Of Life" was released. On the album "Sahara Snow", Springfield succeded to show us that he kept his storng Rock sprits as before. On this solo album, Springfield shown not only such kind of Rock sprits but also his pop sense. Once you listen to this album, I guess you must grin because many essense of 80's hit tunes such as "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" performed by Tears for Fears. On this album, Bob Marlete does not play keyboards but wrote materials with Springfield. One of the remarkable findings must be that Richard Page (ex Pages, ex Mr. Mister) joined on 4 tracks as a background vocalist. Following advanced Japanese release, the album was released also in USA with different track order and it includes an additional track “ His Last Words” as the 1 min 23 seconds opener of the album and also “Karma” remix version as a hidden track. Abraxas Pool
Whilst Neal Schon reunited with Steve Perry, Steve Smith and Ross Valory to record Journey’s tenth studio album “Trial by Fire” in early 1996, the "classic" line-up of Santana band; Gregg Rolie, Michael Carabello, Michael Shrieve and José "Chepito" Areas, with Neal Schon (joined Santana in 1971 when the Santana III was released) got together intending to reproduce the original sound of Santana 30 years later and the result was fabulous Abraxas Pool. That happened because Neal Schon was obliged to wait for Steve Perry whether he wanted to tour or not due to physical issues. Neal Schon released his solo album Electric World in 1997, late forming the Abraxas Pool with former Journey member Gregg Rolie, Since Neal Schon decided to have Steve Augeri with Journey, replacing semi-retired Steve Perry, Abraxas Pool was ended after this album release.
