1959年2月3日に夭逝した天才、バディ・ホリーの作品。名曲だらけでベスト盤のような本作品ですが、オリジナル・アルバムです。このレコのオリジナル「コーラル盤」はそれだけでレアですが、これはそのプロモ盤で、本当に珍しいと思います。
ビートルズがバディ・ホリーのバンド「クリケッツ」にちなんで命名されたこと、ビートルズのメンバーがバディ・ホリーの大ファンだったのはあまりにも有名です（実際、クオリーメン；ビートルズ；ジョン・レノンとしてバディ・ホリーのオリジナル "Words of Love" "Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues" "Peggy Sue" "That'll Be The Day"などを録音しています）。ブラインド・フェイスも"Well... All Right"を録音していますし、ホリーズに至ってはバンド名をバディ・ホリーから拝借しています。
一般的評価としてはチャック・ベリーやエルヴィス・プレスリー以下かもしれませんが、カントリーをロックに取り込んだこと、シャウトしない・しゃくりあげるよな独特な歌い方、・・・などなど、個性豊かな素晴らしいミュージシャンだと思います。亡くなったのが、キャリアのピークがまだまだ先と思われる時期であっただけに、本当に惜しいです。
ここでは、敢えてこのアルバムに入っていないこの曲を付けておきます。この時期のロックの歌詞はどれも " 3 little words" に毛が生えた程度、深みのない歌詞が多いですが、そうした時期にこんな味わいのある歌詞を書いていたバディ・ホリーは、やはり時代の先を走っていた人だったと思います。
