Dick St. Nicklaus / Sweet And Dandy
It was 1979 that Dick St. Nicklaus's first album "Magic" was a kind of boom in Osaka, the second largest city of Japan located in western part of Japan, near Kyoto. Osaka has a diffent atmosphere and their own cluture and in those days thet were keen to find out some unfamiliar artists by themselves. One was Dick St. Nicklaus. Sony Music Osaka branch A&R decided to release "Magic" limited in Kansai (western part of Japan surrounding Osaka) and this trial was succeded. The album sold well and thus "Magic" was released all over Japan. Dick St. Nicklaus got a deal for his 2nd album "Sweet And Dandy" with Sony Music Japan. This album is opened by the catchy tune "Bye Bye Baby" clearly inspired by the keyboard rhythm pattern used by Doobie Borthers on their smash hit "What A Fool Believes". The beautiful ballads tune "Love, Love, Love" was covered by Bill Medley on his 1981 album "Liberty" later. Perry & Sanlin / For Those Who Love
I believe you are familiar with Phil Perry, who performs good many smooth jazz vocal session works with David Foster, David Garfield and many others on various albums and releases his own solo albums "The Heart Of A Man" (1991), "Pure Pleasure" (1994), "One Heart, One Woman" (1998) and "My Book Of Love" (2000). Phil Perry started his musical journey with Kevin Sanlin in late 60's as Montclairs, who released several singles; "Hey You" (1969), "All I Really Care About Is You" (1971) and "Dreaming Out Of The Season" (1972) and also released an album in 1973. In late 70's, Phill and Richard moved to Los Angeles and did many background vocal sessions while seeking for the deal. In 1980, they got a chance to release an album "For Those Who Love" under Capitol as a duo, Perry & Sanlin. Their first single "Just To Make You Happy" stalled at number 81. In 1981, second album "We're The Winner" followed, but they became "the winner" commercially. Tavares / Supercharged
The five-brother R&B singing group Tavares are Arthur Tavares, Ralph Vierra Tavares, Perry Lee Tavares, Antone Tavares, and Feliciano Tavares who are nicknamed "Pooch," "Tiny," "Chubby," and "Butch" may be much more familiar. In 1974, their debut album "Check It Out" was issued with Capitol Records. In the summer of 1974, their second album "Hard Core Poetry" followed with the first hit version (number one R&B) of "She's Gone" written by the then relative unknown duo of Darryl Hall and John Oates. In 1975, third album "In the City" produced by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter scored number 26 on pop chart in addition to # 8 on R&B chart. After they released acclaimed R&B album "Sky High" in 1976 and "Love Storm" in 1977, "More Than A Woman" specifically written for them by Bee Gees was issued as a single from the soundtrack album "Saturday Night Fever". "More Than a Woman" was also on their 6th album "Future Bound" in 1978, and was followed by the 1979 album "Madame Butterfly" produced by well-known Philly Soul arranger/producer Bobby Martin. By reading the above biography, you may wonder why I recommend "Supercharged" album here so much... On this album "Supercharged", Tavares embarked new voyage with our musicians including David Foster, Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin. The opener "Bad Times" reached number 47 on pop chart and "We Both Tried" followed, that was written by David Foster and Bill Champlin and well-known for Bill Champlin's version on his album "Single" (1978). Another cover of the song from Bill Champlin 's album "Single" is "I Don't Want You Anymore", also written by David Foster and Bill Champlin. Peter Allen / Bi-coastal
Peter Allen, born and raised in Sydney, Australia, started his successful musical career with Chirs Bell as a duo "the Allen Brothers" on the television in early 1960's. In 1964, Judy Garland was impressed by their performance and brought them to London as her opening act. Allen engaged her daughter Liza Minnelli and thus Allen moved to New York. After a lengthy engagement, Allen and Minnelli married on 3 March, 1967. After the Allen Brothers broke up in the spring of 1970, Allen started as a solo act and wrote songs for the Off-Off-Broadway. In 1974, Allen wrote "I Honestly Love You", a sad ballad recorded by Olivia Newton-John and became number 1 hit. Thus, Allen was signed to A&M Records, releasing his third album "Continental American". In the fall of 1978, Melissa Manchester scored Top 10 hit with another of Peter's ballads, "Don't Cry Out Loud". His self-peformance version of this song was featured on his 4th album "I Could Have Been a Sailor". His fifth album "Bi-Coastal" followed at the end of 1980. This album was exceptional masterpiece for us because of David Foster's marvelous producing works featuring great musicians including the genius Jay Graydon and perfect harmony vocal works done by Richard Page and Steve George.Unfortunately Peter Allen died of complications from AIDS in 1992. Far Cry / The More Things Change...
It was July 1973 when Phil Galdston, a songwriter born in New York in September 1950, met Peter Thom coming from Montreal, Canada, who had already released his solo album "Peter Thom" in 1972 under United Artists. Those two talented musicians started songwriting collaboration and made demos for label shopping. "Why Don't We Live Together" performed by Barry Manillow in 1975 was successful enough to get an album deal. They completed their album "American Gypsies" produced by John Simon as the duo Galdston & Thom in 1977. However, this album did not sell well in spite of good reviews among true music lovers. They seemed to consider how they should do for much more highly acclaimed review and good sales. As Far Cry, Phil Galdston and Peter Thom succeeded to complete the perfect album "The More Things", the Steely Dan's "Aja" vein album by getting Elliot Scheiner known for his works with Steely Dan and also Donald Fagen himself on the backing vocals. True masterpiece album I admit. Release: April, 1980 Label: Columbia Records, USA (NJC-36286) First Reissued CD Release:20 June, 2001 (Sony Music Entertainment, Japan, SRCS-9840) Tracks 1. Player / Room With A View
After the release of their second album "Danger Zone" (1978) and US tour, a founder of the group and the co-writer of their debut hit "Baby Come Back" singer / guitarist,, left the band due to the difference of musical direction from Peter Beckett. Whilst Crowley started as a songwriter signing with RCA Record and wrote “I Want You I Need You” and other six songs with Chris Christian for 1981 Chris Christian’s self-titled album on Boardwalk, Beckett successfully signed with Casablanca Records to release the third album of the band Player since RSO Records folded. With two guest musicians; Miles Joseph (vocals, guitar) and Gabriel Katona (keyboards, ex-Rare Earth), Beckett, Moss and Friesen went in the studio for the third album, Room With a View" produced by Peter Beckett with Tony Peluso, that was very similar in style to "Danger Zone". Although the album had Beckett's good ballads "It's For You" and "Givin' It All", the band failed in terms of sales. By the end of the tour Ron Moss left the band becoming an actor in the TV series "The Bold and the beautiful". James Felix / White As Snow
James Felix was born on 14 July, 1951 in San Bernardino, California USA. Felix started his professional music career as the member of CCM group named "Psalm 150" which Bob Carlile had belonged in early 1970’s. During mid / late 1970's, Felix performed and participated as a bass player and/or a vocalist in the recording sessions of Andrae Crouch's several albums such as "This Is Another Day" (1976), "Live In London"(1978) and "I'll Be Thinking Of You" (1979) released on Light Records USA. These works brought James the chance to release his own solo album under the label. Thus, "White As Snow" was completed with excellent musicians in the CCM field of those days such as Hadey Hockensmith and Bill Maxwell and young Louis Pardini (aka Lou Pardini). In 1990’s his name could be found as a songwriter on Bryan Duncan's albums. This James Felix's album is one of the very good early 1980's CCM album as well as Roby Duke's albums. Archie James Cavanaugh / Black and White Raven
Archie James Cavanaugh was born in Wrangell and raised in Kake, Alaska, small town of 600 people, a predominantly Tlingit community located on Kupreanoff Island in Southeast Alaska. The album “Black and White Raven” project, his dream of one day recording music that Cavanaugh had written, was materialised locally. Cavanaugh started to auditione musicians to record the album, Pete DePoe (drummer) was the first guy Cavanaugh secured. Then, DePoe suggested that Tony Bellamy (guitarist), his former band mate in Los Angeles might be interested in playing lead guitar on the album, thus Bellamy accepted. Two guys came across Kenny Day (keyboard player), and Day brought his fellow bassist Tag Henning from Puyallup, Washington. Eventually they began to lay tracks at the studios and visited Pacific West Recorders in Redmond, Washington to record there. The album took a year-and-a-half to finish recording. Finally in the spring of 1980, the album “Black and White Raven” was self- released as the physical form of his dreams. The album had been one of the hidden treasures among AOR / Rare Groove / Blue-eyed Soul maniacs. Surprisingly, Vivid Sound Japan succeeded to reissue this rare materials on CD format in the summer of 2000. As you see the musicians credit, you will not be able to find out any familiar names listed on many other early 1980's AOR / Westcoast albums. However, you will be satisfied with the album once when you will start to listen. I feel that his voice and music style is a little bit alike mid 1970's Boz Scaggs. Particularly, "It's Our Love" (Track 4) remind me Boz Scaggs' smash hit tune " Low Down". In the years after the album release, Cavanaugh continued to record and play, releasing an album of love songs co-written by his wife Melinda, and a record of Tlingit-speaking jazz inspired by a return to his hometown Kake, a village in southeast Alaska. Cavanaugh passed away at the age of 67 in 2018. Release: Spring, 1980 Label: Black & White Raven, Inc. - A&M Cavanaugh, USA (BWR-LP-001) First Reissued CD Release: 15 August, 2000 (Vivid Sound Corp.
