Kelly Willard / Willing Heart
It was sixteen years old when Florida native Kelly Willard moved to Nashville. She came across Harlan Rogers who encouraged her and taught her, actually having to talk he into singing solos and then joined Harlan Rogers & Friends, and toured until 1977, when she moved to Southern California. There, Willard played keyboards and sung background vocals on projects for such artists including Tommy Coomes and Roby Duke before Maranatha! Music approached her to record her own solo project. In 1979, Willard released her first solo album “Blame It On The One I Love”. Her second solo album “Willing Heart” followed in 1981. Willard sang all the tunes with her beautiful female voice. She wrote all songs by herself except "Comfortable With You", " Faithful Love" and "Hold On" with Hadley Hockensmith, "A Million Ways" with Pita Delamater and "Only You" with Bruce Hibbard. Toby Beau / If You Believe
In the summer of 1978, the band Toby Beau released their debut album "Toby Beau" featuring a smash hit single "My Angel Baby". In 1979, Toby Beau completed their 2nd album " More Than A Love Song" under the pressure how they should have another smash hit. However, the band members except Balde Silva left the band without doing any tour for the album. Thus, Balde Silva decided to record third album by himself as Toby Beau. In this way, this album "If You Believe" had been completed and released in 1980. Due to his songwriting partner absence, Jerry Fuller, the producer of this album gathered great tunes over the America, which made Toby Beau's sound from country-flavored rock into Westcoast Pop / AOR. John Valenti / I Won't Change
Chicago-born John LiVigni (aka John Valenti) started to play drums and sings with Larry Klimas at clubs in Chicago and Detroit as "The Outfit", when he was a teen-ager. They scudded to be signed with Motown and released 2 albums under the name of "Puzzle" in early 70's. In 1976, John Valenti released his first solo album "Anything You Want" featuring Jay Graydon, Dean Parks and Ed Greene under Ariola Records. On this album, John penned 7 songs out of 11, which were really good mellow-blue-eyed-soul tunes. In 1980, John embarked his second solo album for R with October 1980 USA release schedule. However, after all this second album "I Won't Change" never released in the States but released only in Japan in November 1981. As regards "I Won't Change", you must feel typical early 80's Westcoast Pop atmosphere than blue-eyed flavor. China
China was one of the not-famous but good Canadian AOR/Westcoast band with typical Jay Graydon's harmonized guitar sounds but not done by Jay himself. Let me allow to introduce the band members' career for your information based on Toshikazu Kanazawa's liner notes for this CD. (Thank you in advance for Toshikazu Kanazawa! Without your guidance, I cannot say any information about the background of the members.) Chris Kearney released 3 solo albums categorized as Canadian Swamp in early 70's under Capitol Records, Canada; "Christopher Kearney" (1972), "Pemmican Stash"(1973) and "Sweetwater" (1974). Danny McBride participated in the musical "Jesus Christ, Super Star" and released his solo album "Morningside" recorded in London. At last but least, Bill King, the only American nationality released 2 solo albums including "Goodbye Superdad" (1973) under Capitol Records, Canada. Bill also participated in the musical "Jesus Christ, Super Star" and met Danny there... Byrne & Barnes / An Eye For Eye
The acclaimed Robert Byrne's first solo album "Blame It On The Night" original vinyl was deleted from Mercury Records USA Catalogue only several months after its release in 1979 whilst was released in September 1980 in Japan. In spite of the rapid deletion of his first album, Robert Byrne started recording session for his second album. In December 1981, Tokuma Musical Industries, Japan released "An Eye For An Eye" under the name of the duo unit "Byrne & Barnes". All the tunes on this album are really fashionable and sophisticated pop tunes. After Byrnes & Barnes project, we could find Robert Byrne producing works like Pointer Sisters and/or Patti Austin and his songwriting works for Pop Country singers such as Ronnie Milsap. Brandon Barnes is also known for his producing and songwriting works with Brian McKnight. Robert Bellarmine Byrne, born on 10 July, 1954, RIP 27 June, 2005, wrote many chart topping hits for major artists including the number one singles "How Do I Turn You On" by Ronnie Milsap (1986), after working at legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in the 1970’s. Michael Brandon Barnes, native of Gadsden, Alabama, wrote many songs for Brian McKnight, Anne Murray, Crystal Gayle, Ronnie Milsap, Boys II Men, Philip Bailey, Phil Collins, Stephen Bishop and Earth, Wind & Fire. In 2001, the album was reissued on CD first time and we were very surprised because two unreleased materials "That's The Way She Goes" and "Who's That Look In Your Eye" were added. Those two songs were originally prepared for this album and the master tape of those materials was lost due to the fire of the studio. The original artworks could not be used for the 2001 reissued CD because the designer of the artwork could not be found and thus Dreamsville had to give up using the original artworks then. We had to wait until 2011 to have the reissued CD with original artworks. Keane
Needless to say, I am not talking about UK alternative band Keane that appeared early 2000’s. Keane is the band of genius Keane brothers from Los Angeles, Tom Patrick Keane (born on 13 March, 1964) and John Morgan Keane (born on 26 April, 1965). As "The Keane Brothers", they released their self-titled first album for 20th century Records in 1977 produced by David Foster and supported by first call L.A. musicians including Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, Harvey Mason, Lee Sklar, Larry Carlton, Bill Champlin and mot name a few. In 1979, their second album "Taking Off" produced by Lamont Dozier , David Paich and David Foster, followed. Two years later, Keane brothers finished their third album "Keane" under the name of the band "Keane", which was sold about 40,000 copies in Japan and in those days called as "Little Toto" or "Young Toto" for the sound of them. This is the album shown here. The brothers were just 16 and 17 years old then. The opener “Tryin' To Kill A Saturday Night” under the name of Keane Brithers” rather than the band ‘Keane” was featured on the soundtrack of the US comedy movie “Zapped!” (1982) with David Pomeranz “Got to Believe in Magic”, “King & Queen Of Hearts” and Gregg Mathieson Project “Bomp Me”. Pages (1981)
The third and final Pages’ album must be the best masterpiece album of early 1980’s. After releasing two albums produced by Bobby Colomby for Epic Records, they switched to Capitol Records since both albums were not successful enough in terms of sales, that is to say, the single from “Future Street” the second album, “I Do Believe In You” peaked number 84 on Billboard Hot 100 in December 1979. Richard Page and Steve George had Jay Graydon to produce the third album, that was again self-titled and released in 1981. Two singles were released from the album, "You Need a Hero" and "Come on Home", which were the only tracks produced by Bobby Colomby on the album. Although the album was produced in perfect shape by Jay Graydon with acclaimed musicians including Jeff Porcaro on drums, the album failed to chart. True music lovers admit that Pages completed their own marvelous music style with Jay Graydon, but the two had to wait for several years when they released "Welcome To The Real World" in 1986 as Mr. Mister. Release: 1981 Label: Capitol Records, USA (ST-12123) First Reissued CD Release: 27 September 1989 (EMI Music, Japan, CP21-6061) Tracks: 1. You Need A Hero 2. Tell Me 3. O.C.O.E. Bob & Pauline Wilson / Somebody Loves You
Bob Wilson and Pauline Wilson, the core member of "Seawind" released their own album after releasing Seawind 4th album "Seawind" in 1980, which became the last album of the group. Therefore, many of us misunderstood that this Bob & Pauline Wilson's album was done after Seawind disbanded. You should note that Seawind started to record their uncompleted 5th album in 1981 after release of this Bob & Pauline Wilson's album. You can confirm that Seawind really did recording by listening to 5 materials from the uncompleted 5th album later included on the compilation album "Remember" released under Noteworthy in 1995. You can easily found that this Bob & Pauline Wilson album would be CCM one by seeing the original label name, i.e. "Myrth". All the Seawind members including Jerry Hey participated in the recording of this Wilsons' album and thus the sound and music style of this album should be Seawind-like. And you may feel the musical roots of Bob Wilson's project with Tommy Funderburk "The Front" (1984) when you listen to the straight rock tune "You Can't Hide". John O'Banion
Indiana born John O’Banion got the lead singer position of the band Today's Children led by Doc Severinsen well-known for his musical contribution to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In 1974, O’Banion released his debut single “Me And America” c/w “I Wanna Go Home” on New York based Bell Records, followed by another single (promo only release?) “When Jeremiah Can Be”. It was 1978 when O’Banion recorded a single “Something About Your Love” c/w “Greener Pastures” written by Joey Carbone and Richie Zito for Warner Bros. Having said that, O’Banion had to wait for further several years. He released another single on Arista in 1980 produced by Carbone & Zito; “Ocean Of Love” written by Richie Zito “Don't Throw Our Love Away” written by Joey Carbone and Teri Desario. England born Robbie Patton started to co-write songs with Kerry Chater in Los Angeles around 1975 and got a position of the staff writer for Elton John’s Rocket Records/Publishing Company.
