Alan Sorrenti / Figli Delle Stelle
The Alan Sorrenti most commercially successful album “Figli Delle Stelle” was released in 1977. The single “Figli Delle Stelle” became smash hit in Italy and is still played on the radio and in clubs. Sorrenti was in Los Angeles and had opportunities to collaborate top musicians including Jay Graydon, who then produced the record, David Hungate from Toto on bass and on keyboards David Foster. Once Sorrenti returned to Italy, he continued the album recording, intending to adopt the same style. This is one of the most successful albums by the Italian artist, with over a million copies sold in Italy alone, and marks a turning point in his musical career which, from the progressive rock that had characterized his previous works, approaches disco music. Fools Gold / Mr. Lukcy
Fools Gold is the late 1970's rock group of Danny Henson, and Tom Kelly known as one of talented song writers who composed Madonna's "Like A Virgin", Cyndy Lauper's "True Colors" and Whitney Houston's "So Emotional" with Billy Steinberg. Fools Gold was formed as the backing up band for Dan Fogelberg. The band members were Tom Kelly (vocals, Bass), Denny Henson (guitar, vocals), Ron Grinel (drums) and Doug Livingston (keyboards, vocals) when their first album was released in 1976. Danny Henson explained why Fools Gold had became duo comprising Tom and Danny when their 2nd album "Mr. Lucky" was released. He said that the second album was originally intended to be released with Arista Records and Keith Olsen, the producer gathered not a few talented studio musicians such as David Foster, David Paich, Bill Champlin, Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro and Waddy Wachtel as listed. That caused over budget problems and Arista Records denied to release this over-budget album. Thus, CBS offered to buy master tape of the album and released "Mr. Lucky" in 1977. The Keane Brothers
I believe you have several unforgettable genius brothers names; one should be "Porcaro" (Jeffrey, Steve, Mike). Someone may say "Williams" (Joseph and Mark T.). "Keane" should be another one. Tom Patrick Keane (born on March 13, 1964) and John Morgan Keane (born on April 26,1965) grew up in Los Angeles. To our surprise, the Keane brothers got a deal with 20th Century Records when they were only 11/12 years old. And this is the very first album of The Keane Brothers produced by David Foster. Out of 10 songs on this album, Tom wrote 9 songs, all of which are really great Westcoast pops. Tom's vocal might sound like those done by Hanson in 90's becuase of his age but you may confirm Tom's excellent potential talent as a singer by listening to this album. In 1979, Keane brothers released another album "Taking Off" under abc Records produced by Lamont Dozier (except 2songs done by David Foster and David Paich). Then the brothers kept silent for 2 years and in 1981 they appeared in front of Japanese music lovers with the album "Keane" as the band "Keane" with Mark Moulin (guitars) and Mike Millwood (bass). As you may know, "Today Tomorrow And Tonight" followed in 1982. Release: 1976 Label: 20th Century Records, USA (T-536) First Reissued CD Release: 20 December, 2000 (Mercury - Universal Music, Japan, UICY-3058) Tracks: 1. Help! Help! 2. The Ugly One 3. Lisa Dal Bello
It was 1977 that Lisa Dal Bello, a young Italian/UK-origin female singer coming from Canada, got a chance to release her first solo album supported by TOTO members. On this debut album, she wrote all 10 songs, 3 of which are co-written with David Foster, the producer of this album, and one of which is co-written with Roy Kenner. You should note that she got Juno Awards (Best New Vocalist of the year) by this funky and emotional album. Someone may recall her impressive with Boz Scaggs on "Miss Sun", the demo version of which can be also listened on "TOTO XX" album. For your information, Lisa released 5 more solo albums; "Pretty Girls" (1979), "Drastic Measures" (1981) and so on. Randy Edelman / If Love Is Real
Randy Edelman is well-known for his Hollywood movie scores such as "Twins", "Ghost busters 2", "Kindergarten Cop" and so on. However, you should note that he was a good singer in 70's. It was 1970 when Randy Edelman first album "Randy Edelman" was released. In 1972 "The Laughter And The Tears" followed. His third album "Prime Cuts" (1974) supported by Michael Omartian was a stepping stone of his career. After releasing the 5th album "Fairwell Fairbanks", he signed with Arista established by Clive Davis. It seemed that Randy Edelman was expected to release Las Vegas Dinner Show type Middle of the Road Music like Barry Manillow, the typical successful artist under Arista of those days. This album is full of good old-mid 1970’s pop music. If you would like to enjoy such atmosphere, you should buy. If you would expect Westcoast / AOR vein, this is not for you. Player
Peter Beckett moved to Los Angeles from England to pursue further his music career, then reunited with Steve Kipner, his old bandmate to form Skyband with Lane Caudell. Skyband recorded an album in London and released as self-titled debut album for RCA in 1975 but was not successful enough. In 1977 finally Peter Beckett came across J.C. Crowley when both attended party in Hollywood and they got together and jam, began working on their new material in Crowley's garage, they recorded a single record “Jukebox Saturday Night” under the name of Bandana, c/w “Love Is Where You Find It", later to be re-recorded for Player’s first album. The two were introduced to Ronn Moss. Then Moss brought in his old friend John Friesen. Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter liked their materials and took the guys into the studio to record a few songs. Thus, they got a deal with RSO label. The band also added keyboard player Wayne Cook, former band member of Steppenwolf, Cook was not pictured on the album cover, joining after the publicity photo was taken. The band finally released the lead single "Baby Come Back” that broke on the radio in October of 1977 and their self-titled debut album followed. They first performed live as the opening act for Gino Vanelli November of 1977, then later with Boz Scaggs. “Baby Come Back” reached number 1 on US single chart early January 1978. The second single “This Time I'm in It for Love" also reached number 10. The album peaked number 26 on Billboard 200. Galdston & Thom / American Gypsies
Galdston & Thom is widely known for their later band "Far Cry" that released "The More Things Change" (1980). It was July 1973 when Phil Galdston, a songwriter born in New York, met Peter Thom coming from Montreal, Canada. Then, they started songwriting collaboration and made demos. "Why Don't We Live Together" performed by Barry Manillow in 1975 was successful enough to get a deal as a recording artist. John Simon, the producer of this album, recommended Warner Bros. Records to made a deal with them and thus, this album was done under Warner Bros. This is one of the best mellow sophisticated American pop album released in late 1970's. Waters
I believe that you see the name of Waters as the background singers on not a few albums you have in your collection. As written below, Waters is the family (brothers and sisters) group of Luther, Maxine (Willard), Oren and Julia (Tillman). In 1975, they released their own first album "Waters" under Blue Note, the well-known Jazz label. It was 1977 that their 2nd album, i.e. this album was released under Warner Bros. Records. This album is one of mid 70's producing works by Michael Omartian and Steve Barri, other works done by whom are, for example, Dionne Warwick "Love At First Sight"(1977). You can find common names of musicians, the core members of Rhythm Heritage, i.e. Michael Omartian (Key), Jay Graydon (g), Ray Parker Jr. (g), Scott Edwards (b), Jeff Porcaro (ds), Ed Greene (ds) and Victor Feldman (perc). I believe you can enjoy this great Philly Soul Music with Westcoast spices. "If There's A Way" written and full of guitar riff by Jay Graydon is awesome! Release: 1977 Label: Warner Bros. I would like to express my gratitude to Warner Japan who has reissued those two fine albums on CD. For you ready references, Sanford and Townsend released one more album "Nail Me To The Wall" as Sanford and Townsend Band in 1979 under Warner Bros. Records, USA. Chunky, Novi & Earnie (1977)
The first album of the trio did not sell well. Therefore they lost deal with Reprise Records, Warner Bros. once. However they succeeded to resign with Warner Bros. Records again with their second self-titled album "Chunky, Novi & Earnie" in 1977. I believe you feel that second album is totally different from first one because there are many contemporary pop tunes here and there. However, the second album did not sell well again.
