For the 1998 Festive season, Chicago released 14 Christmas songs as their twenty-fifth album. Toto XX: 1977-1997
Losing Joseph Williams after Seventh One tour ended in July 1988, Toto started to struggle without proper lead vocalist in 1990’s. Toto recorded and released “Kingdom of Desire” in 1991, about which I had to say was in chaos. The worst thing happened.... Jeff Porcaro died in an accident on August 5, 1992, at the age of 38. The 1995 album “Tambu” was much worse one for me, very heavy-metal without elegance, missing Paich and Porcaro sophisticated keyboards, a departure from Toto's sound of the late 1970s and 1980... I reviewed those two albums that should have been called as Steve Lukather's Band’s or The New Los Lobotomys’, rather than Toto’s. Celebrating the band 20th anniversary, David Paich and Steve Lukather went through good-old unreleased materials featuring Bobby Kimball and Joseph Williams, for releasing Toto XXs, in May 1998. The result was superb. Then, the band had a small promotional tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams. After the tour, Bobby Kimball rejoined the band as lead singer after 14 years. Phew, the band was again on the right track since then. Release: 13 May, 1998 (Japan) / 25 May, 1998 (Europe) Label: Sony Music, Japan (SRCS8628) / Columbia Records, Europe (489965 2) Tracks: 1. Goin' Home 2. Tale Of A Man 3. Last Night 4. In A Word 5. Billy Ward / Two Hands Clapping
Billy Ward is a talented NY based drummer who is known for his drum play with Bill Champlin and King Of Hearts for us. This is his drum-oriented solo album featuring many friends including Bill Champlin, Jim Beard and John Patitucci. According to the liner-notes of the album, the album was recorded live in the studio with no rehearsals and no overdubs or repairs. There are many interesting works on this album, some of which you may feel it is a little bit strange and never-experienced style of music. As for me, "Sound Of The Rain" was such one, on which I felt Billy was successful to express the atmosphere of rainfalls by his awesome drum-play and Bill Champlin added his excellent vocal touch. You can find out the different possibility of the drums as an instrument by listening this album. I cannot say this album is a kind of pop album. But if you would really like to discover another possibility of the drum as an instrument, Try to listen to this album. Release: December, 1998 Label: Drumpike, USA (DP1006) Tracks: 1. Ole Boskov / Mr. Romance
Ole Boskov was a singer/songwriter from Denmark. He released his debut album “Listen to the Wind” in 1996 under his own label PM Records and his second album “Mr. Romance” followed in 1998. The album contains 9 brand new songs. Ole, himself explained his music background as follows: "Some of my greatest influences have been artists like: Bruce Hornsby, John Hiatt, Van Morisson, The Band, Eagles, Don Henley, Little Feat, Billy Joel and Elton John. These are the ones that have influenced me the most, but of course there are so many great artists that I have listened to through the years. I have also been very much into listening to Jazz and I am a great fan of players like: Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Oscar Peterson, Michel Camillo and Erroll Garner. I am a very Pop influenced person and I love good pop songs, so my big ambition is to make quality pop that has a broad appeal but which can also be enjoyed by the more esoteric listener. I like to write songs to educate people a little bit, and put in things which I have found to be working for me and then forward this onto others and maybe they will get a win and find something new out themselves." Actually Boskov’s music reminded me of good mid 1970's westcoast music such as early years Eagles, Poco and/or Fools Gold. Although he was not US residents, he had some kind of typical American country rock feeling and further his music seemed to be mixed up with early 80's westcoast sound. In 2011 Ole Boskov died after a long battle with of liver cancer at age 48. Release: November, 1998 Label: Positive Music distributed by Intermusic, Denmark (INTCD075) Tracks: 1. Going Crazy 2. Bruce Gaitsch’s second solo album "Aphasia" shown his wide range of musical talent as a songwriter, a guitarist and a producer. When you listen to this third solo album, you will feel more relaxing atmosphere than his first solo album "Lyle in A Windstorm". I mean this album is more guitar-oriented album than former two albums. You would appreciate that Richard Marx added another touch to the cover version of Richard Page's "Dependence". Various Artists / A Song A Day
Looking back 1998 releases after more than two decades, I wonder if this album was deserved to be said as the best Various Artists project album of the year. The album was well produced by Jimmy Haslip (the original bassist of Yellow Jackets) and Vince Mendoza. I believe that this album was basically the USA re-release of the 1996 WDR Big Band Köln “Summer Olympics Atlanta 1996 - Flame” album (supposed to be released only in Europe then) with different track order and replacing a Vince Mendoza track by then Zebra Records artist Mark Portmann’s “The Last Song” taken from Portmann’s 1997 album “No Truer Words”. All the tracks were very much of high quality and basically not on the artist’s album, therefore this compilation CD was one of the must-have but easily missing to buy CDs. The featured songs are two Chaka Khan’s, two Brenda Russell’s. Gino Vannelli’s self-remake version of “Just a Motion Away” originally performed on his1984 album “Black Cars”, and Al Jarreau’s self-remake “Raging Waters” (the original version was the opening track of Jay Graydon producing 1984 album ‘High Crime” were really impressive. Jeff Larson / Watercolor Sky
When I reviewed this album in 1998 on my original ACMJ web, I wrote as follows: (Quote) Jeff Larson, the young singer/songwriter with acoustic-flavored talents, can write real West Coast melodies in late 1990's. We cannot help feeling good 70's California sound as same as "America" gave us at that time. He released two solo albums "Beggars" and "Upper Story" out on a Holland based label and you can listen to 2 tracks from "Beggars" on "Thoughtscape Sounds '97 Sampler CD 2". And in 1998, he completed his third solo album "Water Color Sky" full of good West Coast tunes. You can find out not only Jeffrey Fosket but also Gerry Beckley of America as producers of this album. Good Acoustic-flavored album this is. (Unquote) Since then, Larson successfully established his firm position in the music industry and as of 2021, continues to create good music. Speaking of this third solo album, the 20th anniversary edition was reissued with two bonus tracks here in Japan in 2018. Release Date: 1 October, 1998 Label: New Surf Limited, USA (NC 98-4803) Tracks: 1. Nothing But Far 2. Annabelle 3. Definite Blonde 4. Shades 5. Song For Renee 6. Coast 7. Another Highway Song 8.
