Chris Eaton / Cruisin’, Chris Eaton / What Kind Of Love
Chris Eaton must be one of the key singer-songwriters of Contemporary Christian Music. The first album “Vision” is definitely the best mid 1980’s AOR / CCM album created with many Los Angeles session musicians, many of us expected to have Eaton’s album within several years then. The reality was different, 8 years elapsed by the time his 2nd album "Wonderful World" released in 1995, which was more relaxing one. This is Eaton’s third solo album in gentle atmosphere again, but is full of good melodies. In late fall of 1997, this album was released in UK first in the world as the album titled "Cruisin'" under Alliance Music UK. Then, USA edition followed in April, 1998, with the different title "What Kind Of Love" and different artworks. Kevin McCourt / Color Of The Truth
Who is Kevin McCourt? This was my first reaction to hear his name from my friend. To be honest, I have not been aware that he made many composition with Bill Meyers on his 2nd solo album "The Color Of The Truth". After listening to this Kevin McCourt's solo album released in 1997, I felt that I should give my old web ACMJ visitors full information in respect of the album. Kevin's melodies are the real Westcoast music and his vocal is awesome! After more than two decades passed, I say I can give you full guarantee of its quality. This album is one of the best albums in late 1990's. In 2004, I wrote his biography on my blog when he released three CDs - The Words & Music Series: Short Stories With A Soundtrack so I hereby quote as below; Kevin McCourt started playing music when he was 4 years old, and has been involved in the business ever since. Kevin studied music at North Texas State Univ. and moved to L.A. in the end of 80's era. He did studio session works or touring with many big artists including Taylor Dayne and Stevie Wonder. Kevin had done film promotional work includes campaigns for "Pearl Harbor", "Oceans 11" and "Finding Nemo" in recent years, but we have been waiting for very very long period until we have the next Kevin McCourt album. Release: 1997 Label : MPWest, USA (MPW5235) Tracks: 1. Burning Alive 2. Color Of The Truth 3. Take The Time 4. Waiting Here For You 5. Only A Thought Away 6. Mark Craney & Friends / Something With A Pulse
Mark Carney or Mark Craney? The former is the Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 until 2013 and the Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. The later is the ex Jethro Tull drummer. Without saying, whom I am taking about here is the later. The late Mark Craney was well-known recording and touring rock and jazz drummer., who worked with many artists such as Tower Of Power, Gino Vannelli, Jeff Beck, the late Tommy Bolin, Jean-Luc Ponty. Though his resume was impressive, Craney's greatest success must be drumming for the Gino Vanelli’s "I Just Want To Stop". His kidneys failed in 1986 and therefore he received a kidney transplant in March 1988. Mark rehabilitated himself and began playing the drums again in 1989. From 1993 to October of 1996, Mark traveled around the world with the Eric Burdon Band in spite that his transplanted kidney failed. He was obliged to leave the road because of exhaustion. He awaited a double kidney and pancreas transplant. This compilation CD was compiled and released for the purpose of assisting in Mark's recovery by his friends in 1997. One of the performers, Mark's Brothers should have been remarked. Bill Champlin played Hammond Organ and furthermore he took lead vocal on the track " They Don't Make 'em Like They Used To" written by Bill Champlin and Andreas Carlson. On 26 November, 2005 Mark Craney died of complications from diabetes and pneumonia in Sherman Oaks, California, at the age of 53. RIP.... Release: 1997 Label : Laughing Gull Records, USA (LG002) Tracks: 1. Jethro Tull - Black Sunday (live) 2. Eric Burdon - I'm Your Man 3. Tower Of Power - What Is Hip? (live) 4. Dwayne Ford / Another Way To Fly
Dwayne Ford is one of talented Canadian AOR artists who released the album "Needless Freaking" in 1982 fully supported by David Foster and members of Toto; Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, and Steve Lukather. The album is now said to be one of the classic AOR albums. Let’s look back his earlier days a bit. Dwayne Ford raised in Edmonton and moved to Toronto in late 1960’s and started his professional career there with Ronnie Hawkins, then he formed Atkinson Danko and Ford, with Jim Atkinson and Terry Danko, The trio recorded self-titled album as “Atkinson Danko And Ford With Brockie And Hilton” in 1972 on Columbia Records, which was re-released as Bearfoot's debut in 1973. A follow-up album “Friend With Bearfoot” came later in that year, but already disbanded when it was released. The third Bearfoot album in 1975, “Passing Time”, was distributed by Columbia as 'Dwayne Ford & Bearfoot,' despite that it was substantially Ford’s solo album recorded with session musicians. After releasing “Needless Freaking” in 1982, Dwayne continued working as a producer and songwriter in Southern California rather than performer. And he decided the independent route was the way to go, and finished his sophomore solo album, Another Way To Fly in 1996. The style of his music is different but some should remind you of good old 80's sound of his. Release: 1997 Label: Dwayne Ford Publishing, USA/Canada (DFCD-9701) Tracks: 1. Ten Years On The Inside 2. Tim Heintz / Lost And Found
Tim Heintz is one of the best Los Angeles based composers, arrangers and keyboard players writing beautiful melodies. Even if you should not be interested in AOR / Westcoast / Smooth Jazz, probably you probably experienced Heintz music and felt happy somewhere. Heintz composed and arranged many for Disney Parks, Sea World and Universal Studios. Some of his compositions reminds me of David Foster's good-old ones. After touring the world with artists including Michael McDonald, Chaka Khan, Boz Scaggs and Don Henley, he turned his focus to studio work, arranging and writing for a wide variety of projects, and as a keyboard player, you will find him on the albums of acclaimed artists such as Dionne Farris, Wendy Moten, Vesta Williams and Natelie Cole. Turning my eyes to his solo works, his albums topped the Billboard Jazz charts in the late 1980s. Heintz released three contemporary Jazz albums on TBA Records USA; “Quiet Time” in 1987, “Searching The Heart” in 1988 and self-titled album in 1989. In early 1990’s Heintz released two solo albums only for Japan on Warp / Alfa Records, Inc, Japan; “Angel Coast” in 1990 and “ Summer Rain” in 1992. This CD “Lost And Found” is the collection album, selected from his five solo albums; first solo "Quiet Time" (1987) - fifth solo "Summer Rain" (1992). In addition to instrumental compositions, several vocal tunes are featured. Release: November, 1997 Label: Fifty-Seven Varieties Music, USA (57VM-01) Tracks: 1. In My Heart 2. Dear Jacqui 3. Paul Bliss / The Edge Of Coincidence
Birmingham-England born Paul Bliss released nice UK AOR albums with Bliss Band; “Dinner with Raoul” (1978) recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, the guitarist for Doobie Brothers, and Neon Smiles (1979) on CBS Records. One of the Bliss Band song “How Do I Survive” was covered by Amy Holland, the current spouse of Michael McDonald in 1980 on her debut album and the first single from the album, peaking at number 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Thus Bliss became recognised as a songwriter and provided a song “Take My Time” for Sheena Easton debut album in 1981, then co-wrote a hit song “Heart Attack” with Steve Kipner, for Olivia Newton John reaching number 3 on Billboard chart in 1982. In 1983, Bliss wrote 3 songs solely and 2 songs with Steve Kipner for Hollies album “ What Goes Around...”. For Al Jarreau, Bliss wrote “Muphy's Law” on the 1984 album “High Crime” it might be interesting to know that Bliss also wrote a song for Janet Jackson; that was “Communication” on her second album “Dream Street” released in 1984. The impressive opening track of Celine Dion’s 1990 English language international debut album “Unison”; "(If There Was) Any Other Way" was his composition. Bliss also co-wrote the following second track "If Love Is Out the Question". Bliss was however, primarily known for being backup musician for the British Bands, "The Hollies" and "The Moody Blues" from 1989 to 2009. According to the liner notes with the CD written by. Bliss, "The Edge Of Coincidence" is a collection of demo recordings since 1983. The initial intention was to re-record them all, but apart from being a monumental task time-wise he concluded that many of the original recordings had an atmosphere he did not want to lose. Thus, Bliss’ version of "Castled On Quicksand" is included, which was performed by Think Out Loud, Peter Beckett and Steve Kipner's duo unit on 1997 “Shelf Life” album. “Heartache To Heartache” was recorded by Amii Stewart in 1988. The album also features self-remake versions of three Bliss Band songs; “How Do I Survive”, “Chicago” and “Rio”. “Telepathy” was originally performed by Al Jarreau on 1986 “L Is For Lover’ album. The CD is closed by “Innocent Eyes”, the title song of Graham Nash’s fourth solo album released in 1986. Promotion / Not For Sale
Promotion began as a 8 piece rock funk group 1984. In the beginning the name of the group was Mark 5. Four horns, drums, guitar, keyboards and bass. Peter was the lead singer and played the guitar. Anders played the bass, Håkan played alto saxophone and Jocke was the lead trumpet player. 1986 the band changed into a five piece rock band and took the name Promotion. Crille joined at the drums and Per at the keyboards. The band has since then had a lot of constellations, sometimes with horns and sometimes without. But its always been the same people who had come and go. 1995 was the year when Anders built his studio, this was the turning point for Promotion. Now they had the opportunity to record as much as they wanted. December 1997 was the first record , "Not for Sale" released on their own label. This Swedish band's sound style is like Toto's or Chicago's one. Good Melodies here and there. I reviewed when I wrote on the original ACMJ web, “If they will pay attention to the keyboard arrangement in general, they will be much better. In anyway, this album is worth being given to be promoted by using my website....” then. They improved and became the band Grand Illusion later. Air Supply / The Book Of Love
Air Supply had huge success in 1980 when they released their debut album “Lost In Love” on Arista, selling two million copies of the album led by the hit singles "Lost in Love," "All Out of Love," and "Every Woman in the World." However, their golden years did not last so long. After unsuccessful commercial sales of the 1986 album “Hearts in Motion”, the band broke up. Three years later, Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell, the two lead singers reunited and started to record new materials, thus the album “Earth Is...” was released, then did “ Vanishing Race” in 1993, “News From Nowhere” followed in 1995. However, those albums failed to make the charts in USA, whilst they were popular in Southeast Asian countries. Air Supply delivered their fourteenth studio album in the end of 1997. The album was a serious attempt for the band to penetrate the US charts, mainly focusing on mature adult contemporary songs and actually the album featured plenty of good melodies I thought then. Though the album didn't have any chart entries, the singles "So Much Love" and "When I Say" have gained critical acclaim in USA, although in Asia the single "Strong Strong Wind" was a big hit. Release: 9 December, 1997 (Japan: 17 December, 1997) Label: Giant Records, USA (9 24695-2) / Arista Records, Japan (BVCG-704) Tracks: 1. The Book Of Love 2. Strong, Strong Wind* 3. So Much Love 4. Dakota / The Last Standing Man
Bill Kelly and Jerry Hludzik was successful in early 1970’s when they released a single “Timothy" written by Rupert Holmes, which peaked number 17 on Billboard Top 100 chart in 1971. In 1978, they teamed up as the Jerry-Kelly band and released an album with Epic Records. The band changed the name as Dakota and released the first self-titled Dakota album with the track “If It Takes All Night” peaking at number 78 on the Billboard Charts in 1980. In 1984.the second album "Runaway" was released on the MCA/Full Moon label, engineered by Humberto Gatica, and produced by Danny Seraphine. The band stopped performing in 1987, but the 3 remaining members (Kelly, Hludzik and Rick Mankiller) created a local release, "The Lost Tracks". Whilst Bill Kelly moved to Nashville and separate, Huldzik and Manwiller embarked on getting back on the scene from across Europe and eventually singed a deal with Escape Music to re-release "The Lost Tracks" album slightly modified as "Mr.Lucky" in 1994. The success of “Mr. Lucky” in Europe and Japan led to the members to restart writing together again, and put together yet another album of the band. "The Last Standing Man" was the real brand-new studio album of the band. Release : 1 December, 1997 Label: Escape Music, UK (ESM023) Tracks: 1. Hot Nights 2. Somebody's Hero 3. Broken Voices
As at December 1997, my understanding about Broken Voices album was newly released in that year very first time. However, it was totally wrong. It seemed to be 1989 when Graham Goble, a founding member of Australian rock group Little River Band started the project with Stephen Housden, lead guitarist of LRB since 1981 and Susie Ahern, a female session vocalist touring / recording with artists such as Kylie Minogue, Renee Geyer and John Farnham. The Broken Voice also did live shows from December 1989 to August 1990. The touring support members were Annette Roche, Phil Henderson, Travis Clarke who participated in the album recording too, and James Roche. According to LRB live shows record, Goble’s last show with LRB was on 21 April, 1989 at Brisbane Hilton International Hotel, whilst Goble stayed with LRB by 1992 and the LRB album “Get Lucky” was released in February. It could be said that Goble started his solo career by this Broken Voices project in 1989. The 1991 self-release promo CD of the project seemed to include only 8 tracks, that is to say, “Secret Affair” and “Wanted” were not on it. Various Artiists / Thoughtscape Sounds '97 Sampler CD 2
Thoughtscape Sounds was surely one of the unforgettable independent labels that contributed to AOR / Westcoast music culture in late 1990’s. The label released the second sampler CD compiling songs from their releases, some tracks were picked up from their then-upcoming releases. In addition, the sampler featured unreleased materials only for this sampler CD; Bill Champlin's "Bad News" and “ We Don't Talk Anymore” performed by King of Hearts. Cy Curnin (The Fixx)’s solo album. “Mayfly” was planned to be released sometime in 1998 then by Thiughtscape Sounds, thus the title track “ Mayfly” and “Day To Day” were on the sampler but the release was shelved until 2005 when the album was finally to be public by Rainman Records, USA. “Coffee At Midnight” and “ This Morning in Amsterdam” by Jeff Larson were taken from his 1997 album “Beggars” (on It Stinks! Records, USA). Release: 16 December, 1997 Label : Thoughtscape Sounds (TSS-0013) Tracks: 1. Land of Dreams 2. Mayfly 3. I Married an Angel 4. Coffee At Midnight 5. Celtic Warrior 6.
