George & G (George Grunwald) / So Much In Love
"So Much To Say” was initiated by George (Jerzy) Grunwald, a multi-talented musician and arranger who was born in Poland, raised in Sweden and also lived in New York City during his teen years. In the early 80s after having lived in Sweden for some time George decided to move to San Diego, California, where he made his first experiences in the professional music business. One of the key figures became studio contractor Benjamin Barret. Through Benjamin’s connections George had the chance to meet lots of the top session players of the L.A. music scene and to be present in the studio when they recorded multi-million selling albums like Lionel Richie’s “Can’t Slow Down” (1983). It was also the time when George perfected his musical skills and his musical taste was defined. Among his favourites were artists like The Eagles, Toto, Journey and Christopher Cross. After some time in the States George moved back to Sweden, where he is still based today. During the 90s he mainly worked as an arranger, song writer and session player for other artists and he met musicians that became friends and would later take part in the recording sessions for “So Much To Say”, like producer / guitarist Håkan Mjörnheim and saxophone player Eric Marienthal. “So Much To Say” was written over a longer period of time and the basic tracks were recorded with a great cast of talented musicians in various studios in Denmark, Sweden and Poland, before the background vocals were arranged and recorded in Bill Champlin’s studio in Los Angeles. Perfectly arranged and sung background vocals have always been an important part of the Westcoast sound, so the choice to involve some of the best vocalists of the L.A. studio scene at the time was an obvious one. The amazing combination of Bill Champlin, Jason Scheff, Joseph Williams, Lou Pardini, Warren Wiebe and Alex Ligertwood on one album can hardly be found lately. More high profile contributions on several songs come from David Garfield on keyboards and Eric Marienthal on saxophone. A ten track version of the album was first released in 2006 in South East Asian territories. Then, Japanese version featuring 2 bonus tracks followed in 2007. The first pressing of 2011 German version includes the same 2 bonus tracks as Japanese version. The German release comes as a limited Special Edition in a jewel case with an individually numbered additional slipcase and an extensive booklet including lyrics and individual musicians credits for every album track. Another true gem for all AOR and Westcoast fans and music collectors. Archie James Cavanaugh / Black and White Raven
Archie James Cavanaugh was born in Wrangell and raised in Kake, Alaska, small town of 600 people, a predominantly Tlingit community located on Kupreanoff Island in Southeast Alaska. The album “Black and White Raven” project, his dream of one day recording music that Cavanaugh had written, was materialised locally. Cavanaugh started to auditione musicians to record the album, Pete DePoe (drummer) was the first guy Cavanaugh secured. Then, DePoe suggested that Tony Bellamy (guitarist), his former band mate in Los Angeles might be interested in playing lead guitar on the album, thus Bellamy accepted. Two guys came across Kenny Day (keyboard player), and Day brought his fellow bassist Tag Henning from Puyallup, Washington. Eventually they began to lay tracks at the studios and visited Pacific West Recorders in Redmond, Washington to record there. The album took a year-and-a-half to finish recording. Finally in the spring of 1980, the album “Black and White Raven” was self- released as the physical form of his dreams. The album had been one of the hidden treasures among AOR / Rare Groove / Blue-eyed Soul maniacs. Surprisingly, Vivid Sound Japan succeeded to reissue this rare materials on CD format in the summer of 2000. As you see the musicians credit, you will not be able to find out any familiar names listed on many other early 1980's AOR / Westcoast albums. However, you will be satisfied with the album once when you will start to listen. I feel that his voice and music style is a little bit alike mid 1970's Boz Scaggs. Particularly, "It's Our Love" (Track 4) remind me Boz Scaggs' smash hit tune " Low Down". In the years after the album release, Cavanaugh continued to record and play, releasing an album of love songs co-written by his wife Melinda, and a record of Tlingit-speaking jazz inspired by a return to his hometown Kake, a village in southeast Alaska. Cavanaugh passed away at the age of 67 in 2018. Release: Spring, 1980 Label: Black & White Raven, Inc. - A&M Cavanaugh, USA (BWR-LP-001) First Reissued CD Release: 15 August, 2000 (Vivid Sound Corp. John O'Banion
Indiana born John O’Banion got the lead singer position of the band Today's Children led by Doc Severinsen well-known for his musical contribution to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In 1974, O’Banion released his debut single “Me And America” c/w “I Wanna Go Home” on New York based Bell Records, followed by another single (promo only release?) “When Jeremiah Can Be”. Unfortunately Bell Records was shut down in late in 1974, and its assets were transferred to Columbia's new label, Arista Records. The next single of O’Banion became the key for his early 1980’s success. It was 1978 when O’Banion recorded a single “Something About Your Love” c/w “Greener Pastures” written by Joey Carbone and Richie Zito for Warner Bros. Having said that, O’Banion had to wait for further several years. He released another single on Arista in 1980 produced by Carbone & Zito; “Ocean Of Love” written by Richie Zito “Don't Throw Our Love Away” written by Joey Carbone and Teri Desario. Finally, John O'Banion debut album was released in 1981 with Elektra, produced by Joey Carbone and Richie Zito, "Love You Like I Never Found" reached number 24 on US single chart. John O'Banion / Danger
It is a little complicated for me to review "Danger" because this album is his third album here in Japan but his second album in USA. After big success of his debut album with "Love You Like I Never Loved Before" both in Japan and in USA, John O'Banion performed live in Japan and he won the grand prix at Tokyo Music Festival with his new song "I Don't Want To Lose Your Love" in the spring of 1982, which made him more popular in Japan. Wea Japan would strongly hope that they should release John O'Banion's new album as soon as possible. Thus, the album "Close Up" comprising of 7 new studio recording tracks later included on his US second album "Danger" plus 3 live tracks "Thru The Eyes Of Love", "Standing On The Edge" and "Caught" recorded in Japan in April 1982. And several months later, we had his full studio recording album "Danger". It is my impression that this album has been very popular especially in Europe more than in Japan and in USA. In February 2011 when the album was re-reissued, all the tracks only on “Close Up” were added as bonus tracks, thus the complete “Danger “ edition became available. Release: 1982 Label: Elektra Records, USA (9 60173-1) First Reissued CD Release: 21 June, 2000 (EastWest, Japan, AMCY-6141) Tracks: 1. Danger 2. She Doesn't Mean A Thing To Me 3. Steve Eaton
Steve Eaton was the core member of the early 70's legendary group "Fat Chance" known for another core member Bill LaBounty. Steve Eaton released his first solo folky album "Hey Mr. Dreamer" in 1974 under Capitol Records, USA, featuring the original version of "All You Get Love Is A Love Song" well-konwn by Carpenter's version. This self-titled second solo album was released in 1979 under the minor label named "Mountain Bluebird", which made us to be aware of the release of this great album. On this album, Steve Eaton changed his music style into more sophisticated and having a little blue-eyed soul flavor. The atmosphere of the music on this album reminds me Marc Jordan's "Mannequin" and/or "Blue Desert". Release: 1979 Label: Mountain Bluebird Records, USA (SE 46753) Tracks: 1. Got Me Moanin' 2. David Pomeranz / Born For You
David Pomeranz is well-known for his songwriting the number 1 hits "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" and "The Old Songs" recorded by Barry Manilow and/or "Fire Down Below" performed by BonJovi's Richie Sambora, which was featured in Steven Seagal's movie "Long Way Around" Seagal's 1997 Warner Bros. movie. At the same time David was highly acclaimed as a singer in early 1970's with his MCA albums "New Blues"(1971), and "Time To Fly" featuring jazz greats Chick Corea, Billy Cobham, Airto and Eddie Gomez. In the late 70's, David released another album, "It's In Every One Of Us". And "The Truth Of Us" (1981) was one of the popular AOR / Westcoast albums in those days here in Japan, mainly because his self-performance version of "The Old Song" was featured in the soundtracks of the trendy Japanese movie titled "Nantonaku Crystal". "Born For You", this album David recorded for MCA Universal Records Philippines, features 14 love songs including re-recordings of his classics: "The Old Songs" and "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again', as well as 8 new songs. The album "Born For You" was sold more than 280,000 copies in Philippine. Thus David Pomeranz restarted to release his beautiful music since 1999 in South East Asian region. Last but not least, as regards this album "Born For You", Singapore edition followed in 2000 with a bonus track "Singapore Girl". Now Japanese edition is also released with a bonus track "Tokyo Girl" which is the same tune with different lyrics as "Singapore Girl" with LP-style Paper Sleeve jacket. David Lasley / Missin Twenty Grand
Michigan born David Lasley started his music career in his teens, forming a singing group The Utopia, with his younger sister in the Detroit area. In 1970 he joined the cast of the hit musical Hair, which led to a move to New York City, and appeared in the Broadway musical Dude. Subsequently, Lasley started his career as a background vocalist for Luther Vandross, Sister Sledge, Chic and many others. He also formed his own group "Rosie", releasing the album "Better Late Than Never" in 1976 and another album "Last Dance" in 1977. In 1977, Lasley began touring and recording with James Taylor. When you listen to David Lasley's falsetto vocals and his songwritings heavily influenced by black music, you might not think he is a blue-eyed soul singer songwriter. David moved to Los Angeles and wrote many Westcoast hit tunes such as "Jojo" performed by Boz Scaggs and this gave him a chance to get a deal as a solo artist. In 1982, David finally released his own first solo album "Missin' Twenty Grand" along with the hit song "If I Had My Wish Tonight" written by Randy Goodrum and David Loggins ranked number 36 on Billboard's Hot 100. Michael Johnson was recognised widely when he started to sing with John Denver and David Boise as Denver, Boise & Johnson in 1968. Shortly after the group disbanded in 1969, Johnson started his successful solo career. In 1971, Johnson signed with Atco Records to release his first album “There Is A Breeze”, which was released in 1973, then Johnson released two albums for Sanskrit Records; theself-produced second album For All You Mad Musicians” in 1975, followed by “Ain't Dis Da Life” in 1977. In terms of commercial sales, these first three albums were not successful. Time had come in 1978. Chris Montan / Any Minute Now
Generally speaking, Chris Montan is known as the President of Walt Disney Music overseeing wide variety of Disney projects; Disney films, worldwide Disney Theme Parks / Resorts, such as his work on soundtracks “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Pretty Woman,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King”, “Frozen” and name a few. Looking back his early career, Montan should be also recognised as one of good songwriters for acclaimed artists including Jennifer Warnes and Laura Branigan. Montan wrote "All Night With Me" for Laura Branigan in 1982 as the lead single from her debut album Branigan. However, Montan did release his one and only solo album “Any Minute Now” in 1980, before his association with Disney from 1984. And the above-mentioned Laura Branigan’s debut single song “ All Night With Me" was self-performed earlier on this solo album. Since Montan was a member of Karla Bonoff band in 1977, Karla Bonoff contributed as a background singer on this album. Tony Sciuto / Island Nights
It may be hard to imagine for non-Japanese that Tony Sciuto was one of the most successful AOR artists selling an album in Japan at the opening year of 1980's and that on the FM radio, Japanese boys and girls could listen to his smash hit "Island Nights" many times every day. After selling quite a large number of "Island Nights" vinyl copies here in Japan, Tony did Japanese tour which was very successful too. Unfortunately, Tony's "Island Nights" did not sell well in USA. As the result, his second album "Be My Radio" which was ready to go, were never released then. In July 1999, Tony Sciuto self-reissued the album "Island Nights" as the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition CD with 4 bonus tracks; 2 live recordings and 2 unreleased tunes. However, the quality of the master was not good enough. Roby Duke / Not The Same
Roby Duke was one of the most popular Contemporary Christian Music singer among Japanese who liked AOR music in early 1980's. His voice was so soft and his melodies were very friendly to us. Unfortunately Roby Duke died of a massive heart attack on 26 December, 2007 at age of 51 years old at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. This album is his solo debut album originally released under MCA / Songbird, USA, which was established as the Contemporary Christian Music label distributed by MCA. After closing Songbird, Roby continued to release 4 albums("Come Let Us The Reason"(1984), "Blue Eyed Soul"(1986), "Down To Business"(1989) and "Bridge Divine"(1994) ) with Good News Records, USA. Among his albums, this first album "Not The Same" and second album "Come Let Us The Reason" (1984) featuring Richard Page, Steve George and other talented musicians are said to be masterpiece albums beyond decades. In early 1980’s here in Japan, many AOR albums were released with different artworks from the viewpoint of commercial sales, Roby Duke’s first album was one of them as you see the second photo. However, even in USA such thing happened when the album was re-released on CD in 1992 by Ocean Records (please see the third photo). The 1992 Ocean Records edition had different track listing; that is to say, the 1992 CD includes "You Love Me" (duet with Kelly Willard recorded in around 1983 produced by Tommy Coomes for Maranatha The Wedding Album, instead of "Feel It Comin'". In 1999, Vivid Sound, Japan finally reissued its original vinyl version on CD first time in the world. Release: 1982 Label : MCA Songbird Records, USA (MCA-5259) Tracks: 1. Love Is Here To Say 2. Jeff Larson / Watercolor Sky
When I reviewed this album in 1998 on my original ACMJ web, I wrote as follows: (Quote) Jeff Larson, the young singer/songwriter with acoustic-flavored talents, can write real West Coast melodies in late 1990's. We cannot help feeling good 70's California sound as same as "America" gave us at that time. He released two solo albums "Beggars" and "Upper Story" out on a Holland based label and you can listen to 2 tracks from "Beggars" on "Thoughtscape Sounds '97 Sampler CD 2". And in 1998, he completed his third solo album "Water Color Sky" full of good West Coast tunes. You can find out not only Jeffrey Fosket but also Gerry Beckley of America as producers of this album. Good Acoustic-flavored album this is. (Unquote) Since then, Larson successfully established his firm position in the music industry and as of 2021, continues to create good music. Speaking of this third solo album, the 20th anniversary edition was reissued with two bonus tracks here in Japan in 2018. Release Date: 1 October, 1998 Label: New Surf Limited, USA (NC 98-4803) Tracks: 1. Nothing But Far 2. Annabelle 3. Definite Blonde 4. Shades 5. Song For Renee 6. Coast 7. Another Highway Song 8. Stylus / Part Of It All
Stylus was a Australian funk/soul band that released four albums and a number of singles 1975-1979. Whilst their 1978 third album “Best Kept Secret” was successfully also released as self-titled album in UK and USA under Prodigal - Motown Records, the band welcomed Peter Roberts on co-lead vocals and then Mark Meyer (Sailor) replaced Tattersall on drums, Prodigal was shelved by Motown in 1979, disrupting the Stylus-Motown relationship. In August 1979, the band released their fourth album “Part of It All”, but USA release was not happened. Stylus disbanded later in 1979.
