Parber & Kerstein / Stories From The Heart
Denmark is said to be one of the cetre of good music and I rediscovered one of the hidden Danish treasure in 2001. The treasure was the Parber & Kerstein's early 1990's debut album "Stories From The Heart" produced by Morten Munch (ex."Skagerak"). This one was the only album of Parber & Kerstein. However, they were still active songwriters and were expected to release their brand-new album as the Parber Kerstein Band sometime early 2000’s, but don’t know whether they did. As a matter of fact, Parber & Kerstein released a CD-single "Once In A Lifetime" featuring Tommy Rasmussen (ex-Skagarak) on vocals, the anthem for the official ITU Triathlon World Championship 2001, taken place on the 4th- 5th August 2001 in Fewdericia Denmark. Parber & Kerstein shown how the Scandinavian good hard progressive Westcoast music should be! Target Records Germany reissued the album "Stories From The Heart" with the then brand-new single "Once In A Lifetime" as a bonus track. Release: 1991 Label: Pinapple Records,Denmark (CD9101) Tracks: 1. Intro 2. Keep On Waiting 3. You Could Be The Last 4. I'll Love You Forever 5. Talk Too Much 6. Love Don't Come Easy 7. Mark Winkler / Jazz Life
Mark Winkler started to reveal his songwriting ability in mid 70's. The first well-known tune was "Tropical Nights" performed by Liza Minnelli in 1977. On the other hand, Winkler made demo recordings in order to get an artist deal in those days. He signed a deal with First America Records, Seattle and completed his first solo album "Jazz Life" around 1980. And at last, "Jazz Life" was released by Music Is Medicine, the subsidiary label of First American. As the album title shows, Winkler performs pop jazz tunes throughout the album. And in 2001, Cool Sound reissued this album with an unreleased tune "Jazz Is Alive" originally recorded for this album in 1982. Past To Present - The 70’s
This is an album featuring quite valuable materials recorded by Graydon and Co. in 1970’s. All songs on the album are transferred from analog masters into a digital masterpiece of quality music for this release. The album is titled as "Past to Present - the 70s -" featuring Jay Graydon on vocals, guitars, bass and some synth stuff. It also features great singers such as Bill Champlin, Marc Jordan, Tata Vega, Lisa DalBello, Ed Whiting and more. On all tracks other musicians include such top names as David Foster, Jeff Porcaro, Mike Baird, David Hungate, Mike Porcaro, Greg Mathieson, to name a few. Apart from the 10 main songs, there are 10 more bonus tracks - fun stuff like TV themes, a jingle, and a few instrumental tracks of some of the first 10 songs. The first track is the demo version "If There's A Way" featuring Jay's lead vocal, later recorded by Waters on the group's second album "Waters" in 1977. Jay's melody line guitar part for this track is very impressive as same as Water's version. This must be one of typical good Graydon's tunes."What Good Is Love" early demo version sung by Bill Champlin himself follows and as you know this song was re-recorded by Bill for his acclaimed solo album "Single". Next is "You Can Count On Me" with solid melody, sweet chord changes and Jay's sweet vocal. It is not well-known that this beautiful song was recorded by Cory Wells only for 45rpm single. The fourth track "You're My Day" is also recorded by Cory Wells which appeared on his 1st solo album "Touch Me" in 1978. Lisa Dal Bello takes lead instead on this demo version, more disco song of the era. Early demo versions of the legendary Airplay are also included; "Should We Carry On" and "She Waits For Me". Marc Jordan vocal demo version "Secret Lovers",written for Japanese female singer Mariya Takeuchi, is worth listening. "Throw A Little Bit Of Love" demo with Ed Whiting were recorded by many artists later such as Cory Wells and Stevie Woods. "I Fall In Love Every Day" demo with Tata Vega on this CD is also known for Jaye P. Morgan version. Among 10 bonus tracks, "It's Right To Be In Love" should be remarked. This unreleased song is really great with Bill Champlin. "It's Right To Be In Love" instrumental version is added as another bonus track only for Japan. Release: 2 March,2006 (USA) / 23 August, 2006 (Japan) Label: Sonic Thrust Records, USA (STRCD-008) / Nexus - King Records, Japan (KICP 1176) Tracks: 1. If There's A Way 2. What Good Is Love 3. Radioactive / Ceremony Of Innocence
Radioactive, the Swedish guitarist Tommy Denander's main project for the last 10 years became in shape with the album release "Ceremony of Innocence" in March, 2001. European leading melodic rock label, MTM released one of the long awaited melodic rock albums, "On My Own" featuring Fergie Frederiksen from Toto on lead vocal was released on the new MTM compilation Volume 5 CD in advance of the album release, which was a PREVIEW one and the final version has real drums plus David Hungate (Toto) on bass. And another TOTO vocalist, Bobby Kimball is also on lead vocals for "Crime Of Passion" and "When You're In Love" written by him with Tommy. Fee Waybill, Jason Scheff and an amazing set of guest musicians are participating in this project. Don't miss the amazing RADIOACTIVE album. Japanese version includes a bonus track "Remember My Conscious". One more thing I would like to say here..... I dare to point out that there is one error on Japanese version liner-notes caused by the writer's lack of knowledge. On the liner notes, the writer says " 'Haunt Me Tonight' is the ballads penned by Richard Marx, Bruce Gaitsch and Fee Waybill, which seems to be an unreleased tune for Fee Waybill's solo album 'Don't Be Scared By These Hands'. " This is clearly wrong! This beautiful ballads is recorded by Bruce Gaitsch featuring Richard Marx on the lead vocal for Bruce's first solo album "A Lyle In A Windstorm" (1995). Moreover, probably the basic track of Radioactive is the common one. Tommy added his electric guitars and solo and Geir Ronning sings instead of Richard Marx lead vocals. Release: 11 July 30, 2001 (Germany), 25 July, 2001 (Japan) Label: MTM, Germany / Marquee/Avalon Records, Japan (MICP-10244) Tracks: 1. The Story Of Love 2. Crimes Of Passion 3. On My Own 4. Grace 5. Grand Illusion / The Book Of How To Make It
Probably, you would remember two AOR Heaven releasing album of Promotion's; "Not for sale" and "Yeah yeah", gained great reviews in AOR-press all over the world. In May 2000, Escape Music signed the band. The first thing the label demanded that the band should get rid of "that stupid name", personally I did not think the name "Promotion" so stupid, rather very unique band name! Thus the boys finally settled for "Grand Illusion". The band explained that a slight change of direction, more emphasis on guitars, (heavy guitars) had done, but the Grand Illusion trademarks, the outstanding vocal work from Peter Sundell and Per Svensson and Anders Rydholm's classy melodies are intact from the Promotion years. Together with Ola Karlsson's witty lyrics and some groovy drumming by Christian Sundell the Grand Illusion sound was created. I agree that Grand Illusion succeded to keep their excellent melodies and outstanding vocal works. However, from my point of view, it is so regrettable that we cannot listen to the great horns on the album, which absolutely made this band very different from other melodic rock bands. Release: Release Date: April 7, 20001 (Europe), March 23, 2001 (Japan) Label: Escape Music, UK (ESM063), Avalon/Marquee, Japan (MICP-10235) Tracks: 1. Feeling Strangely Fine 2. Don't Wait To Know 3. Journey / Arrival
The Journey’s 11th studio album was released in Japan 3 months ahead of worldwide with a substituted song in October 2000. The album was the first full-length studio album with lead vocalist Steve Augeri (ex. Tall Stories) and with Deen Castronovo (ex. Bad English). It was a little surprise for me that this album included not only hard-edge Journey Rock tunes but also typical Journey ballads tunes. Arrival received mixed critical reviews, with some considering the album formulaic, while praising such elements as Neal Schon's guitar playing. The 2001 US edition was released with 2 alternate tracks "World Gone Wild" and "Nothin' Comes Close" and "I'm Not That Way" was dropped. The US CD edition features an edited version of "To Be Alive Again", the full version is only on the Japanese CD. And the artworks was also replaced with the black one ( see the second pohoto). Doobie Brothers / Sibling Rivalry
It was 1989 when Doobie Brothers reunited with the new studio recording album "Recycles". I remember we were so excited because Tom Johnston, the original lead vocalist / guitar player could be found as the member of reunited Doobies. To be honest, I am obliged to admit that "Recycles" and following album "Brotherhood" (1991) surely reminded us of the good-old early 1970's Doobie years, but nothing more than that. In 1996, we could confirm that Doobie Brothers were still alive by their live double CDs "Rockin' Down The Highway" featuring Michael McDonald too. And I n 2000, we met the refreshing Doobie Brothers with this studio recording album "Sibling Rivalry". All the songs on this album are never the nostalgic and imitated Doobie tunes. For example "Leave My Heartache Behind" written by Pat Simmons reminds a little of "Black Water" but totally different tunes. Keith Knunden adds the different Doobie atmosphere by his lead vocals on "On Every Corner" and "Gates Of Eden". John McFee lead vocals on "Angeles Of Madness" adds soulful and sophisticated mellow flavor to this album. Furthermore, the different kind of Westcoast feeling are brought to this album by our familiar Westcoast / AOR songwriters such as Michael Ruff , Bill Champlin and Tamara Champlin. Actually "45th Floor" written by Bill Champlin and Tom Johnston is very good Rock'n' Roll which reminds me a little "China Groove" by its guitar riff. Really recommendable new album of 2000! David Pomeranz / Born For You
David Pomeranz is well-known for his songwriting the number 1 hits "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" and "The Old Songs" recorded by Barry Manilow and/or "Fire Down Below" performed by BonJovi's Richie Sambora, which was featured in Steven Seagal's movie "Long Way Around" Seagal's 1997 Warner Bros. movie. At the same time David was highly acclaimed as a singer in early 1970's with his MCA albums "New Blues"(1971), and "Time To Fly" featuring jazz greats Chick Corea, Billy Cobham, Airto and Eddie Gomez. In the late 70's, David released another album, "It's In Every One Of Us". And "The Truth Of Us" (1981) was one of the popular AOR / Westcoast albums in those days here in Japan, mainly because his self-performance version of "The Old Song" was featured in the soundtracks of the trendy Japanese movie titled "Nantonaku Crystal". "Born For You", this album David recorded for MCA Universal Records Philippines, features 14 love songs including re-recordings of his classics: "The Old Songs" and "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again', as well as 8 new songs. The album "Born For You" was sold more than 280,000 copies in Philippine. Thus David Pomeranz restarted to release his beautiful music since 1999 in South East Asian region. Last but not least, as regards this album "Born For You", Singapore edition followed in 2000 with a bonus track "Singapore Girl". Now Japanese edition is also released with a bonus track "Tokyo Girl" which is the same tune with different lyrics as "Singapore Girl" with LP-style Paper Sleeve jacket. Buzz Feiten / Whirlies
It was the end of 1999 when I listened to one of the best guitarists, Buzz Feiten's earthy rock project "Whirlies" CD. I have received the CD through Thoughtscape Sounds, the best Westcoast/ AOR mail order retailer which was regrettably closed their business early 2000. I was very surprised very first time to listen to this album because I expected Buzzy more contemporary jazz oriented style or more sophisticated rock. However, Buzzy shown me bluesy side of his guitar. Buzzy Feiten explained the sound of Whirlies as "Greasy Pop". Even though it seems difficult to get the original Indies release in the states, we had Japanese edition with a bonus track. Adrian Gurvitz / Classic
Adrian Gurvitz's brightest music career was started when he joined the hard rock band "The Gun" and released the album "Gun" in 1968. Once Adrian Gurvitz disbanded the trio Gun, he started a new heavy rock project "Three Man Army" with his brother Paul and former Spooky Tooth drummer Mike Kellie, and released their debut album "Third Of Life Time" in 1971. "Threee Man Army", "Mahesha" and "Three Man Army II" followed. Adrian then embarked on another venture - "Baker Gurvitz Army", featuring legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker. The band recorded 3 albums, "Baker Gurvitz Army" (1974), "Elysian Encounter" (1975) and "Hearts Of Fire" (1976). In 1979, Adrian started solo career with the album for Jet Records, "Sweet Vendetta", followed by "Il Assassino" in 1980. These albums featured Adrian's softer side, with the slickly produced mellow soul sounds by getting full support of L.A. top studio session musicians such as David Paich and Jeff Porcaro. And in 1982 Adrian released this album "Classic". Release: 1982 Label: RAK Records, UK (SRAK 547) Tracks: 1. No Fears In The Night 2. Living Ain't Easy Without You 3. Hello New York 4. Your Dream 5.
